Returning from a fund raiser at Grant's Farm/Anheuser-Busch(Missouri) last weekend, I was looking for some papers when I came across a letter dated February 1980 from an old friend and South African PH. (Prior to the Internet, most communications were done via snail mail). He had advised me of the forthcoming seasons and trophy fees he was offering for RSA & Rhodesia. Regardless of the rate exchange (ZAR to USD) he was charging Rand/$1.20 USD). Here's the trophy fee from his list:
Kudu $360
Gemsbok $390
Red Hartebeest $240 (may be free)
Blesbok $90
Blk Springbok $300
Springbok, common Free
Mt Reedbuck $180
Eland $600
Duiker $60
Steinbok, Baboon, Jackal Free
Zebra $360
Blue Wildebeest $300
Bushbuck $180
Reedbuck, common $300
Impala $96
Daily rates were $240 USD per day for 1x1

Hunts in Rhodesia/Zim:
A triple play Buffalo, Sable and Waterbuck would cost you: $2,160.00
Daily rate:$360 1x1 or $300 2x1

Most outfits did their own dip/pack and things went very smooth. My only regret is losing over 4,000 photo's in the flood of May 2,010.

Actually the RSA plains game rates look expensive. Its 1980 prices - 34 years later you can hunt RSA for much cheaper on a inflation adjusted basis.

For those who wish to do the math, $1.00 in 1980 is the equivalent of $3.03 in 2014.

One Rand in 1980 is the equivalent of 22.20 Rand today.

One Rand was worth $1.20 in 1980.

One Rand is worth $0.094 (9.4 cents) today.

Therefore if the outfitter was charging $1,000 for something in 1980 his take was 1,200 Rand for whatever service he provided.

Today he would have to get 26,640 Rand to have the same purchasing power as 1,200 Rand in 1980.

The cost in U.S. Dollars would then be 26,640 Rand multiplied by 9.4 cents per Rand or $2,504.

So, to account for inflation in both countries and the relative changes in value in currencies, spending the equivalent of $1,000 in 1980 would cost $2,504 today. The value of $2,504 today vs 1980 is $826.40.

Bottom line is hunting in South Africa costs about 18% less than it did in 1980.

Yes, I'm bored.

Found an error in my earlier calculations.

Yes, I'm bored, very bored to bother with this.

Therefore if the outfitter was charging $1,000 for something in 1980 his take was 1,200 833 Rand for whatever service he provided.

Today he would have to get 26,640 18,492 Rand to have the same purchasing power as 833 Rand in 1980.

The cost in U.S. Dollars would then be 18,492 Rand multiplied by 9.4 cents per Rand or $1,738.

So, to account for inflation in both countries and the relative changes in value in currencies, spending the equivalent of $1,000 in 1980 would cost $1,738 today. The value of $1,738 today vs 1980 is $573.

Bottom line is the cost of purchasing items in South Africa is approximately 42% less than it was in 1980.

Yes, I'm bored.

The interesting note is that the original Buff/Sable/Waterbuck would have cost $7,200 or 6,000 Rand back in 1980 assuming a 14 day hunt. In strictly dollar terms, that $7,200 would be $21,816 today. In Rand terms, the 6,000 Rand would be 133,200 Rand today equating to $12,520.

It appears, based on the numbers, that dangerous/exotic game is priced at a 74% premium to the Rand costs compared to 1980.

This is obviously a simplistic analysis and one of the key variables would be that some outfitter costs would be dollar denominated rather than Rand denominated let alone that safari inflation vis a vis concession leases etc have probably outpaced inflation.

$21,816 for a buff/sable/waterbuck hunt sounds pretty reasonable.

$12,520 and I'm thinking sold 30 seconds after posting.

In 1980, I was 5 years old and just starting kindergarten. I had bigger fish to fry back then!

Just returned from my 3rd safari in June. I'd say I've had it better than most at this point in my life/career.

Take a look at Jason Bridger - Kanana package offer in Botswana advertised on AR.

You can do hunt in Botswana today for $7K than in 1980 in South Africa would have cost close to $5K.

That shows you the value in plains game in Africa.

Dangerous game pricing is a whole other story.

Given that I much rather hunt Eland than Cape Buffalo and don't care much for shipping back trophies (more money for hunting) I will be hunting a fair bit in Botswana for plains game in the years to come.

I think South Africa will get cheaper yet than Botswana - the game ranching industry has to harvest millions of animals a year. South Africa with its middle class has a market for game meat.

What is the going rate for Eland biltong?
