In the last MS thread I brought up some of the striking similarities between MS and Ivan. I find it rather ridiculous that most people openly condemn MS for ANYTHING he does, but yet think EVERYTHING Ivan Carter does is just wonderful. I really don't get it??? Did anyone else see him jump up on top of a freaking elephant with a client and then have said client shoot an insurance shot between their feet????? Eeker If that isn't over the top risk taking and showmanship I don't know what is? As others have said elephant hunting is about getting in close seeing the animals and leaving. Not screwing with them every chance you get. Just a thought. After making the comments about MS and Ivan being similar I got several PMs from people very well thought of around here that totally agree. Unfortunately anything with the CB seal of approval seems to be above reproach these days. I'm not knocking Craig, but I really feel Ivan is reckless. Of course I'm as armchair of an elephant hunter as it get's so take my comments with a grain of salt.

Brett, In a previous lifetime long long ago, I made the exact same comparison about three jumbo's getting poleaxed in the making of Ivans film. I got roundly hammered.

good afternoon gentlemen ,
just back from africa - as usual at this time of the year evenings getting cooler , game starting to gather at waterpoints -

i must say i read through this thread and though i only come in way after all the excitement that i feel craig has done a lot for conservation , at the end of each and every segment we try hard to find an educational tip on an aspect of safari preparation , an aspect of conservation or an aspect of biology , anything that promotes knowing more about the animals , area and conservation of what you are hunting i feel is good for conservation -

brett - i appreciate your openness and i understand your opinion , yes i must say that was crazy to get on that elephants head - the last two elephants before that with that same client he had shot in the back of the head and the angle cracked a tusk , he had seen that move somewhere and asked if he could do it , i said yes only if you have correctly brainshot the bull (knowing that it would be dead ) he did brainshoot it and so i let him do what he wanted to do - would i do it now - heck no - but yes i did it ! as far as being compared to sullivan , thats okay with me , everyone has their own right to an opinion , of course i think i hunt differently but thats just me Wink

lane , yes there is a list of who killed what as far as self defense - i have killed quite a few animals that were very close and would be considered self defense however they were the animals that we were intending to kill.

As far as animals that we were not intending to kill that i had to kill in self defense , i have killed five , in 22 years of PHing - predominantly elephant - i am not sure about others but thats my number.

all this being said gentlemen, i know craig pretty well , he is a great guy to be around , a great wealth of knowledge in himself , his books, articles and dvds make great reading and watching , and i am proud to be associated with him -

Fair question Fairgame
It's the body of work as a whole over the years. It started with the comments about Craig being an ambassador to the "safari business' and the post from Lane as " rubbish" That hit me wrong on every level, and that was it. Then this thread, and my goat got got ! Yes Lane this is America, yes you have every right to your opinion, and I guess I had better realize that you really have an axe to grind that I may never really understand. I am not going to waste my time to list our, including Craig's contributions to the safari game. It really is a waste of effort. I have had my say, expressed my feelings, and generally try to be civil. But as Lane says " lots of us work hard, are deeply invested in our companies, and get paid on our merits " Very true. But if guys were out there in your industry saying " He's a sorry vet, fireman, PH, tree trimmer ..what ever it would get your goat too.. If you do work hard, honestly, and think you deliver a solid product you will be stung by the jibes, as I am. Thats where I hope to lay this down. I really do have more serious fish to fry. During a Derby Eland hunt in CAR in April I contracted a bad something . Three hospital visits, 24 separate blood work up's to date, the loss of 20 pounds and 2 severe attacks that have nearly wiped me out have taken much of the joy out of my life at the moment as well as scaring the wits out of my girlfriend and loved ones that see this think pecking me to pieces. White blood count through the roof as my body fights this thing, but no other medicine until we know what it is that is trying to kill me. All in an effort to bring home good TV. That also makes my goat mad. Thats it, I'm going off to feel sick.

How aweful. You might look for a doctor from central Africa that practices here in the states. Perhaps someone who grew up with these diseases might be better able to identify it. I hope they figure it out and get you feeling better soon!

You do hunt with a differently style, but it seems sometimes needlessly confrontational and up close and personal. In action it reminds me of Mark Sullivan in some ways. Luckily you leave out the "choose how they want to dies" and "this is how it happens in the bush" ect. I'm not condemning it because I hardly feel I have the authority or experience on that one, but like I said earlier I find it funny that MS is pissed on and you're revered for it. Right or wrong I don't know. That just seems to be how it is. I don't mean to pick on you or rain on parades. I'm just being frank. I liked Boddington on Elephant. Your insight on elephants was helpful and I like the TAA shows you appear in. Thanks.

Thanks guys
I am seeing one of the South's top infectious disease specialists. He hails from Ethiopia and has practiced over much of Africa with lots of experience in tropical disease. I might as well went to Pep Boys for all the good it has done. Dracula has not taken as much blood as these guys have and it keeps coming back negative. Have just now started the regular habit of projectile vomiting-anytime, anywhere with no warning. Throw in my 5 day old upper chest cough and it just gets more and more fun by the day.
Have had full chest x rays, sonograms on liver and kidneys, all neg. During the attacks, I sweat through the bed, but run no fever. Freeze one minute, burn up the next. It's really getting me down, and the worst part is not knowing what it is. Thanks for the kind words guys.

Dave,

I think if you read back on some of mine and Lane's earlier posts you will find that we use the word 'rubbish' to greet each other and is often a reference to our disapproval.

As mentioned these threads can be monotonous and an injection of humor can be stimulating.

Lane does have an strong opinion and I would not go so far to say he is opinionated but he is not afraid to speak his mind which I do admire.

