Dora

Dora was born a few months ago, with a bad leg.

We actually thought she might have a problem with it.

But, our vet devised a method - plastic tube!

Which he placed on her leg.

As you can see, she has recovered completely.

And like all our cheetahs, love to bite my feet!

Adorable for sure!
That is the only kind of cat I would have as a pet.
She thinks she is a puppy dog.

From wikipedia:

Closest relative is the puma/cougar/mountain lion.

Funny name, cheetah:

"Etymology
The vernacular name "cheetah" is derived from cītā (Hindi: चीता), which in turn comes from the Sanskrit word citrakāyaḥ (चित्रकायः) meaning "bright" or "variegated". The first recorded use of this word has been dated back to 1610.[2][3] An alternative name for the cheetah is "hunting leopard".[4] The scientific name of the cheetah is Acinonyx jubatus.[5] The generic name Acinonyx originated from the combination of two Greek words: akinetos means motionless, and onyx means claw.[6][7] A rough translation of the word would be "non-moving claws", a reference to the limited retractability (capability of being drawn inside the paw) of the claws of the cheetah relative to other cats'. The specific name jubatus means "maned" in Latin, referring to the dorsal crest of this animal.[8]"

I came across a couple of male cheetah brothers resting under a shade tree in Botswana in 2001.
They let us drive to within 20 feet of them in the bakkie.

Soon as I hopped off the back of the bakkie to go pet them,
they got up and ran off.
Of course I was carrying my featherweight .375 H&H while trying and failing to pet a wild cheetah.
My Mama did not raise a fool!

Dora was born alone, no brothers or sisters.

When you breed them, do you do something to minimize inbreeding or work with a zoo on them?

It is really neat what you have done with your menagerie!

Yes we do.

We have a breeding program with several conservancies in the country.

This applies to all our animals, not just cheetahs.

The deal with Cheetahs, unless some new evidence has been found in the past few years, is that all Cheetahs are related and their DNA can be traced back to one female.

Here is one article on the subject. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC46261/

An interesting side note is that at one point in time a form of Cheetah and Hyena werre native to North America.

Beautiful!

Back in the early '80s, the Dewildt Cheetah Sanctuary in South Africa had an arrangement with a photographic safari concession which had been carved out of the Pilanesberg. They would periodically rotate a number - can't remember how many it was - of males into the area. The idea was that putting x number of males in relatively close proximity in a wilderness area would raise the sperm counts.

I'm sure the husbandry of captive breeding's gone way beyond that now, but it seemed to work for them.

Many of the animals involved were captive-bred themselves, and were not shy about coming up for a scratch behind the ear.

A few years ago some conservationist was able to get trail cam pictures of wild cheetah in Mali of all places! Incredible.

I wonder if there are any wild cheetahs left in the Middle East.

They are extinct in India Pakistan & Afghanistan. Probably also Iran.

Saeed, have you ever tried to train them to hunt gazelles?

Magnificent creatures that have fascinated me since childhood.
Was told by a PH in Namibia that I was to shoot on sight if I saw a cheetah on his property. I'm afraid the shot would have been a certain miss. There are some animals I have no desire to hunt or cull.

The hunting imperative was part of every man's soul; some denied or suppressed it, others diverted it into less blatantly violent avenues of expression, wielding clubs on the golf course or racquets on the court, substituting a little white ball for the prey of flesh and blood.
