My taxidermist needs a bongo cape to replace the bug eaten cape on a clients bongo (long story). His usual sources for capes and skins have been a dead end.

I promised him I'd post a request for info here. Any suggestions?

Yikes...that's going to cost a bit. What a pity to lose a bongo skin of all things.

I don't know the whole story on what happened to the original cape, only that the mounted head was lost in shipment by Air France for FIVE YEARS! Now it does not have one folicle of hair left on it. It looks like something out of a zombie horror movie.

Ask the french taxidermist Michel Vaillier
Michel Vaillier taxidermie
He is processing more than one bongo per year and visit Cameroon every year. He should have one or he can ask his connections.
good luck

Gahunter

I called Michel Vaillier.
Yet he has no bongo's cape. He's just back from Africa, the bongo's season will be in full in June.
He'll ask outfitters and contacts. Outfitters can provide capes from hunters who want only the massacre (bone). Contacts are another story : if by the grapevine a decent premium is offered for a bongo's cape, count on the locals to have a cape shown up. How the bongo died is anybody's guess.
good luck

Where was it stored to have been so bug eaten? I have a bunch of trophies in storage in northern MN and I check them twice per year. So far, they look great. I do have them wrapped in bubble wrap, however.

I actually don't know the details of how it ended up in the condition it's in. Surfice it to say it looks like something out of a horror movie.

I'm not the end user of the skin. I just promised my taxidermist that I would post a request on this forum. So far, we have one very promising lead for a full skin at around four grand. As of last week, the client had not said "yea" or "nay."

I personally don't think he is going to find one any cheaper.

I would also be surprised if he got a full skin for less than $4,000 and if he could find a cape, $2,500. You very seldom see them for sale.
