I just got word from Charl who hunted for specialized species with a client now, that they could have shot the possible new record for Blue Duiker. I have no pictures waiting for Charl to come back.

We don't hunt around with a tape in the pocket but its sure nice to get some luck on your side.

On the same trip they got a very nice 9" vaal reebuck, bontebuck, caracal, cape bushcbuck and a good tsesebe in Limpopo.

Only missed out on the grysbuck from the wishlist.

Should have some pictures by the weekend hopefully.

Blue Duiker are so small and dainty, it must be hard to sell a record book from a year-old. Cool little animals. Fredrik, hope you have it on film!

Same here. I told DOJ that he's got me fired up to go back a shoot a bunch of the little guys for a mount like that.

I'm curious, having never hunted duikers, it seems like the standard method is to beat some brush and shoot the first one that runs by with a shotgun. (Someone please correct me if there is more to it.) How does someone judge trophy quality or even sex on those little things when they're running past you for dear life?

Anyway, congrats on the duiker to the hunter! Sounds like he's having a fun time.

I guess you have to hunt them as a specific target not a animial of chance. Depending on the species of Duiker, like the Red Duiker is alot like turkey hunting, the Blue is a bit like rabbit hunting in some damn thick brush with limited opportunity for a shot. Also Duikers like extremly thick cover. Also they are small, it is not like shooting at a barn door or a bull comming thru the door. All I can say is hunting the tiny guys is more exciting (to me) than Buffalo.

Sevens, true. Where Blue Duiker's are concerned, they are driven past the hunter's somewhat conceiled position where he/she takes aim with a shotgun and fires. Rarely to you get to "trophy hunt" a Blue. In Central Africa, some Duiker's are called in. They tend to respond to a distress call and come bolting in like a flash. You usually only get them still for a matter of seconds. There are many species of Duiker and just as many ways to hunt them. Some are truly a challenge.

You can also usually call them in with a predator call or a squeak....... I've no idea why it works so well but it does. In fact, it's not uncommon for them to come in at the run.

As I understand it they do call the Blue in central Africa and also other, I was speaking from my limited experience and in the Eastern Cape they do hunt with dogs and beaters. We were even able to call in Suni but not on a regular basis.

There's actually quite a lot of the smaller antelope that'll often come to a call up to and including bushbuck but from my experience, the easiest one to call in is the red duiker.

In Mozambique last year the red duiker responded readily to the call the trackers made with their hands and noses. I shot mine in a spot and stalk situation with a 375 solid but I'm sure eventually I would have killed one by calling it. The blue duiker also answered the call and would stand long enough to determine if they were male and female most times. The one I shot was with a shotgun and I personally only saw a litte furry ball when they said shoot. The suni can be called but in this area it was not necessary as they were everywhere and you could get a nice male by spot and stalk any morning with a shotgun.

Having hunted the suni and red duiker a couple of other times unsuccessfull I was amazed at how easy the hunt was in coastal Mozambique.

You lot are going to shoot me. I just got back yesterday and am tired like I have not been for ages. Drove 8000km's in the last 4 weeks.

Got up this morning with the sole purpose of posting the pictures of one of the most special hunts I have done in my life. Got in the bakkie and drove to town (I do not have internet on the ranch), just to realise half way there that I forgot my camera with all the pics at home.

Ok, I'll tell the story in short, with more detail later. It MIGHT be the new nr. 1. The longest horn scores 2 and 4/8" (read half)and the record on RW is 2 and 7/8. Total SCI score puts it in the 8 and a half class, but might be more. I do not hunt with a tape in the pocket, and we had to borrow one from another guy.

Trophies going to Lifeform soon, where we will have it properly measured.

You guys are all right. I wish I could say I was such a grand PH to get my client such a top trophy, but it is just PLAIN luck. We were hunting in the Eastern Cape and three black guys and a JAck Russel was beating the thickets for us. My client, 72 year old Steve Pasquan from Belvedere CA, used our shotgun. A flash of grey had Steve in a tight turn to his left, and he fired a good 45 degree BEHIND him. I was convinced he missed, as he killed a couple of wrist size saplings in the process.

There was no sign of the Duiker, but shortly afterwards we heard the little Jack barking. Solly, my tracker ran of, and soon came back what turned out to be the most fantastic little Blue Duiker trophy.

