It was amusing until I read this part: "Of course you can also use them in a .458 Winchester caliber rifle. But they are made for the 45-70, and why carry a heavy .458 when the trim Marlin 45-70 is much lighter and faster at recharging the chamber than a bolt action!" After that the credibility of the whole topic was lost on me.

Was part of the deal for using them secrecy? Frank "I don't know what there is about buffalo that frightens me so.....He looks like he hates you personally. He looks like you owe him money." - Robert Ruark, Horn of the Hunter, 1953 NRA Life, SAF Life, CRPA Life, DRSS lite

A 405 grain .458 is not a good idea for elephant. Maybe OK for buffalo if you want to use a solid instead of a premium soft point. In my test of FMJ's and monometals, the 400 grain gave up 20% penetration to a 450 - 465 grain and they gave up 10% to a 500 grain. Andy

I recently bought a "few" 400 gr. Punch Bullets - I loaded 42 gr. H4198 (450 Marlin)- av. 1900 fps. Recoil not as bad as max loads of 300 gr. Noslers. 5 shot group -2"- @ 50 yd. I need to build a test tank like Rips so I can compare preformance to my 375 h&h - 300 gr. North Fork.
