larryshoresIn 96, we can up to a dried pan on the Moyowasi. We could hear an awful commotion. Apparently, a lion had chased a buffalo out onto the pan. The broke through the crust and could not move. He was being eaten alive by the lion.
I will see if I can find a picture and post it.

Michael RobinsonGreat photos, Bwanamich.
It looks as though that buff just gave up. Probably because he was stuck in the mud.
But I have seen them give up in other cases, even when seemingly free to continue the fight. (I have never seen this in person - but always on film).
I find it interesting that they will sometimes do that, notwithstanding their immense strength and will to live.

BwannaThanks. That does look mighty painful. Heck of a bull and so is the one to the right in the other photo.

bwanamrmUhhh does that lion know that bulls horns haven't started to drop yet and the points still extend above the boss? Though mature he is not ready to take yet and still a breeder! Bad lion, bad....

Actually a great action sequence of photos!

BwanamichYou know, lions often "pull down" a buffalo from the backside by gripping the animal just above the tail. It happens with such regularity that I am sure it is not coincidence.
I suspect that as they "chew" their way to the backbone, some sort of partial paralysis occurs which allows the lion (Often a second one) to go for the wind pipe with little opposition from the buffalo. I may be wrong though......

This happens with cattle too when they have been subjected to some kind of trama like being stuck in a fence or in the mud. After you free them they will just lay there and die unless you get them up and walking.
BTW here is another Ngorongoro bull
