I'm guessing this is an African viper, just from book picts, and could be Bitis caudalis, Cape Horned Adder. Just a guess. The Africans will be awake in a few more hours.

shakariIt's not easy to tell from the photo as it's not very clear and the head is facing away from the camera, but I think Steve is probably right. It looks like a horned adder (Bitis Caudalis) or a many horned adder (bitis Cornuta) to me.
Kayaker might possibly be able to give a definite identification.

DulcineaThe pic was from Namibia(Tsesib).
My wife took it while she was wandering around. When she got back she told us she saw a snake. When I saw the pic I told her it was probably not a good idea to poke it!
Thanks for the answers. I could have researched it myself but why waste all this knowledge!!!!

NzouI third that, Horned adder, (Bitis caudalis) which can be quite variable in colouration. I dont think it is one of the many-horned adders (B. cornuta sp.). A close-up of the head would sort the argument out for good.

dogcatIn my part of the world, this would be a "dead" snake. Or the "Mexican Hat Dance" snake - the description based of the dance we do while running away....

Lhook7As the others have said, it is a horned adder. Scroll down to "Day 6" on my hunting report for a close up picture of one.
