Ray,
I can get 3 in the mag with one in the chamber with reliable feeding.

I've been running dummy rounds through this thing all week as I've home bored nursing the flu... Nothing else to do but cycle the action and dream of Africa.

George,
Those are the NECG classic sights, except for the rear I removed the standing fixed site and replaced it with a folding leaf.

Mac,
Haven't actually shot it yet. Planning on hitting the range at the end of the month. I am working up a few loads, 400grain Aframes, 380 NorthForks and some Beartooth hard cast just for plinking. The goal is 2500 fps

I am curious why the rear sight is so close to the action. If the rear sight is too close to the shooter's eye, some guys cannot focus well and shoot poorly.

How many rifles do you have with that unusual rear sight placement?

I have two rifles this is one of them, where I've mounted the rear site as far back to the action as I could get it.

I have other rifles with Iron sights on them but not used.

Sorry guys, but only a wanker would put the rear sight that far back IMO. (See EDIT below)

I'm wondering if it is because the open sights will be rarely (if ever?) used, and thus is conveniently out of the way beneath the scope bell so it won't be seen when using the scope at low magnification. Confused

A folding rear sight doesn't seem too smart to me either when on a DGR. It might be brushed down at the wrong moment...

I'd seriously consider changing that setup Carmelo.

EDIT:

It has come to my attention that some posters have misunderstood the meaning behind my first sentence in this post. One of the downsides of having such an international forum is that certain words have differing meanings in differant regions. And certainly when it comes to slang. One such example is "Wanker". In many places around the world, this is not really litterally connected to masturbation, as some here have interpreted it (although this interpretation is sometimes common in England), but is a slang word for someone you think is acting unwise, unreasonable or silly. It is a word that in most places is nottaken as a serious insult. There are far worse slang words for that purpose.

Hi Carm...

Good looking basic hunting rifle, great caliber choice.

That looks like a Montana action correct? How do you like the look and feel of it. It obviously feeds ok since you have been playing with it.

Hope it shoot well for you...

I would agree that a folding rear sight is a recipe for trouble unless the rifle is used exclusively with a scope at safe distances.

Also, does the front scope base interfere with loading the rifle with the scope off?

But to be fair, this rifle is a huge step ahead of the Marlin 45-70 that you previously advocated Carmelo.

Jim,
Thanks!
Feels pretty good. The action was a bit tight when I first got it but I must have cycled it a good 1000 times and it has loosened up nicely. The Hogue Overmolded Stock is VERY COOL! Doesn't slip feels great, fits my shoulder perfectly. However the proof will be when I get a chance to test her out at the range.

Just curious as to how much it weighs in at? I had thought about a 404 also, I have one of the professional actions in left hand on order, but will probabley get a left hand long action in before I see the professional action. I'll look foreward to hearing reports on your new addition.

Guys, I'm kinda new here, so bear with my questions. Why do a couple of posters give this guy such crap? What is up with that. He shows a nice rifle, and some guys try to rip him a new one. Nothing like the courage that the anonymity of the internet gives one, I guess. BTW, if the rear sight placement works for you, go for it.

Nice lookiing rifle and a very good caliber. A couple of questions. Why try for 2500 fps? Are you planning on a longer scope to open up the loading port to max? Is the Hogue stock strong enough for a hard recoiling rifle? What does it weigh?

The fold down sights can be dangerous. I never understood them. Winchester used them on the pre 64 Alaskans for some reason also.

Mickey,
thanks, the fold down leaf actually has a set screw that locks it into place. I don't plan to ever use the rear sight unless in the case of scope failure or hunting very close range in thick Jess. So this setup seemed to work for me as I like the long sight radius between front and rear sight. Yeah the Hogue is pretty strong, Its a full synthetic stock ling most others with extra strength in the are of the action for big bores. I love it actually. Weighs less than 2 lbs.
2500FPS is just a magic number I chose for no special reason in particular. I know the rifle/action can handle it. This number will most likely change as I do my load development. I have data from SAEED that I am using to start with.

1: as the distance between the sights increases (focal length) the inherent accuracy increases. I LIKE sights as far back as possible. Never would consider it with a folder though.

2: a wanker is a tosser, is a blindboy, is a gent that likes.. well, HIMSELF a bit too much and often.

Tembo, A while back, there was another poster "Carmelo" that was an advocate of the lever 45-70. Whatever you may think of that as a DGR, the real issue was the attitude and arrogance displayed by that poster. The present day Carmelo claims that an imposter was posting as him, and in fact the present day Carmelo does not talk nor act like the old poster. Many think that should be the end of it, me too.

As a side note, a PM is sent when someone does not want to make a public issue on what they consider to be a private matter, and it is generally considered bad form to make a PM public, as the person would have made a public post if desired in the first place. Obviously, some feel differently.

It can be difficult to step into a forum, not knowing the baggage being carried by some.

Some people carry a book with the names of all those they have met and how they will react to them forever more, some don't. I have carried a book myself, still do to some extent. Todays Carmelo seems to be not the same as the old Carmelo. I am a nobody on this forum, just a reader. I will read anyones comments as long as they have some civility to them.

Good Shooting!

8mm and Tembo,

The irony is that while the former Carmelo was an ardent 45-70 advocate, the "new" Carmelo took a 45-70 to Africa on a safari (although he did not actually hunt with it). And the "new" Carmelo's website has a heavy focus on the 45-70. Now the 45-70 is a popular caliber, but what is the chance that there are two Carmelo's floating around in this world that are fixated on the 45-70?

It is also important to keep in mind that old Carmelo spam-filled this forum trying to bring it down. He also threatened to load a destructive virus onto AR's server, claiming himself to be a computer security expert (he might be). It would have been a felony under federal law for Carmelo to actually take down AR's server, and I am glad he changed his mind about doing it.

When the new Carmelo showed up, most of us rapidly concluded that old Carmelo = new Carmelo, hence the baggage.
