Hi, for pure entertainment value, which iconic hunting personalities do you associate with the various hunting cartridges/chamberings? I am thinking along the lines of well-known hunting personalities who were known to use, or are currently using these, through their careers, and are inextricably associated. For example, my list thus far; .270 Win. - Jack O'Connor 7x57mm - WDM "Karamojo" Bell .30-06 Spr. - Teddy Roosevelt, Ernest Hemingway? .416 Rigby - Harry Selby .375 H&H - Harry Manners .458 Win. Mag. - Ron Thomson?, Richard Harland .500 Jeffery - Fletcher Jamieson .505 Gibbs - Kevin "Doctari" Robertson, Richard Harland I wouldn't say this should be restricted to hunters and cartridges of old, e.g. who would you consider to be the icon of the .458 Lott? Add Herb Klien to the 300 Weatherby.
You could add Grancel Fitz to the 30-06. He was(IIRC) the first person to kill record book heads of all NA game, and he did it all with a G&H 30-06. Also, 7mm Magnum = Warren Page 8MM Magnum(or anything fast and flat) = Col. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt. Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. Since as I understand it he was personally involved as president in the adoption of the 03 Springfield and the 03 and 06 cartridges it is fair to associate him with it. I am not sure but I seem to recall that he shot an elephant with the 06. SSR | |||

50-70 as in the Allin Conversion of percussion musket to Trapdoor Springfield,in 1868, the first centerfire breechloader rifle of the U.S. Army. As in "Lucretia Borgia" the "Needle Gun" of William F. Cody, which was a direct descendant of the first metallic cartridge (rimfire .69-caliber  ) breechloader in the world."Needle Gun" referred only to the long and skinny shape of the centerfire Trapdoor Springfield rifle, not a pin-fire. Yes, we here in the USA beat the rest of the world to it, in 1858, Morse conversion, of the Springfield 1816 Musket, flintlock to rimfire!!! Then the Model 1865 Rifle, Allin Conversion of Springfield Model 1861 percussion musket to .58 Rimfire, First Model Allin. Then the Second Model Allin Conversion of 1866, using Springfield Model 1863 percussion muskets, to .50 cal. centerfire, 50-70 Govt, with new .50-cal barrels, instead of barrel liner, mass produced for USA from 1868 through 1872, until 45-70 Govt. of 1873.  .395 H&H: Rip An oddball for an oddball. | |||
