It is the time of year when we are getting ready for another safari.

All old hands and a new hunter to Africa.

Nisse is a friend from Sweden, he has been hunting all his life at home, and it is his first hunt in Tanzania.

Anders is supposed to teach him the ropes, but knowing Anders, I think Nisse is in for a lot of jokes!

Exactly how a safari is supposed to be.

Here are a few items which we have made at home, including our special tse tse fly attractant, belt ammo holders, bolt case and safari hats.

I used to use Uncle Mike’s ammo holders.

They never lasted long, because they were made for 30-06 size ammo, and putting 404 ammo stretches them quite a lot.

And I could never put 10 rounds in.

We have a fantastic leather man working here and I designed this and he made it.

The inside of each round holder is elastic, and leather on the outside.

Grips the round, and the leather stops it expanding too much.

Our safari hats used to be colored by my daughter.

She is away at university so my wife did them.

The tse tse lotion works better than anything we could find commercially.

Basically 50/50 DEET and sunscreen.

Yes.

I used to wrap the bolts in cloth.

And as we have a very good leather man here I asked him to make me a couple for my rifles.

He also made the ammo carriers.

Very nice leather goods, I especially like the bolt holder. I made one out of ostrich leather but it is nowhere near as nice as yours.
Hope all preparations go well and your group has a great hunt.

We had problems with MTM ammo cases.

Either too small or too big for our 375/404.

So we made our own on our 3D printer.

We used a laser printer to print the labels on them.

As you can see, the results are great.

Everyone has made it to Dubai.

Anders and Nisse arriving at 1:30 in the morning, and dragged to the desert at 5!

Hardly any sleep!

No matter, seems they are fully awake!

For all of us, I take 140 rounds.

We are 5 hunters.

We never use all the ammo.

We have a shooting contest for the camp staff at the end of the hunt, and everyone gets a prize.

Walter used to be the master of ceremonies, now he is no longer with us, Pete is in charge very ably supported by a whole bunch of eager helpers!

Best of luck to all! Is Maktoum going to be bow hunting buffalo again this year?

It’ll be fun to see some posts on how the new and improved version of Rene does. I imagine the guys were surprised when she climbed down getting around like she did 20 years ago.

First day out after sighting in our rifles.

Followed a single buffalo bull for ages in a very short place in circles.

Very difficult to see the tracks on hard ground and grass.

Gave up and left him.

Saw a kudu bull and went after him.

Eventually found he was too young.

Then got into some real thickets.

Where visibility was about 2 yards.

Got chased by elephants and decided to clear out!

Had lunch.

In the afternoon found an old buffalo bull and shot him.

Got back to camp at 7.

Both the Vikings and Maktoum were back too.

They chased all sorts of animals but were not able to shoot anything.
