ivan carterpost your OLD dagga boy pics ...
as a ph there is nothing like hunting very old dagga boys , these old bush warriors are in a class of their own , cantankerous, wily and very aware of their surroundings ... simply my favourite trophy is an old old dagga boy , worn smooth across his bosses and its always these huge old guys that seem to have the broken horns...
here are a couple of photos of some broken horned buffalo i have guided on ...two of which were shot by jeff wemmer from texashuntco and one with ted jernigan .... as you can see all three were very very old , had at one tie had great spread and all three gave us a great challenge .
the terrain in the zambezi valley is such that there are lots of little springs and seeps that these old guys frequent ...the hills of chewore in aprticular are home to lots of little groups and it takes a lot of walking and patience to find fresh tracks , then even more patience as you follow their meanderings through the bush !!! ... when you do finally have him in front of you its likely he will be in the thickest of cover , and often the first time you see him clearly will be when you walk up to him after your shot ....dagga boy hunting at its best , where really and truly the hunt is far more important than the trophy and who wouldnt love one of these wonderful old trophies .... to me the very escence of old buffalo bulls .
this is ted jernigan with his bull , look at the thickness of his neck ...
simply one of the biggest bodied buffalo i saw this season .. shot with a .577 soft at about 40 yards.
this old bull had a wierd horn jutting backwards , look how thin he was and how scarred up his face is , hundreds of scars and scratches ...he had certainly been round the block , all on his own , he took about 4 hours of tracking...jeff took him with his .600 at abut 45 yards.
his boss was worn absoulutely smooth ....
this old dagga boy we saw fro the vehicle but he went into the very thickest of stuff and it took a couple of hours of very careful tracking and stalking ...ending up in a 25 yard shot with jeffs 600 , with a soft , he still went a good 150 yards.
look at that face !!!
jeff took several dagga boys but these were his best two.... gotta love those smooth bosses and all that character ...add to that all the crawling and stalking with a double gun and express sights and you have a real hunt !!!!
i would love to see your OLD buffalo bull trophies , next to elephant , the finest hunt in africa .

NavalukQuestion. Isn't the first one (hanging) much younger and softer than the rest (old bulls)?

SG, IMO, that gray colored area isn't soft boss, just hairless skin(and he's been hosed off). That's likely a very old bull judging by the wear.

A couple of shots of my Lobo buff from Masailand hunted with Ridge Taylor Safaris... and
a couple from a Chewore North buff taken with Chifuti...
last but not least, a long grass dagga boy from Zambia and Muchinga Adventures.

David W, that's the
oldest looking buff I've ever seen.

bwanamrmThanks guys but I agree with Steve... David's buff looks ancient... a real trophy!

ivan carterdave , awesome buff my friend and judging by that terrain and what i know of chete , that was a hard hunt ....
russell , some awesome dagga boys there too ..
Question. Isn't the first one (hanging) much younger and softer than the rest (old bulls)?
he was very solid ..you can see by the distinct line between horn and hair , its not a gradual change , he was not as old though , but far far larger in body !

SBTThis is my buffalo from Lokasali with Ridge Taylor. He is right at 40", but doesn't have the worn down tips of an older buff. Still, I love him.

Steve,
Terry put me on a very nice Luangwa croc! (and hippo!) He was an absolute gentleman to hunt with (comparing him to Alistar, of course) and I hope to hunt with him in Tondwa in the future to scratch the sitatunga itch. And the roan itch, probably the sable itch.... etc., etc.

chipolopoloI was Terry's second solo act when he got his ticket back in 2005 we hunted Tondwa for Sitatunga, Roan, Puku and blue duiker and shot all in 5 days after a prior (2004) 9 day stint in Bangweulu seeing zilch...Went back August 14th this year and shot the largest sable shot since the duPlooys have had the GMA (44) and a very nice livingstone eland. Terry killed 3, 40 plus sable this year. I'd send you a sable pic but I'm not smart enough. Maybe Mark could post it, he has it

BlacktailerHere's a side on shot of the old boy below. Classic roman nose, dewlap and worn boss.
His teeth were worn to the gums, he had a broken leg and he was losing weight. Took him at the right time.

AtkinsonI don't know how to post pictues but my best bull is on my web page cover..and he has been posted on AR by someone in the past..www.atkinsonhunting.com
He was about 16 years old I guessamated him by his teeth, same as I would a domestic cow but allowing for a high silicone content in the grass, so he may have been a little older..
He has more drop that I have seen on most bulls and his bosses are as smooth and worn as a baby butt from years of rubbing and polishing those mature horns..I have not measuered him but he is an easy 44 inches and probably more I think..His tail had been chewed off and he had all manner of Lion claw and teeth scars on his back and hips and neck..The skinner found a perfectly expanded Swift 375 bullet in a grisel ball on his off shoulder and his lung showed a scar center of one lung and on the edge of the second lung, all healed and he was in prime condition and healthy when I shot him with Pierre van Tonder. We assumed the wound was at least two or three years old?????? Amazing how much will to live these animals can have.
Of all the animals I have shot this one holds a special place.. I shot him at about 75 yards and he ran in a half circle for about 50 yards with his nose up and got our wind, then came straight to me, as he came up over a small knoll at about 35 yards I shot him center mass and he hit the ground with a chest spine shot. He was intent on fighting us. He is just a real old warrior and he died like one.
