Here is an action photo sequence of Bob Glick taking a kudu bull in Chewore with his Krieghoff .500 double rifle at 150 yards! Unbelievable shot - precision shooting with a double rifle never fails to impress me. The shot was a perfect lunger and the bull ran 30 yards and died. Note the second photo, where the shot has been fired but the bull has not yet been hit.

Are you sure that bull was 150 yards away? It looks quite a bit closer to me. It might be 150 to that big tree in the background.
A very good sequence of pictures, David.

I'm pretty sure it was 150, though it may have been a few yards shy. Rich Tabor paced it and he has relatively short legs! Anyhow, I'm certain it was around 150. Having said that, when Bob took the shot, all of us believed the distance to be little over a hundred yards. I attribute this to the deceptive quality of riversand. I think the photos are also deceptive - I was closer to Bob's shoulder than I would have liked, hence the reason the foreground is so blurred. It is usually a good idea to be a few metres behind and slightly to the side of the shooter, to get a good perspective. I also may have inadvertedly zoomed in a little.
I'm going to post a few more action shots here in a moment with approximate distances, just for comparison. For your information, you are not the only one who has questioned the distance in these photos. I think photo number 2 best illustrates the shot distance. I mean, how long is it taking for that bullet to get there anyway? My guess is that the trees are close to 300 yards. I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures. I shall be posting a report on the Bob Glick safari in due course.

Looks like he has some kind of Hi Viz front sight on his gun. Anyone know what the drop would be from 100 yards to 150 for a 500? I would certainly not take that shot, evn with a scope, unless I knew where the thing was shooting.

I know Bob also (since he was 13); he is probably the best game shot I know. He hunts and shoots constantly and he shot the 500 almost daily for weeks before the hunt.

Thanks. Those are great. Was it his intent to shoot plains game with this rifle, or was it an animal of opportunity?

I would really like to learn to shoot my .458 Lott with open sights and carry it when DG hunting with confidence that I can shoot plains game as well.

If you will notice the camera is focused on the Kudu, with a long lens, and the shooter is blured. This is an optical illusion makeing the Kudu look much closer than he is, IMO! This is similar to looking down the road with a pair of bynoculars, focused on oncoming cars, with the hood of your car in the fore of the sight picture. A car 500 yds away looks like it is about to pass you, going the other way.

I believe, since the distance was stepped off, there is little doubt the distance was close to 150 yds. This is not unbelievable anyway. If he had been shooting a single shot, chambered with the same cartridge, nobody would have doubted the distance. A man who knows his rifle be it single barrel, or double barrel, a 150 yd shot is not that unusual!

My congratulations to the shooter, but more so on the camera man! That was some good photography! beer

PETER, that is a Krieghoff 500NE and the sights are now, I believe, standard fare! The back sight is cut out so you can see right through the blade, which has a fiberoptic lin from the bottom virtivlly up to the bottom of the wide "V", the front sight is a fiberoptic bead of a different color. They are very good sights, though a little fragile, and certainly not classic!

MacD37, could be. My 500/416 does not have that type of front sight. Whether classic or not, they certainly catch your eye! Quite a few skeet shooters use them, as in Skeet you are NOT supposed to look at the front sight!

My .470 NE has a front fiber optic sight installed by the factory, and classic or not, it sure makes a big difference! Good shooting. Bwanna: We need to have some reduced loads for the .458 Lott made up to shoot plains game with. Terry Wieland talks about those as being "fun" loads to shoot.
