Oxford Thesaurus of WALTER: 'Too much of a good thing can be bad for you.' Hence no thread - for general safety- I assume. As for Marinade, perhaps better some ingredients are not revealed, but whatever ge puts in there seems to be popular with the local Hyenas. ( Ask Saeed about that story.) Walters very speciality is BBQ a handsome Impala lovingly for the entire day in camp. However only to discover upon the return of the REAL hunters in the evening, who were met by an excited Walter and a rancid smell, that he had choosen the Leopard bait that had, lets say, matured a few days too long. He choose it himself at the butchery, it was hanging next to the only other one impala there - a fresh one. You still want to know what was in his marinade?

Yip sure do. Walter is my hero. To still cook for all of them and not put say cyanide or warfrin in the special cuts for his most dear friends after all the abuse they give him. He has to be a really kind hearted man.

You are absolutely right - Walter is one of the most kind hearted individuals I have ever met BUT he still is impossible on so many levels.. (He is still in my very bad book so I can not use to many positive superlative at this point, but once issues are written off I shall tell you some fine stories about this remarkable person.)

I enjoy the reports from the hunt, as usual! Great photos as well! Today is the start of Walter's hunt. He was up, ready dressed, and waiting in the mess tent before anyone. He was waiting for his PH, Dean. As soon as Dean arrived; "I have to tell you something before we go off hunting. My pills are in my left pocket. My wife's telephone number in my right pocket. You only call her if I am dead. Not before. Or YOU will be dead on your feet, just like I am!" Dean was not sure what to make of all this, so Walter added: "I think you and me have to BOND together. Do you want to go to my tent?" "No no, we can BOND in here with everyone looking" "OK, you walk at no more than 1 mile an hour. You keep looking back after each ten steps. If you do not see me, come back running. And, most important, do NOT listen to anything Saeed says" They left after breakfast, with Roy saying "where are they going to find Walterable animals?" Well, the joke on us, as Walter shot a grand old duggaboy, and we came back empty handed! How about that? Walter could not stop talking at the dinner table, he seems to be on cloud nine.

HnH: My girls say hello and they have enjoyed my telling them about Saeed's hunt. Interestingly, when I tell them about Walter's pranks and foolishness, they wonder what the heck I'm talking about because their experience with him was totally normal (Pizza and a football game on the t.v.). If they only knew! Have you tried a shock collar. Saeed and Walter: What a great buffalo. We'd love to hear the details or did he kill it by throwing an M-80 at it?

What a beautiful buffalo that Walter took, congratulations. That insect is very beautiful, though very strange looking. This looks like it is shaping up to be one of your better safaris.

Walter is certainly not a bad shooter..its just all the distractions leading up to the actual SHOOTING. Ie. Whilst stalking a nice Zebra "oh.. Saeed..what do you think..shall I am for the black or the white stripe?..have a look...meanwhile Zebra strolls away. Or.."wooow look at that big fat Waterhog resting under the tree..this will be an excellent shot". Smack in the heart of the Water LOG. But I agree, he is a good shooter, especially considering he has only half of his trigger finger left. He shot himself in the finger 7 times. Thats really talanted in my book.

He shot himself in the finger 7 times Now that is a stroy that needs to be told.

Quite an accomplishment. Saeed would be the best one to ask.

Walter had shot himself more times than we can remember, including once very close to certain parts of his anatomy! Yesterday Roy shot a kongoni, and I shot a kudu, as you can see from the photos posted above. We then spent the rest of the day waiting for a big croc to show himself. Which he did, just the tip of his noseand eyes. The rest of the afternoon we had a grand show of smaller crocs feeding on our bait, and every now and then, Fred and George would have a fight to keep us entertained. Dark came and we nt back to camp. Walter came back empty handed. Apparently there not that many Walterable animals around like that buffalo he shot on his first day. This morning we went looking for duggaboys. A few miles from camp we found the tracks of some, and followed them for a few kilometers. In the process we came across the remains of 3 elephants killed by poachers. Our truck was quite far, and were only a few kilometers from camp, so we walked back to camp, where we are right now. We are going to have lunch, then head out for the croc again.

