m3taco - There has been some talk about price controls on homes in Windhoek, black ownership partners, and limiting foreign investment however, that is only a handful of MPs doing the talking and not a broad census. I have not heard of any investor being run out of the country so I cannot comment on that. Since working with both MET and Minister of Public Enterprises Jooste I have not seen any indication that assets can be seized without cause - especially foreign investment. Furthermore, if you propery structure your business, even if you could not reenter for some reason, your company still operates, cash still flows and money can still be transferred outside the country. So I do not see any potential situation where you forfeit your assets. Anyhow, EVERY investment has some degree of risk especially when you get too far outside of the US. The best you can do is understand the risk and appreciate the potential downside of making the investment. For me, Namibia was a no brainer and an easy risk to manage. Your mileage may vary... ___________________ Just Remember, We ALL Told You So.

Phillip I don't have any more info than anyone else.... but I do have opinion & my opinion is Madman Malems or one of his ilk (should he meet with a bad accident) will be President (probably for life!) within a few terms...... I hate to say that for the obvious reasons but nevertheless, that's what I think. Invest with 100% certainty huh? - That's what a lot of people thought before & even after Mad Bob Mugabe took over & look what happened later...... & exactly the same thing will happen when Madman Malema & the Economic Feck Ups take power. Even before that, the immigration act amendments of about 2010 meant a significant number of white visa holding immigrants (including me) had to sell up & leave because we couldn't get visa renewal or residency & to add insult to injury, every one of us despite not ever having been granted residency were then subjected to Reserve Bank restrictions of departing residents which on average cost us about 25% of our wealth..... So hardly 100% certainty with regard to security of foreign investment. As regards to what might be termed security of tenure....... The last conversation I had with a home affairs official was just before I left & his parting words to me were: "It's quite simple Mr Robinson. We don't want whites in South Africa & we certainly don't want white immigrants. Which is why we won't grant you a visa or residency" - This despite the facts I owned everything we had outright, paid our taxes, employed staff, contributed to the community, were responsible for clients spending a 7 figure sum in the country every year & whilst every floppy in Africa with no education or job prospects & arse hanging out of his trousers can walk through the park or across the river, stroll into the nearest home affairs office & get immediate permanent residency with no questions asked. As you asked for fecks...... I think it'll be a feckin' disaster for the country in general & the white population in particular when that bastard comes to power. I appreciate SA is a wonderful place but sadly it's wasted on the Afs & whilst I fully understand white Saffers love it & want to stay there & I don't blame them for that but I reckon it'd be nothing short of bloody bonkers for any foreigner to invest in a game farm or similar there. You also ask where else? Well I'd look towards Namibia, Zambia or possibly Botswana (but I do know white immigrants that have been kicked out of there also so would be extra cautious) as good/better/safer investment possibilities for Africa or maybe Italy, Spain or Portugal for Europe. - Personally, I'm happy as a pig in shit here in Portugal & although I miss SA & more importantly/accurately, my friends in SA who I miss terribly, I wouldn't move back there for all the tea in China....... I've been here for 5 years now & have hardly seen a floppy & NEVER a single one in uniform & a position of authority & that suits me just tickety boo!

Steve, as a British citizen you may have to flee again ... Brexit may not help that much to stay in UE ...

Mate, it's not impossible but it is (IMO) highly unlikely. The UK has voted for Brexit but even after it's left, Portugal will still be a member of the EU & EU law states that once someone has become domiciled in a member state, they cannot be made to leave...... & we've now been domiciled here for 5 years. Then there's the fact that any agreement later on would obviously have to be reciprocal & there's far more Portuguese in the UK than Brits in Portugal so if the Portuguese kicked us out the Portuguese in the UK would get similar treatment. There's also the fact that the longest existing treaty in the world is the Anglo Portuguese Treaty of about 1373 which would suggest such things wouldn't happen. All in all, I'm not worried about the situation at all.

And if push comes to shove, you are by now eligible to citizenship which would make no difference seeing sunny Portugal was the country of your choice in which to retire. Besides, you would probably have more freedom of travel with an EU passport than say, an RSA or UK one.

Gotta say I reckon we made a good choice coming here & the longer we are here, the more we like it. The only drawback is the language & pronunciation is an absolute bastard to learn but we're getting there slowly. Gender of some inanimate objects are especially confusing. One loaf of bread is a loaf of bread & two are two loaves of bread for example & one fish is one fish but two fishes suddenly become two female fish with the word two becoming feminine but not the word for that particular type of fish changing. How TF does that happen?

Someone with English as his mother language, you should not complain about how awkward other languages are

Saeed I agree that English is a very difficult language to learn but Portuguese takes it to a different level & the pronunciation when compared to the spelling of the word & also the difference in structure (compared to English) simply makes Portuguese a really tough language to learn. - Fortunately many Portuguese speak at least some English & pretty much all Portuguese understand how complicated their language is. But all that said, the old joke is very true. Q: What do you call someone who speaks 3 languages? A: Trilingual. Q: What do you call someone who speaks 2 languages? A: Bilingual. Q: What do you call someone who speaks 1 language? A: British.
