Buffalo Cow in Save -How big?
Hi,
I took this photo of a Black Rhino bull while hunting buffalo in the south of Save, Zimbabwe Nov 2007 with Shangaan hunters.
Had a closer look at the Buffalo Cow to the right in the background the other night, and she has a quite impressive spread!
closer;
How big is she? +45"?

new_guyI say she's in the 45 range too.
Save is a great place for big buffaloes indeed!
We saw a few bulls in heards almost of this size too.
But we only shot dagga boys.
I want to get back

Safari-HuntHuge cow indeed.
But I need to ask are you sure it was a black rhino ?
Reason I ask and the picture is very unclear with the shade and all but the head itself seems very long but what caught my attention first is the ears look at the difference. Black rhino with rounded ears and white with more pointed ear and alsmot looking like an notch on the outside. Then the hump behind the head as well is very high up, also a characteristic of the white rhino.

If you have anymore pictures of the rhino please post them up and see if we can make sure.

I always try to use enough gun but then sometimes a brainshot works just as good.

SGraves155Safari-Hunt, don't many white-rhino receive ear-markings for ID purposes?

Safari-HuntSteve, yes you are correct but have a look at thr roundness of the shape of the black rhino compared to the white and that big hump behind the head.

BrettAKSCIHard to tell from the picture, but the mouth looks a little too squared off for a black rhino.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Hi,
There are some 150 black Rhinos in Save, most of them in the South there I hunted. and some 20 White Rhinos, most of them in the North. I am not sure if the bloke is black or white, but if you look at his ears, he seems to me that he is black.
We might better ask Gordon Duncan, my PH.
We bumped in to Black Rhino bulls now and then during my buffalo hunt, most un pleasent I must say, had 3 dagga boys some 30 paces in front of us and found out that we at the same time had a black Rhino bull just some 20 paces in our back.
But what about the Buffalo cow, does she make 48"?