Both male and female have horns, and we are not picky about trophy size, as you simply cannot sit around and look at them. They shoot past you in the blink of an eye, and you have to be very fast with the shotgun to make the shot.

Will post pictures soon. The Vaalie is a monster too!

Charl,

In case you missed the latest PHASA newsletter:

The following was received from Maria Felix, President of Hunter International Brokerage Services, Inc, re the blue duiker in consignments.

A blue duiker (CITES II) in your consignments - this message is an alert I want to send to you to please ensure that the scientific name reflected on the permit is “Philatomba monticola”.

For the past 20 years, it has always been “Cephalophus monticola” which F&W has always accepted. However, this time, they will only accept what the cites data base and ESA list shows, and that is “Philatomba monticola”. I do not know why suddenly this has become an issue with F&W (we asked but did not get an answer) but we have no choice but to abide otherwise the trophy will be subject to seizure.

Congratulations Charl! And to the lucky hunter as well! That and the vaalie are two that I still need, so save me a couple of monsters! By the way, I have called in Red Duiker, Grey Duiker, Sharpes Grysbok and Suni with a predator call. I use the T-Rex predator call. I called in a huge Red Duiker one morning in camp, but couldn't shoot it because it was in camp. Big Grin

Firstly:

Charl, my congratulations for being so very lucky to have chosen the right hunting venue, the right three beaters and a Jack Russel that just knew instingctively that your client's shot was good and went after the trophy! Secondly, my salutations about being honest and admitting that it was just luck! Big Grin Congratulations to the client for making a good shot!

Steve,

If you ever thought that PH's were a bunch of, eh, well, of, eh ?? You should rather not try to meet a zooological, or any other, taxonomist! They have a rule that basically says that the very first name ever given - following the correct procedures - to a species IS the name of that species. Now these guys just love to dig in old archives and try to find out who was actually the first to use the 'correct' procedures to describe and name a species. For them what everyone knows and accepts is quite irrelevant!

What I know is that sometime between 1983 and 2005 - being the dates of publication of my two copies of Smithers' - the scientific name of the blue duiker had changed. No matter how well Chephalophus monticola is/was known, the taxonomists will insist that it really is none other that Philantomba monticola My advice is to just accept and adapt to the "old" or original first name of Philatomba. US F&W carries a lot of clout, and best please them! You will not beat the taxonomists! Big Grin

In good hunting.

Andrew,

I can't disagree with you at all. I don't know if I'm more puzzled that USF&WS should just have noticed the problem or that the name somehow got commonly changed in the first place.

either way, it's bloody odd!

Lucky for me, I am the reason that Maria Felix sent out a notification on the Blue Duiker name change. My trophies are being held up by the USFWS until there is a new CITES permit issued with the new name Philatomba monticola. The name was changed in 2007. Since 1789 both names were used and synonyms of each other. The real problem is that the Mozambique agriculture dept didn't get the memo on the name change and they only recognize the name Cephalophus. They don't want to issue another permit until Geneva CITES gives them the updated info. Meanwhile USFWS is charging me $50 per day to keep the trophies. Fun times.
As far as hunting this blue duiker that I got, I did call it in using nasally mouth calls. My predator calls that I brought didn't bring in any of the small antelope. I think it actually scared them away.

My name is also Steve Robinson but don't hold that against me Smiler

Thanks for the kind words people. Steve, thanks, I get all my e-mails on my cell phone so got the updated news from PHASA. Our clients got F..ed so hard by Big Buck Taxidermy that we now use Life Form. They are more expensive but on the ball. When I phoned Karen about the email from PHASA a day after I got it she told me it was old news!

So, I've got one more PG hunt in SA, and then I'm off to Moz. for 4 months of Ellephant, Leopard and Sable. I'll be back in November and give some more pics through!

Anyone that want to chat, drop Frederik a line on frederik@infinito-safaris.com

Oh, and UEG, the booking dinner in Reno is on you Sir! I have secured some of the best Valie and Blue Duiker concessions available now!

Charl,

Absolutely excellent trophies. The blue duiker is nearly a full inch longer than the one I shot and the vaalie must have two inches on mine. A big well done to you and your client.

I could never just get excited about a "buck" I could eat off a "bun".

Legistine actu? Quid scripsi?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Both the trophies are what I would call: "You get only one like that in a lifetime of hunting!" Yet this lucky guy got two on one safari! Well done Infinito!

Hearty congratulations to all involved!
