i think a flat nose 550 gr 510 class solid impacting @ 2200 fps is the best ballance of effect and shootability...but hey, what do i know...what say you? 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. (Founder)

Anything in 416 up will do the job, the biggest concern is if the hunter is comfortable with the caliber and will he be able to handle the recoil without flinching. Rather shoot a rifle that you can handle, than a big caliber that make you flinch. A well placed shot with a 375 is better than a poorly placed shot with a 550. The biggest that you can drive to 2200fps or so and shoot well, at least up to .470 NE. That varies with the individual. A right answer for one person may be a wrong answer for another, and vice versa. We all know that there are very experienced folks here that use a .375, even some who are quite capable of using larger cartridges.

This poll is hard to answer. I am assuming by your question that when you say "Dangerous game" you are talking about elephant, buffalo, rhino and hippo? The calibers you suggest, with the possible exceptionof the 375 are better suited for those, but for the cats, I like something with a little more velocity, and that includes thee various 375s, 33s,etc., and for leopard, I like the 33s and the 30s, even the 06. jorge USN (ret) DRSS Verney-Carron 450NE Cogswell & Harrison 375 Fl NE Sabatti Big Five 375 FL Magnum NE DSC Life Member NRA Life Member

My .416 Rem worked perfect on my Buffalo. A 370 grain North Fork soft at 2450 fps put him down, he got up and walked slowly away and a 370 grain flat point solid through the shoulders put him down again, he got up then turned and went belly up for good. This was my experience for what it is worth. Good shooting. phurley

While the venerable .375 H&H has been my personal choice and used for both Buff and Leopard, I have selected the .458/.470 because of the need to be sure. IMHO, caliber kills! Member NRA, SCI- Life #358 28+ years now! DRSS, double owner-shooter since 1983, O/U .30-06 Browning Continental set.

.416 400gr at 2200-2300fps would be my choice, but it's all up to personal preference.........
