Royal Antelope Native to Namibia?

I didn't want to highjack the other Namibia animal thread so here goes.

In regards to sable, roan, sitatunga, and red lechwe: Where are they native to in Namibia if at all? Are there areas where they are on license in their native habitat?

I'm under the impression that the Caprivi has all of the above, but not all are on license. I'm fairly clueless about their natural distribution across the rest of Namibia and if they are hunted off game farms (in their natural habitat).

Thanks

Brett

When I was making calls to references about the outfitter I was researching in Namibia one of the hunters wanted a sable. The outfitters land is three strand cattle fenced as the critters are free range. The PH took the guy to another bordering high fenced concession to “hunt†his Sable. The guy told me he felt bad afterwards because the Sable just seem to stand there and look at him as if he was bringing him lunch when he shot him. Sounded a lot like put & take to me. The guy fully admitted the PH told him that Sable was not available in the area and they would need to travel to a farm to get one.

I don’t want any part of a put & take. Just not what I’m interested in and that’s why I started the other thread. Not trying to hijack yours but I thought you might want to know what I learned.

The one post about "reintroduced" game was something I didn't think about though.

That has no interest for me either. I think traveling to the different places where the animals are found and seeing the places and having the experiences is half the fun of hunting them. Even if it is more expensive and I don't end up taking every animal I would like to at least I'll be proud of what I have. That's why high fence put-take hunts have no interest to me. Besides who wants to travel half way around the world to hunt a farm when there’s true wilderness to hunt? I guess it’s not just about killing for me or having some kind of half assed zoo in my house.

Does anyone else have answers to my questions?

Roan can be found indigenously in Kavongo and Caprivi. The rest are only found naturally in Caprivi. They are mostly transients and I do not know if any are found now in huntable numbers.

Thanks.

Does anyone know if roan are on license in the Kavongo or if sable, roan, sitatunga, lechwe are on license in the Caprivi?

As far as I know Sitatunga and Lechwe are not on license on any Caprivi block. Roan and Sable are available in very limited numbers in Western Caprivi.

I shot a roan in the West Caprivi (Caprivi Strip) in 2003. As far as I know, this is the only Caprivi concession that has had quota for roan (Edit - see below). The quota was low, one maybe two, ditto with the sable there. Again, this was the West Caprivi areas (which I do not think are being hunted right now), I am not familiar with the East Caprivi areas.

I kind of thought that was the case with sitatunga and lechwe. Do you know who hunts western Caprivi if anyone?

Brett

Thanks Bill. Where haven't you hunted? Smiler

Right now nobody knows. Last year Alan Cillers had one of the blocks, but that was a one year deal. I believe Wambach had the other side of that area? Not 100% on that.

We will see what happens this year, if anything.

It would be nice to hunt all of those critters in Namibia, but all of them are very plentiful in Zambia, plus they have two flavors of Lechwe there!

Kai-Uwe Denker may have a quota for roan in his Nyae-Nyae concession. I recently read an article about a hunter who shot a roan on that concession last year. Kai-Uwe of course also wrote about hunting roan on his West of Khaudum concession north of bushmanland years ago. Seems I saw somewhere that he has another concession to the north of this area in the western Caprivi that may have roan as well(?).

While I don't know the date of the hunt, I also read an article in the 2008 Huntinamibia magazine about a hunter who shot a sable in the Bwabwata concession in the West Caprivi.

Your header says Royal Antelope (Neotragus pygmaeus) are found from Guinea to southern Nigeria. The #1 came from Liberia in 1971 by none other than C.J. McElroy.
The Red Lechwe (Kobus leche leche) are indigenous to Botswana, parts of Angola, NW Zambia, Katanga and Caprivi. Introduced specimens are found throughout USA, RSA, Namibia and other countries. You also have Nile, Black and Kafue Lechwe.
Common Sable (Hippotragus niger niger) are indigenous to Caprivi, N. RSA, Angola, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, DRCongo/Zaire & Tanzania. You also have the East African/Roosevelt & Royal Sable.
For Roan, you have: Southern, Sudan, Angolan, Western & East African.
Good hunting,
David

Wendell, that is correct. Allan had Babwhata East (of the old Caprivi Game park, in other words, the actual pan handle of the Caprivi, also considered western Caprivi), and John had Babwhata west. Both will likely have sable and roan on licence, when MET gives out the tender later this year (hopefully later this month, lets hold thumbs.) Roan and to a smaller degree sable can also be found in Bushmanland, Kavango region, around Khaudum especially. As far as I know, the PG part of the Naye Naye concession are not hunted by Kai Uwe, but by Black Nossob Safaris, Ernst Ludwig Cramer. I know that some of the guys that did their qualifying on elephant last year with me, namely Ziggi Hess, also hunted there, I think with Ernst-Ludwig. If someone is interested in hunting that area, I can supply some contact details.

My apologies on the confusion. No I haven't lost my mind. I was not referring to the species royal antelope, but was rather referring to a classification of highly prized plains game that I have read and heard referred to as royal antelope. Thanks.

Brett,

David is right, however, it is also not uncommon to hear Sable and Roan referred to as "Royal Anteloppe" as a class of animals rather than a specie.

Karl - I was told by Ernst-Ludwig that his area in Bushmanland is "next to" Denker's.

And yes, he must indeed have roan there as here is a picture of one they shot in Aug-2007 (trophy fee €3,000 - that's ~$4700 USD!):

Brett, I did understand where you were coming from, just wanted to clarify in case someone was left confused. I agree completely, if there is such a thing as a "Royal", it surely would be the Sable. I've had the pleasure of seeing Sable, even held my cross hair's on them before, and when I was a Taxidermist, no other trophy gave me more enjoyment. They are at the top in my humble opinion. And thanks YD for the pic. That little guy would be a real trophy!

DOJ: the Royal is smallest at 3.3 to 6.6 lbs. Followed by the Bates or Dwarf Antelope at 4.4 to 6.6 lbs. They are relatives of the Suni.
