African wildlife as a pet? Think again: http://www.nydailynews.com/new...vis_attacks_wom.html
Apparently, the attack was extremely savage, more so than reported. An EMT who relieved the guy on duty at the time said that the woman's face was completely gone down to the bone, and that all that remained of her two forearms was hanging flesh. SCI Life Member DSC Life Member

I read a similar story a few years ago. A couple of chimps at a wildlife sanctuary got jealous because the owners had made a birthday cake for one of the other chimps. The chimps went nuts and attacked an older man ripping his testicles and foot off and chewing up his face and hands. The chimps would not let up the attack until shot off the victim. Every time I see some "tame" chimp on TV I cringe now. I think I'd rather take my chances with a leopard than a psychotic chimp. **** Found a couple of links to articles about the attack I mentioned above: http://www.boston.com/news/nat...anzee_attack_probed/ http://www.boston.com/news/nat...cs_leaves_questions/ ______________________ I don't shoot elk at 600 yards for the same reasons I don't shoot ducks on the water, or turkeys from their roosts. Teenagers these days! "Psycho simian" has a nice alliterative ring to it. Maybe it was the tea with Xanax that tipped him over the edge. Do they teach that technique in veterinary school, I wonder? Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

A little more information: Her eyes were also apparently ripped out, and when the EMT's found her, her upper pallate was lying a few yards away from her body with the teeth intact. Getting word now that she did not make it. SCI Life Member DSC Life Member

I usde 300winmag with 180gr. Federal ammo this year, my sons will join the fun with 270winmags and 140gr Accubonds any medium Caliber will work on Baboons and small to medium monkeys and baboons Apes are much bigger and would be better served with a large cal or double bore rifle. Not sure where it would be legal to hunt apes--don't think you can at all. nothin sweeter than the smell of fresh blood on your hunting boots

I know this sounds a bit morbid, but, how do effective is the 300 Win Mag on em? They go down, right now? Run around???? What happens? When you say ape, does that include chimps? I know gorillas are protected... 9.3 x 62 should work, or my 30-06? Just use heavy bullets?

Article on the 911 call the owner made: "He's eating her," http://www.stamfordadvocate.com/localnews/ci_11726742
Apparently, before this happened the owner decided to slip the chimp some Xanax to calm it down a little. Unfortunately, from what I have read, drugs like Xanax have exactly the opposite effect on apes as it does on people, with the added bonus that it removes inhibitions on behavior in which they would not otherwise engage. "He's eating her"??? Yes, chimps do that (the man attacked in California a couple of years ago had his genetials eaten by their loving pet before the attack was stopped), but what makes this revelation even more incomprehensible is that the owner apparently stated in a Today Show interview that she would own another one and that others should not be discouraged from doing so. Eish! No pleasant...but chimps aint great pets. Generally speaking, primates make very poor pets. They are strong, intelligent and can be unpredictable. More to the point, most kept as pets that I have seen seem to suffer from very high anxiety which usually manifests as aggression. Yep, shitty choice of pet...

Didn't Saeed get chewed a bit by a raccoon that didn't like the idea of being left alone in it's cage? I think the problem becomes the animal requires 24/7 attention, and, any threat to that might invoke an action by the animal..

Backing up to the baboon comments, I shot one in Tanzania right in the ass while running away with a 416 Remington Magnum. The 400 grain Swift A Frame went all the way through and came out through his neck. When I got to the baboon, it had an erection you would not believe. It still had it after the pictures and after it was thrown in the truck! The trackers were very amused.

Not only her. From what I've seen of the coverage, everyone in that town. It's bizarre listening to all the neighbors and friends who knew "Travis" talking about how they'd never believe the Chimp was capable of this because he was such a good boy and practically the woman's son. How would the average Stamford CT resident, who apparently doesn't know the difference between a chimpanzee and a monkey because they keep calling it a monkey, know what any fully mature chimp is capable of? The local PD keeps looking for causes such as its lyme disease medication, or if the woman's new hairstyle set it off. They keep talking as if the chimp wouldn't normally do that because it was "Travis." And not considering maybe "Travis" did what is normal at some point for a chimp. Are they still completely unaware it's a dangerous thing to have a large powerful non-human primate living with you? And that a Chimpanzee doesn't need a really good reason to do this. At least not in human terms. The way they talk, sometimes I get the impression that they're trying to find out why the chimp crossed the line and became a lawbreaker. As if the chimp knew or cared about breaking criminal statutes. And everyone talks about the way she raised it to be as human as possible as if that would somehow mean the animal is less likely to attack, and can't conceive of the possibility that maybe it made the attack more likely. Maybe they're not aware it's non-human. Just as that woman who owned it still isn't aware it really wasn't her son. It's a creeping sickness. When I take my dogs to the vet, the receptionist calls me the dog's "daddy" when she tells the vet I'm there with the dog for the visit. I love my dogs, but they're my dogs. They're not my kids. Am I the only one left in this country that knows the difference.

The one i feel sorry for is the chimp. Man takes these animals out of the wild and trys to turn them into pets. Not meant to be. My wife and i went to the pond to adopt a dog,we filled out afew sheets and were told we could have the dog for our farm like home. The day i go to pick up the dog i was told i could not adopt it. I asked why and was told that on the form i stated that the dog would stay in the barn, with the cat and farm animals two times a week. They said you have to keep him in the house. I said that i can not always do that. They said i can not adopt the dog.By the time it was over they went to my employer i had to go to the union for help, did not get the dog but still had a job. There is a place for animals to be and a place for them not to be.POINT TWO.i always helped a guy feed his horses .He was a horse trader. He had a habit of always putting his face up to the horses face and kiss them and he showed this to people who would be looking to buy a horse. He would say look how people safe his horses are.One day a guy and his family came, the guy had a full beard, the seller showed the famiily how safe his horses are leaves the family a lone with the horse. The guy goes up to the horse,i said i would not do that the guy rubs his face with the horse, the horse grabbed the guys beard and ripped the hair and skin off that side of the guys face.Respect animals for what theyare and leave them in there own space. The last i know the horse trader had a big problem.

I do feel sorry for the lady who got mauled. But that must have been a confusing last few minutes of life for "Travis." Here he is, doing what apparently does come naturally to sexually mature male chimps under some circumstances. Now everyone all of a sudden has a problem with him. And the cops who he used to play with shoot him when he opens the door. For all we know, from the chimp's point of view he was just trying to hop in the car with Officer Friendly to get away from crazy "mom" who tried to knife him when he chimp-logically eliminated what he saw as a threat to the rest of the family. For all we know, from the chimp point of view, he might have done something that he thought the rest of the chimps should have patted him on the back for. The rest of the chimps being his "mom." Sort of the same thing as when your cat brings you a dead mouse. Instead of the pat on the back, she tried to stab him. How is a chimp supposed to know chewing the face off of an "outsider" would be considered wrong by those he lived with? Then the formerly friendly cop who used to offer him macadamia nuts if he played in the middle of the street goes and caps him instead. I'm guessing that when he crawled off to die in the last safe place he knew, he was probably wondering why all these humans around him had gone berzerk and crazy-violent. After all, he may have just been laying down a little chimp-law on the intruder as he was hard-wired to do. I could be wrong. What I do know is we don't really understand chimps. And they sure as hell can't be expected to understand us. This woman was obviously thinking about no one but herself and what made her happy.

In this case, I understand the chimpanzee's behavior way better than I do the woman's! Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.
