I thought some of you might be interested in this. It is a HUGE deal in the conservation arena. We are one of only a very few "hunting" organizations admitted to this body.

DALLAS – DSC has been formally admitted as a new member of the IUCN, the United Nations’ International Union for the Conservation of Nature. The admission follows a lengthy and rigorous application process, and positions DSC within one of the world’s most influential and respected conservation bodies.

The IUCN announced DSC’s membership on May 13.

“We are extremely pleased with the IUCN’s decision and proud to be an official member of this highly respected group,” said Ben Carter, DSC executive director. “DSC is dedicated to conservation, education and advocacy. As an IUCN member, we will be even more effective in our mission to conserve wildlife and wild places.”

The IUCN is the world’s oldest and largest global environmental organization, and is considered a leading international authority on both the environment and sustainable development. It is a neutral forum for governments, non-government organizations, scientists, businesses and local communities to find practical solutions to conservation and development challenges. The organization is currently engaged in thousands of field projects and activities around the world.

“DSC has a well-documented history of contributing to conservation and sustainable-use projects and programs, both here in the U.S. and also internationally,” added Carter. “We very much look forward to becoming actively involved with IUCN endeavors, and will fully support the IUCN’s mandate to conserve our planet’s biodiversity, and advocate for sustainable use of wildlife resources.”

If you are not familiar with IUCN, here is their website: www.iucn.org

Congratulations DSC. That's a significant achievement. Good to see IUCN embracing the principle of sustainable wildlife use. I see Swiss Hunting Association and National Federation of Hunters France are also admitted to the IUCN ranks. This is one arena where active organisations representing game hunters needs to be - promoting and including sound hunting within the conservation mission.

Now, since DSC is looking out for my interests I think I owe them my support. Next stop DSC website to apply for membership.

Had a look at their web site. Not one mention of "hunting" as a tool to accomplish anything they claim to be working on. Maybe I missed it, so if someone can point it out, will have a look. Hey, I am all for "saving the Planet" and making the World a better place environmentally, but as some have mentioned, how much trust does one put in a group like this? Just asking not bashing. Will wait for more data and actual accomplishments concerning hunters/hunting before making any more comments.

May not be on their website but the IUCN has made many statements on the importance of managed hunting to conservation programs.

I deserve little or none of the credit, the person who did the lion's share of the work is Richard Cheatham, who posts here as Ricardo. He is the one that spent well over 100 hours completing the application and then probably about as many hours drafting the perfect response to an objection. Additionally, there were others, who shall remain nameless, that played a large role in making this happen. I promise you DSC will not just bask in the glow of this great accomplishment but will be an active member and will work to protect our ability to enjoy our sport worldwide.

Ricardo deserves the "attaboy's", not me.

I'm still very skeptical and rightly so in my own opinion
I'd say, Let them prove it that they mean business

I hope I'm wrong. But I have a hard time wrapping my arms around any organization that is tied with the UN. All I remember is our senate and the NRA fighting against the small arms treaty. The last time I was there I had to walk by a rather large revolver with a twisted barrel in the front of their building. I understand wanting to be a part of the discussion on world wildlife management. Just be careful what you wish for.

IUCN, as far as I am aware, has zero to do with UN gun-contollers.

You'll be hard pressed to find someone who thinks less of the U.N. than I do, but they are what we have to deal with & is it not better for us to try & make a positive difference rather than not getting in the game?
I do not envy those who will actually deal with the turds at the U.N., but I salute them for their valor.

Pardon my ignorance - but what is the direct link between the UN and IUCN?

Bwana Cecil, good point. That makes good sense to me. If their going to be part of it, then we all need to pull together for them. I have no doubt DSC will be a positive influence. Thanks for making that point. Every once in awhile I need to be reminded of things.