If I were to draw a conclusion then it would be there are two sorts of hunters here on AR - traditionalists and the more modern types whose goals and achievements are more important than the physical and pure act of hunting. When you have a contrast like this then there is bound to be some friction and this often produces lively debate.

Note when I first joined AR and spouted my opinions and beliefs I was shot down in flames (Lane being the front gunner), as I had wrongly presumed my opinions were cast in stone. However I did not wain and my opinions are still very much my own and I will still defend them.

We are all individuals here and each his own man, we share common bonds dictated by the gun. A potentially volatile concoction. That's all.

not to hijavck the thread and make this ivan vs MS - thanks for your frankness brett i wish more people were that "straight up" , i think the main difference i see is that the animals i approach closely are not wounded and suffering unnecessarily -and also that i try and let the client do the most shooting ! yes i do get close - closer than a lot of people - lots of other threads including Boddington on elephant where i explain that - and the reasoning behind it.

this year i have guided on 9 bulls so far - 7 of those we took side brainshots and the bulls had no idea we were there - to be completely honest , i am tired of failed frontal brainshots that result in a majestic animal running off in a hail of gunfire- they simply dont deserve that - i have only had to back up shoot on one bull - i put in a hipshot which anchored him and then my client finished him - thanks for your input brett

I don't think that is a fair statement at all. The differnce is that the traditionalist don't just walk right up to them and agitate them. They get the wind right, use the terrain, ease-up...if not what they want...back out UN-noticed most of the time.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. And thanks to all for the worry on the mystery bug I have. The Bilharizia test is still out, and that is my bet, but for some damn reason its taking a ridiculous length of time to come back. damn frustrating I promise. I had every maleria test out there , but they came after the attacks, not during the peak of the attack. Would it not show up 4 days later ? Any thoughts would be welcome as I am nearing the end of my mental rope on this thing.

Dave,

My Danish PH in the Luangwa suffered along illness and was twice treated for malaria even though the results were negative. When he went into intensive care in Europe he was diagnosed with two different strains one being a dormant and vicious strain. His symptoms very very similar to yours he was aggressive, rude and downright objectionable.

Joking aside he felt hungover, exhausted and suffered from headaches and back pain. The fevers occurred when the malaria came out of hiding.

Thing is I have no sympathy for him if he is going to prance around the camp in a little pair of shorts and a cut off t-shirt.

It is scary thinking that I can be getting negative results but still positive for malaria.
The exhausted feeling is always there , but no back pains and only a couple of bad headaches. Chills like crazy, then burning up an hour later. But no fever, I mean none. I have developed a vicious week long cough, and sudden, and I mean instant vomit attacks that come on with no warning at all. Are they a part of this, or just a good old American strain of something. Worry's the hell out of me trying to figure it out.

Chills and burning is what we call fever.

Not sure about the cough and probably secondary infection?

Sounds like Malaria or tick fever but you need to speak to a Doctor in Africa.

I managed to avoid malaria for 30 years but got my first bout of it in Uganda recently and it made me feel sicker than I've ever felt in my life..... and I reckon I got away lightly because I was able to take coartem very early on.

Still knocked me for a six though and Dave, you REALLY have my sympathy! Eeker

Fairgame,
You live in the midst of the most vicious malaria in the world...southern Zambia. If I were Dave...I would be taking malaria meds even if negative until someone proved 100% otherwise. IE: malaria until proven otherwise.

Agreed. we take a synthetic drug called Artenum and another Arinate which puts you back on your feet within 6 hours. As a PH this is quite important. OK you cannot track up Buff but you can drive and talk shit.

Very interesting how this thread turned to mud slinging. It's always those select few individuals that know very little facts but draw very big conclusions.

I refuse to get in a war of words on any forum. For one I'm not a fast enough typer, and two, I prefer to see what people will say to my face because it is typically far less than they will say while hiding behind a computer screen.

That being said I've tried very hard to stay away from responding to this one, but Ivan, Craig and Dave have become very close friends of mine, and those who will condemn them truly don't know them. Before you throw stones at anyone, get the facts and apply some common sense.

I will tell you those three men try very hard to project hunting, conservation, and the total outdoors experience in a positive light. Yes, it is how they make a living and therefore they HAVE to promote their product which does promote self many times. It is no different than many other industries promoting their products and services.

I'm on here often for a variety of reasons which does include promoting my services as a taxidermist. No secret that thinking outside the box is often times the difference between being successful and not being successful.

Now that I've probably said way to much and taken way to much time from my busy day, I will walk away with my final thought... Approach any of these three men and get to know them just a little bit and you will likely have a change of heart about slinging mud their way. Are they perfect - no way- but neither is anyone else I've come across including myself....DAN

Sorry to interupt your busy day but who was mud slinging?

Wildlife Gallery,

Bloody well said! tu2

I've met Craig a few times (though I doubt he'd remember) and have communicated a fair bit with him and he's an absolute gentleman.

I've never met Dave or Ivan but again, have communicated a fair bit with both and have found both to be real gentlemen.

As for their DVDs, like I posted previously, the sponsorship is all part of the business and everything they offer is top notch... so what's wrong with that!

I find their DVDs excellent viewing and very informative and they surely beat the pants off of the 'let the animal decide' shite...... but at the end of the day, if someone doesn't like 'em, the easy answer is don't buy 'em......... but there's no need to insult the guys. Wink

You have been slinging mud since you sauntered onto the scene with your first posts about CB and dogs.

Fairgame is just debating the "facts" not mudslinging. Go back and look at the cats and dogs thread and you'll see he and I had a lively debate as well.

Getting back to the original question. I know what it will be but have been asked to keep it confidential. Wink

The good news is that I can be bought.

The bad news is that I can only be bought with next weeks guaranteed winning lottery numbers............. or perhaps with Nganga's left handed .500 double!
