All species of the Gray Ghost! Here's my first Cape Kudu. Taken in the Eastern Cape, RSA. I saw three that were 50-52 inches and one that would go a solid 55 inches. He's still alive on that ranch and I hope to find him in late May.

April 2006, Waterberg mountains. Kudu had huge body and took us two days to carry him off the mountain. Shot him at 11am got the last meat back home at 9am the next morning wish I had some money to get him stuffed. Otherwise I made a euro mount of him myself. Even my wife likes it for a change thumb

My 2005 Limpopo Valley bull, archery. He was 20 yards away from the blind and fighting with another bull when I arrowed him. If you look carefully you can see the exit hole just behind the shoulder.

I doubt I will ever beat this one, he's definitly a once in a lifetime.

Dave,

I have had several people do measurements on him, as you can guess, he does attract attention. One person measured him at 140 3/8 SCI (he's an official measurer) over a year after I killed the bull. The horns individually, with his measurements, were 59 4/8 and 61 6/8. I had field measured him at 60 inches on the long side, but I am no expert. Bases measured at just 9 5/8 and 9 4/8.

He's at the tannery (USA based) now and should be finally home sometime this year. My taxidermist is very keen to get this big guy mounted.

I have seen many large kudu bulls in the same region, they have some good genetics there.

Here is mine, not a big one but very fun to hunt. One my first day hunting them we were driving around trying to spot them and saw a group of young bulls in brush taller tham I am. All we could see were the horns moving above the brush. I have been in awe of them ever since.

Mike Jines and I took these kudu on the same afternoon in 2001 although hunting separately. Our PHs were bantering back and forth on their radios arguing which client had taken the best bull. When we arrived at camp it was determined mine (57 inch)was slightly better than Mike's (55 inch). Both good bulls. Since the then, Mike has slimmed down and I've gained weight. This is a rare opportunity to view Mike in his heavy years. Big Grin

THX! I was very pleased with his horn length for only having 2 full turns. I know I'll have to be very lucky to find a bigger one but I'll be in the right place in Sept/Oct this year to look over a lot of bulls so I might get lucky.

Your kudu is a great specimen - big enough for any hunter. And with a bow too! Superb.

An enviable collection of trophies. The bush in the last 2 pictures looks very familiar! What's the deal with the bullet hole between the horns? Is it a bullet hole? What rifle were you using? Do you like using open sights? Do you always use them? Congratulations, I know exactly why you like hunting kudu so much.

David,
Yes sir it is a bullet hole made with Pete Barnard's .416 Remington! Thank the red gods he had her loaded with solids. We drove up on this bull on the river and when the bull took off, Pete shouted at me to take him and thrust his rifle in my hands... so I did, the solid centered a 4" diameter mopane and hit the bull behind the ear and exited between the horns doing no damage other than a .416 caliber hole in the skull cap. He was on a dead run about 75 yards away and dropped like a wet sack after running into the bullet! As you might imagine, Peter and I had a good laugh about the shot. I am mounting him European style so I can remember that shot and that unlucky old bull!

My best bull to date, taken with Dirk De Bod and Pete Kibble in May 2005. This bull was taken with a 340 Weatherby Magnum with some interesting history. The rifle was given to Herb Klein (First winner of the Weatherby Award) by Roy Weatherby. Herb used to hunt with Pete's father-in-law and gave it to him as a gift many years ago (The FIL, who is a very famous PH but for the life of me I can't recall his name at the moment, would be known to all of you I'm sure.) The FIL then gave it to Pete, who still uses it on a daily basis. It shoots quite well and has a large, brass plaque in the stock with an inscription from Weatherby to Klein.

I haven't seen it myself but it's my understanding that this hunt made it on to one of the Tracks Across Africa episodes.

There are so many great trophies on this thread. Who, amongst us hunters, can resist the allure of a kudu bull? They are so majestic, in every way.

Boghossian, that is a very handsome specimen. Before I read the measurement, I would have said it was bigger than 52", deceived by depth obviously. It is a wonderful trophy - so many people (PH's and clients) get obsessed with this 60" story, forgetting that a 50" mature bull is a most worthy trophy indeed. Well done.

Tyge, that is also a super bull. What did it measure? Thanks for the gen on the rifle, must have made the hunt and trophy mean all that much more. Very interesting

Thanks, David. My Namibia bull measured just a touch over 55" on both sides. Dirk and Pete were kind enough to insist Dave Fulson and I take a trophy of our choice as a way of thanking us for our work on filming a 10 day safari they hosted for the Tracks Across Africa show. The choice of which trophy animal I wanted to hunt was easy for me as the kudu is by far my favorite plains game animal.

I, for one, cannot resist any chance to hunt a mature kudu bull.

I also like to see the specimens with some serious spread. It seems that they are generally 2 curl bulls that don't have as much length as a 2.5 curl bull. Either way, any mature kudu is a magnificent trophy and I am v pleased that they are so common in Southern Africa.

BTW can someone enlighten me on 'ivory tips'. Is that a sign of age? Of horn wear? Or is is just a feature that some animals never have?
