Forgive me if this has been posted before, but have you seen this leopard charge video before? The compressed video quailty is poor but the footage is hair raising to say the least!

larryshoresPeter Thormahlen is a real character. I have a video of an ostrich kicking him and almost severing his achilles tendon. I should post that just to embarass him. Leopard does touch him but the ostrich hammered him. One has to see the humor in that.

dakota45056Fulldraw,
Thanks for the heads-up on this. Believe it is new on AR.
The hunter Dave did a good job getting a couple of shots off on ground at the leopard. For me, iron sights would have been better at that range, but the scope didn't seem to bother him.
Very exciting hunt!!

Maybe it's just me, but it looked like the client missed high by about two feet the first shot. Fast is nice, but only if you hit what you're aiming at!

DB BillAmazing footage --- it looked like the leopard had been hit in the back as it was dragging his back legs which is probably what prevented a lot of bleeding--- I thought at first he was dragging a dog. WOW

I don't know if it is new to AR, but I sure haven't seen it before. I think that is the best Leopard charge footage I have ever seen.

Michael RobinsonVery interesting. Thanks for posting this.
That leopard's hind legs were disabled - they were completely out of action. He must have caught a round far back in the spine or through the hips.
Lucky for the hunters, since that slowed his charge to a crawl. Did you notice how close the leopard let them get before launching his charge?

Fulldraw Outdoor MediaI don't agree that the client missed two feet high. I think he hit the cat way back and high and what you are seeing is the bullet hitting the ground after passing through. One thing I noticed is that all of his shots were from the hip, so to say. It looks to me as if the PH took the first shot on the charge, but the client put him down.
I wish I could get my hands on an uncompressed version of this footage. I have some great software that would output a larger but much higher quality file that would really do this clip justice. If anyone here knows who shot it or the PH, tell them I would gladly improve this clip if they would send it to me.

retreeverNo matter how big the rifle you have to hit it to stop it...The client stayed there and kept on shooting...
I also have to admit a 450marlin would make a good crusher up close...

Until you short stroked it and it jammed.
I want a GOOD bolt gun or my .470 Nitro in that situation.

Yep, that's a new clip. Good thing they kept at it since dogs and guys could've been mauled badly. Luck on finding a better version where it's not so blurry, would be nice to see it clearly so I can view it full screen. Thanks for posting.

shootawayIt looks to me that the PH put it down when the cat came to a near stop at the feet of the client.I think all of the clients shots missed.

Absolutely! You couldn't have said it more appropriately. Looks if that Leopard set out to rob the Cape Buffalo claim to tenacity. The hunters were definitely lucky his hind legs were taken out of action prior to the charge.
I'd give it a 3 on the pucker-factor scale, had he gotten a claw in a 2 if you can smell his breath you get a 1 scary than that only comes with death. The client should get credit for stopping the charge at 3

CunninghamThe best line was when the PH says to the client "For an old timer you move like a Ballerina".

I don't agree with the miss either! I think the spout of dirt was the result of a pass-through, that disabled his hind quarters, with a shot through the spine in the flanks!
So much for the leopard not haveing a chance when hunted with dogs! That old guy CAN move, and he earned that cat!

I have hunted with Peter Thormahlen and can confirm that he is a "character". But one of the best kind.

I don't know where you get these video's but thank you for posting. That was exciting footage.
With all the point and shoot going on, would a shotgun been better?
The only easy day is yesterday!
Had he been hit before the charge?

I haven't seen this before. Magnificent cat. I agree with the hip shooting but I am wondering if someone off camera was not also involved. The shoting was very fast and I saw no bolt cycling. The cat was certainly dragging his hind quarters.
"that was a magnificient last stand".
Could not have said it better.
Peter.
Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright, that God may love thee. Speak the truth always, even if it leads to your death. Safeguard the helpless and do no wrong;
The legs were gone before the charge or you would have just seen a blur, and a client on his back trying to get shed of the leopard.

stuntpilot2Last time I saw that level of determination and malice clawing ahead solely by the fronts was the final scene of "The Terminator".
Even with the poor resolution, you can still see dust and the dragging rear as Chuy first exits the bush.
Video could easily have ended differently were that not the case.

larryshoresI know Peter. I have e mailed him to ask for the story and too see if he can send a better video.
11 May 2007, 19:50
larryshoresI got an e mail back from Peter. I am not computer savy enough to copy it.
First, Outdoor Visions is selling the video. He did not mention the name of it.
I will briefly summarize what Peter said.
They were both baiting and using dogs. They found the leopard with 3 days left in the hunt.
The dogs were on a leopard and they rushed to the area. As they got out of the truck, Peter checked both guns to make sure they were full. This was fortuitious. They could hear the leopard but could not see him due to the high grass.
The cat suddenly charged at Peter. Peter and the client both fired. The client missed, Peter hit near the rear spine. The cat changed directions and went for the client. Both shot more. Peter missed once and hit the paw with his other shot.
The client killed the cat right in front of him. There was one shot left in the two guns and there was a tree right behind the client. There was going to be big trouble if he missed.
Perhaps the DVD will reveal more.

BwanamichSo in fact the PH shot the leop and the client backed the PH up! Who paid the trophy fee