Gents, What a wonderful post: just seems to get better every day. I look each day to see what are adventurers have accomplished and what trophies they have seen or collected. Ah, all good fun. tidbit here: a newer member and one who lurks in the background most of the time. I do wish we could see more posts like this one...keeps the members "biting their nails' till the next post. It is more than just curosity...many of us would enjoy this safari and just cannot afford the luxury of spending that many days in country. This is the "stuff' that keeps us living. Saeed and all the guys (pros too) on this hunt...thanks a million for keeping this hunter looking for more. Could you give us an idea of the weapons you are using and shot distances? Dosen't really matter but I am interested in such and I know other members are too. Thanks, tidbit Always do right: this will amaze some and astonish the rest. Mark Twain

tidbit824, Welcome to AR. We are all using 2 home built rifles, based on the Dakota 76 action. One has a Shilen barrel, and one has a Dan Lilja barrel. Both are chambered for our own wildcat, the 375/404, very similar to the Remington 375 Ultra. Bullets are home made on a CNC lathe, of copper, at 300 grains. The load is 88 grains of H4350 and Federal 215 primers. Sable: 200 yards Kudu: 100 yards Buffalo: 100 yards Buffalo: 70 yards Buffalo: 90 yards Kudu: 80 yards Waterbuck: 250 yards Waterbuck: 200 yards Waterbuck: 250, 300 and 400 yards. First shot dropped him, then he got up and ran off. Second hit him in the rear end, he continued running, third shot dropped him. Kongoni: 120 yards Hippo: 15 yards Lion: 60 yards

I am amazed the toughness of waterbuck. The post reminds me of the waterbuck I shot in Zim. Smacked him right in the shoulder with .375 barnes TSX. He ran 300 plus yards. When we tracked him down...blood spore all the way...he was still alive with 2 broken shoulders still upright on his hindlegs! I finished him with a neck shot...just a hardy---tough animal. The meat was very good. Saeed....I am amazed you were able to get 2 additional shots into your waterbuck. The 400 yard shot was incredible! congrats! dale

Saeed & Group, Greetings from the states: tidbit here. I too use a .375 for most of my hunting. Mine was built in about 1960 on an old Enfield action (that is one that cocks on closing--- a bit awkward at first). A good rifle and reliable. Just wondering how long we can look forward to receiving these outstanding photos and glimpses into your safari? thanks for the reply...now, back to lurking, tidbit Always do right: this will amaze some and astonish the rest. I'm sorry to belabor the point - but how in the world does one shoot onself in one's trigger finger? Or does Walter have 4000fps reaction time that enables him to pull the trigger and move his finger over the barrel before the bullet exits? SCI Life Member DSC Life Member

We spent all morning following buffalo, mostly through a very thick forest. After a few miles, we decided to give up the chase. The GPS said we were less than 2.5 Ks from our camp, so we sent the trackers back to the truck, and we decided to walk back to camp for lunch. Trouble was that we had high ridge directly between us and the camp. It was either climb that, or make a very long detour. We went the direct route, and arrived at the camp 5 minutes before our truck! In the forest we found the remains of 3 elephants killed by poachers. In the afternoon we went to have a look at our croc bait. We found that our Primus hide was blown by the wind in the night, and it was lying in the river a few yards from where we put it. Our chairs remained in their place. We saw no sign our big croc. We put the hide back, and went off looking for something else. Roy chased wildebeest a few times, eventually managed to shoot one. We took it back to camp. Walter came back empty handed.

I believe he was checking the preassure in his air rifle with his trigger finger on top and using the other hand to squeeze trigger. (He forgot to check if there was something else in there.) As for incidents on other body parts, I do not wish to comment.
