Wonderful news!!! I bet lion bookings will begin to increase. Just in time for the conventions. This should be fun! The antis will be enraged if they even know what is happening!

I just received the following email from SCI about 15 minutes ago.

Member Alert
U.S. Now Allows Elephants From Zimbabwe, Zambia To Be Imported
Safari Club International (SCI) and Safari Club International Foundation (SCIF) jointly announced today that elephants legally hunted in Zimbabwe and Zambia between 2016-2018 now can be imported into the United States.

At the African Wildlife Consultative Forum (AWCF) co-hosted by Tanzania and Safari Club International Foundation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) announced that it had made positive enhancement findings for elephants legally hunted in Zimbabwe and Zambia between 2016-2018. Individuals who have hunted or wish to hunt elephants during that period will need to apply for and obtain import permits from the FWS in order to bring their elephants home.

"These positive findings for Zimbabwe and Zambia demonstrate that the Fish and Wildlife Service recognizes that hunting is beneficial to wildlife and that these range countries know how to manage their elephant populations," said SCI President Paul Babaz. "We appreciate the efforts of the Service and the U.S. Department of the Interior to remove barriers to sustainable use conservation for African wildlife."

Elephants in Zimbabwe are listed as a threatened species and are on CITES Appendix II. Elephant importation from Zimbabwe has been closed since May 2014 when the FWS, under the Obama administration, abruptly imposed an import ban.

SCI and the National Rifle Association filed suit to challenge the ban and a court has already pushed back the start date of the ban from April 4, 2014 to May 12, 2014. Individuals who legally hunted elephants in Zimbabwe during that period are now obtaining permits to bring their elephants home to the U.S. SCI and NRA continue to pursue their challenge in court to assist hunters who legally took elephants in Zimbabwe between May 12, 2014 and the end of 2015.
The FWS's announcement also brings positive news for elephant importation from Zambia. Zambia's elephants are listed as threatened in the U.S. and on CITES Appendix I. Individuals who wish to import elephants from Zambia into the U.S. will need to obtain both U.S. and CITES import documents.

The FWS also announced at the AWCF that it is working diligently on other enhancement findings and hopes to be able to make them soon.

SCI and SCI Foundation are honored that the FWS chose the AWCF as the forum to make these significant announcements. SCI will continue to work with the FWS in additional efforts to conserve African wildlife through sustainable use.

If I remember correctly Lane and I were the ones touting what a Trump Presidency would mean to the safari industry/wildlife conservation.

I can’t speak for Lane but I am very happy with the results to date.

In my opinion lion imports from Tanzania and Mozambique should be next on the list.

Aside from a comment in one of the DSC blurbs "The decision on Zimbabwe elephant before 2016 awaits legal resolution", has anything more definitive (better yet, positive) been said for the period that remains closed? My son's ivory fell into that period - about a month into it .... Encouraging for 2016 - 2018. If he's successful, maybe my other son will be able get his next year.

After working on preventing the lion uplist with Aaron those years...I can tell you the whole thing was driven by the donors of the administration....HSUS, Born-Free, PETA, etc.

The driving force behind the ivory ban was Chelsea Clinton and the Clinton Foundation. USFWS assumed she would win and allowed implementation of the agenda early.

Just FYI...the Bush Administration almost gave you a leopard ban (Laura was pushing for it) and presided over the uplisting of Polar Bear.

Steve-

Agreed that it was the Trump administration that made this possible - 100%!!! I think his two sons, who have both hunted Africa on multiple occasions, had input and the appointment of Zinke was brilliant.

Beau and I booked at least 3 Ele with CMS for 2018, just weeks ago, and were optimistic regarding the re-opening of Zim Ele imports. To say we are elated with the news would be a terrible understatement.

USFWS Approves Elephant Trophy Imports from Zimbabwe and Zambia

(posted November 14, 2017)

Today the US Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS) announced that it has made a positive enhancement finding for import of elephant hunting trophies from both Zimbabwe and Zambia for 2016, 2017 and 2018. The announcement was made in Arusha, Tanzania, during the African Wildlife Consultative Forum (AWCF) by FWS Deputy Director Greg Sheehan and Chief of Permits of DMA Tim Van Norman. The decision on Zimbabwe elephant before 2016 still awaits legal resolution. The permits for Zimbabwe require a Federal Register Notice, which will be published within one week to 10 days, then those permits can be issued. The Zambia permits are already being issued.

We have this first-hand report from John J. Jackson, III, of Conservation Force, who is attending the AWCF. "Conservation Force has expended more than half-a-million dollars on this effort and worked on the import of these elephant every day for the past three years. Thank you to Shikar Safari Club for providing the largest share of the project-specific funding."

The African Wildlife Consultative Forum is an SCI Foundation program bringing wildlife managers from across Africa together with international government agencies, NGO's and wildlife scientists to explore common approaches to conservation challenges and to create a continent-wide strategy for wildlife management. - Barbara Crown, Editor-in-Chief

https://www.federalregister.go...nuary-21-2016-and-on

SUMMARY:
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) has made a finding that the killing of African elephant trophy animals in Zimbabwe, on or after January 21, 2016, and on or before December 31, 2018, will enhance the survival of the African elephant. Applications to import trophies hunted during this time period will be considered to have met the enhancement requirement, unless we issue a new finding based on available information. The Service may replace this finding, without any notification in the Federal Register, at any time that this finding no longer reflects the available information consistent with the regulatory requirements. In reviewing each application received for import of such specimens, the Service evaluates the information provided in the application, as well as other information available to the Service on the status of the elephant population and the management program for elephants in the country to ensure that the program is promoting the conservation of the species. Each application to import sport-hunted elephant trophies must also meet all other applicable permitting requirements before it may be authorized. This determination does not affect previous determinations by the Service regarding trophy animals taken before January 21, 2016.

My fear, and hopefully it is misplaced, is that by personally intervening to halt the reopening of imports he now personally owns the elephant trophy importation issue. For him to now allow the reopening of imports to proceed it will be a decision that he and he alone will own . . . since he stopped the implementation of the new policy only he can effectively allow the new policy to move forward. That makes it less likely that he does so. Had he simply allowed the USFWS order to become effective he could defer responsibility to the USFWS, the experts at the agency, the Secretary of the Interior, etc. His personal intervention means he owns the issue politically going forward. Hard to see how that is a good thing. Sure hope I am wrong.
