Very interesting article, thanks for posting it. Frank "I don't know what there is about buffalo that frightens me so.....He looks like he hates you personally. He looks like you owe him money." - Robert Ruark, Horn of the Hunter, 1953 NRA Life, SAF Life, CRPA Life, DRSS lite

I guess this only occurs when there is an extreme scarcity of mates of the respective species? Otherwise, why doesn't this occur everywhere sable and roan overlap? Which is a lot of places. Interesting article.

Interesting research. The giant sable as well as the various roan subspecies have caused great debate amongst governments, game breeders and hunters. This will add to the mix

Like you suggest,I think it could only happen in the absence of a herd bull and young males. I suspect in general healthy populations there are enough breeding males in the heard to keep the breeding exclusive to the species and to "protect" breeding from outsiders

A really interesting article. Africa is not moving forward in terms of stability, and wars and conflicts and habitat loss from other causes like primitive agricultural practices will continue to put pressure on a lot of species. Angola has been off most folks' beaten path for a long time and it is good to see that researchers have access to these populations. It makes you wonder how isolated an occurrence this is?
