Depending on distance, and whether or not he stops, that would be a hard lion to pass on.

He is a little too hairy for me. I like mine bald.

My first and last lion. I will take pictures for the rest of my life.

My PH with my follically challenged but very wild Burkina Faso lion. He is a male and weighted close to 400 pounds.

Tracked and bumped on the road.

I will post more picture - maybe the aging experts can age him.

I was surprised how heavy his head was and how muscular he was.

He tasted chewy when I ate him.

We were following buffalo tracks in Tanzania, and walking through a clear area.

To our right was a small hill, not very high, but stretches for several hundred yards.

The first 100 yards or so was covered in dry grass.

Our path took us about 5 yards or so from the edge of the grass.

Suddenly, all hell broke loose, and the grass became alive! And to add to the excitement, lions were growling!

We could see nothing, but the grass moving - something was moving away from us.

Some lions appeared above the grass, then more growling, and something moving very fast towards us!

We had our rifles ready, following the movement in the grass. But, we could not see anything to shoot!

We ran away from the grass, keeping an eye on the movement towards us, to give us more distance to shoot.

A few yards from the clearing, the movement stopped. Then started moving back away from us.

We waited to see. Then a big lioness appeared above the grass, to join her pride.

That was just one of some of the encounters we have had with lions.

Nothing quite like lions audibly voicing their displeasure at your presence. Happened to us in Tanzania last year while we were looking for a suitable tree to hang a leopard bait along a korongo. It get's your undivided attention.

IF he stops, or you stop him it'll be time to change your shorts. IF he don't, it won't matter a bit.
Since it was posted, should we assume he stopped?

Good picture whoever took it. Thanks for sharing.

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

Along the lines of Saeed's post, we were in Nyakasanga in early (May? First hunt if the season) walking along an elephant path to a pan to check for elephant tracks. We broke out of the really thick bush as we neared the pan and a mere six or seven yards to the side of the first tracker a combretum bush comes alive with motion and a couple of lion growl and roar. The trackers took flight, as did the game scout. The No 2 tracker tried to climb me like a tree as I was trying to bring my rifle to bear. Damn he was quick! And he actually ended up on my shoulder. At least four and maybe six lions burst out from under the bush, thankfully going away.

The lions were lying in ambush, waiting for lunch to walk past on the way to the pan. If one of the lions had decided to come rather than go, someone would have gotten hurt or killed, it was that quick and the lions were that fast. I didn't even have time to crap my shorts.

I was amazed on the trip in June at how little cover an adult Lion can hide in and absolutely not be seen.

Lion Data

Shoulder to leg - 115 cm/ 45.27 inch

Chest - 136 cm / 53.54 inch

In the grass there is a zero chance of seeing a lion 6 feet from you. the only time a lion is seen is when he wants to be seen.
