WOW!
Vickie here, just took another call from mom and dad...

Well, the bad news is no lion. The good news is a leopard that Pierre stated was an opportunity that couldn't be passed up. The leopard was STANDING up feeding off of the bait meant for the lions. I was told that he completely fills the back of the truck. He is the size of a large female lion. My dad is in awe at the size of this beautiful cat, and Pierre also stated that it is the largest leopard that he has ever seen.

He has also taken a kongoni. They both are comfortable and thoroughly enjoying their time. With regards to the temperature question...the days are very hot, 85-90 fahrenheit and very dry. The nights are cooler, comfortable. The exact words of my mom: "My hand held battery powered fan is the best thing I brought."

Great news from camp! Matt and I will keep the updates coming.

Best of luck for continued success. I love your attitude toward retirement and "investment' of funds. We look forward to seeing you both again when you next visit your dad down here.

Hope you're wearing out that camera taking pictures.

Great to hear about the GIANT leopard killed.

May SIMBA soon be in Mike's sights.

Did the missing 450 #2 ammo reach Mike yet?

Matt: See if you can get some preliminary stats, if at all possible, on the leopard: length, weight, skull measurement, etc. That will do in light of no pics yet!

Regarding the stats on the leopard...nothing exact yet as they had just arrived back in camp with the trophy.

My dad estimated it was all of 200lbs. He said that he could not lift it. Also, it completely filled the back of the truck, from one side to the other. He told me at least three times that it was as big as a large female lion...enormous for a leopard.

With regards to his hunting lion, I believe that he will not be chasing simba now. I am fairly sure that it was either lion or leopard, and because of the sheer size of chui, he opted to take him.

Matt and I both will get some more detailed information when we hear from them again, most likely at the end of the week.

Hi all,

Matt here. I talked to my mom and dad yesterday. The biggest news is that they made arrangements and the lion hunting has resumed! They haven't had any lions come in at any of the baits yet, but they are just now getting ripe enough for the smell to really carry.

To reiterate what Vick said, my dad said that the leopard was on its hind legs feeding on the lion bait, that was a minimum of 7-8 feet off the ground. I believe that he said it was about 9 feet from nose to the tip of its tail. No skull measurements yet though.

No more animals yet.

Message from Mike and Cherie...

They are on US soil. No simba, but several other remarkable trophies to share. They said if they feel up to it, they will post pics tonight. IF?? My dad will be logging on to AR as soon as they get into the house! They had a wonderful time, of course, and can't wait to share all their highlights.

Friends, just some quick notes... Simba eluded me... hunted very hard and long time riding checking baits in 500sq. miles... Did catch up to 3 lions near a bait lioness and 2 males shot was to far and did not want to risk a wounded lion confrontation... I shot a hippo with Boomer up close lights out did not move... , one scrub buff for bait, Nyassa wildebeast, East African kudu and 8 foot leopard, and a kongoni...
Last four days of the safari started having some pain in my mouth at the base of the nose was taking motrin to ease the pain and helped but the pain never eased but was bearable...
Finally had to cut food into small pieces to eat and not chew with front teeth...
Ended up with an abcess.. swelling my face from upper lip to massive swelling up to left eye... The flight from Dar to Amsterdam was a nightmare pain and pressure... How bad was it I placed a call to Global Rescue my plan covered catastrophic injuries... Made final flight to JFK and breezed thru customs...
But will get pics up when I feel better..

Mike & Cherie

Mike,
First, I hope your well and all will be O.K. Congratualtions on the great leopard. He sounds like a monster. Sorry to hear the lion evaded your attempts. On budgets like ours, it is tough to take, but overall, it sounds like you and Cherie had a wonderfull time with Pierre.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.
