Which ever rifle you use have a lot of bullets handy.
With my 450 No2 it took 8 rounds to knock the giraffe down, with my 9,3x74R it took only 2.

Go figure????
All solids in both cases.

Giraffe are fun to hunt.

They taste great too.

I agree the 460 WBY is not needed for a J-RAFF, but your comparison of an Eland to The stink bull, doesn't make sense. The J-Raff is a full twice the thickness through the chest as an eland, or cape Buffalo, and the heart is low, and forward between the thickest part of his shoulders. The easiest shot to reach the heart is slightly quartering face you, or going away, and the hardest is a broadside shot though the point of the shoulder! A 375 with a 300 gr solid will do the trick, however!

Quote from Kevin Robertson Perfect Shot

" In Zimbabwe for example, the 7mm RM is legal. For a high neck or barin shot, such small calibres and heavy, controlled-expansion softpoint bullets will work, but not for any of the body shots. May Ph's consider the 9.3mms or the 375 H&H and good quality solids to be the sensible minimum for all body shots, and I would tend to agree."

I always try to use enough gun but then sometimes a brainshot works just as good.

I ate giraffe at the Carnivore restaurant in Nairobi and found it to be the best among the variety of wild game served there.

Well, Mouse, at least the S&B isn't through his forehead Big Grin

I'd only use one as it is a "loaner" and the owner, Mike McMguire aka "SuperSpeed" knows the round inside out, so as to speak.

I remember the first time I fired a 460 off the bench, it lifted my little arse out of the seat Big Grin

They are much more civilised, with the KDF break in lieu of the Pendeleton de-kicker Wink

I used a 300 RUM on my huge bull in May 04 with a trophy bonded bear claw and it did fine with three shots. Then I saw my friend shoot one with a 416 twice so after seeing two shot. Go with the 400"s.

MacD37: I just used the eland as a general "large animal" comparison. Lots of buff and ele have been taken nicely with the 9.3x62 (thats what a lot of farmers used out of necessity) so I can´t see why giraffes would be that difficult.

J raffs are tough buggers, but a well place 30-06 with a proper bullet will kill them. I have seen many killed with lighter calibers. I have never shot one, and probably never will, unless it just something that needs to be done for some reason.

However a .460 is an excellent caliber for ALL that walks in Africa. Good choice, and good hunting.

Most problems with shooting them is the hunters don't know where to place the bullet on them, all the good stuff is rather high at the base of the neck and just a tad below.

i know this is more a matter of style than function since the 30-06 would work so what bullets and what velocity would you use...that is a better discussion imho. tell mike i said g'day wave
