260 300 WM 416 Rigby Funny thing is, the only one I have is the 300 WM. The closest I have to the other two is a 7mm-08 and a 375 H&H and they are two of my favorite guns. However, if I were limited to only three guns, I would opt for something slightly smaller and slightly larger. "...Africa. I love it, and there is no reason for me to explore why. D99 - While living in Namibia as an American I was told that I wouldn't get permits for two of the same power (.30-06 and 7mm mag) and that we were limited to 3 firearms period. Now that is all subject to who is working at home affairs and handing out the permits. So, for me it is a realistic thread. It sounds like you know more about the whole world than anyone else here. Next time I'll email you first so we don't have such stupid threads...

I have always thought that the 30 cals were a compromise, good if you are a one rifle guy but most people can afford two or three rifles and thus I wonder why the 30s have held up. Maybe I am just flat out wrong. Assuming one is a handloader, my choices would be: a. For varmints and plinking, a 218 Bee with a fixed 6x scope. You can load this economically and it's not too much for squirrels nor too little for coyotes. It would be a single shot rifle because each shot in a varmint rifle is supposed to be measured and thus the only shot you need. This also makes the package handy. b. For medium game, eg deer, elk and lesser "plains game", a 7x57 bolt rifle with a fixed 4x scope. Pleasant to shoot, good bullet selection, great penetration, doesn't do too much meat damage. c. For large and dangerous game, a double in 450-400 nitro without scope. Anthing bigger is too heavy to lug around. If I were not a reloader, I would have to go with "popular" calibers, a. 223 bolt with 3-9x b. 308 bolt with 4x c. 375H&H with 1.5-5x Now if this were a one-gun thread, I would have to say combo gun with 9.3x74R over 12 ga. 3 only? Have to sell some then... .22 LR: One of the greatest cooking-pot filler ever 7x57: Just like it as an all-round caliber, and I never actually needed loooooooooooooong shots 45/70 in a lever action: Punches big fat holes very fast through almost anything, in a handy rifle. I'm not a PH, and don't need to back-up clients. So I can happily leave out my .458 Lott as it wouldn't really see any significant use in a "limited to..." scenario Philip

An old thread I know--but I thought the question interesting. I actually have a three gun battery (if you exclude the milsurps). I chose: 1. 6.5x55 (Will one day rebarrel to 256 Newton) 2. 300 H&H 3. 404J Ronn

I have a 20VarTarg for the small stuff, ( ranges to far for the 22LR where I shoot, besides the 20VT is a fantastic round) but for everything else my 7x57 or 404 will do it all. Von Gruff.

An interesting variation, if one had a Savage 110-116 series--with the ease barrels can be changed--one might tackle the question this way: 1. 6.5x06 AI 2. 30/06 AI 3. 40 Brown Whelan Single action, just change barrels. Single case, just change sizing dies. Bullets and cases all easy to come buy--this should work for North American game. For the hunter on the budget. Ronn
