Recomendations on buff hunt

Hi folks,

I’m looking for recommendations on an outfitter / PH for a 2018 Cape Buffalo hunt. I’ve done one African PG hunt in RSA in 2003. It was a fantastic experience!! I’ve dreamed of getting back, but life has always seemed to get in the way. This would probably be my one and only “bucket list” DG hunt, so I can’t afford to screw it up. I’ve sent out RFQ’s to over 20 outfitters, many of whom are members here. I’m not a rich man by any means, but based on initial responses from my inquiries, I believe I can afford a mid-range, 7-day hunt (maybe I’m being naive). I doubt that I could afford to harvest additional plains game, but it would be nice to be in an area where I am able to see a number of them on a daily basis. I’ve scoured the last 3 – 4 years of AR posts, Hunting Reports and Offered Hunts for ideas and have learned quite a bit. I have a few names in my head, but I thought I’d open the topic and see what you guys might recommend and why. I’d also like to hear about folks that you would steer clear of and why. I understand that you may not want to share a negative experience in an open forum, so I welcome and encourage PM’s, if you prefer. In my search, I’d like to leave no stone unturned. My criteria –

Pricing of about $15k all in, less air travel and shipping of trophy
An honest outfitter and hardworking, trustworthy PH
I’ve done RSA, so I’d like to hunt a different country, probably Zim or Moz
Must be unfenced and free range
Traditional spot spoor and stalk
Simple, yet safe accommodations
Would probably prefer rifle rental

I know there are sometimes discounted hunts by good operators later in the season. It’s certainly one option. I’m just not sure I could make arrangements that quickly (I’m still working).

Any and all responses would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

John

My circumstance was almost exactly similar to yours. It had been 13 years since my last safari.

In Sep 2016, I booked a 10 day buff hunt with Lin Stanton in Zimbabwe. I killed a 36" buff on day 6. Everyday we got into groups of dagga boys, but I wanted a 40" buff. I passed up a 38" buff on the first day.

On day 5, we tracked a small group of bulls, all day. In that group was one 45" bull and one 41" bull. Unfortunately, I have arthritis in my left hip, and I hit a wall about 15 minutes before we got into position. Except for that I would have got my 40" or better buffalo.

Lin and crew are hardworking and honest people. They worked so hard trying to get me my 40" buff, and except for my hip they would have succeeded. I shot the 36" bull because I just couldn't take any more days of walking. If I had held out, I truly believe I would have got my 40" bull.

Check out his 2016 season in the hunting reports. There you will see me (old man with long hair in a Tilly hat) and another guy with a 45" buff Lin's people got that year.

I would recommend him highly. Below is his official contact info.

I Would Recomend the following outfits for Cape Buffalo;
Zimbabwe : C&M Safaris or Thierry Labat
Safaris.
Mozambique : Kambako Safaris, Nyati Safaris or Luambezi Safaris.
Zambia: Andrew Baldrey of Royal Kafue Safaris.
All are quality outfits and have competitive prices, top PHs and great venues for buffalo and planes game.

Thor Kirchner in Zambia is doing excellent with buffalo and is very reasonable on price. I hunted with him in 2015 with a couple friends and we all took super buffalo. He has a great camp on the Luangwa. Wendell Reich has all Thor's info on his website. If you do a search I did a report on the hunt.

This is probably one of the best deals I have seen. Good PH, good area. It is fenced but a huge area.

I've hunted buffalo in Save and Chewore with the Duckworth's and in Zambia.

One thing I would say considering your budget... avoid the xtra charter coats..
pick a place where you can do a road transfer (like the Save Valley)
This will save you $1,500-$2,000 round trip.
These two countries give you great "traditional" Buffalo hunts at a great overall value.
All the above recommendations are great options. Like Mike pointed out above with Thierry Labat in the Save...the Save valley would be HARD to beat for quality and value

For a single lifetime trip to hunt DG...the Bubye Valley Conservancy would be hard to beat. It is likely you will see all of the Big 5 (maybe not a leopard...but possibly) while hunting buff and it will be an experience like no other place on earth.

To make that experience happen in traditional old style fashion with a true Rhodesian gentleman. I would highly recommend Nigel Theisen as a PH.

You are in luck because there are a LOT of good buffalo hunts. Something you may want to consider is doing a non-trophy buffalo hunt. I second what LEDVM says about the BVC, they have a non-trophy hunt for just under what you are looking at. Check with the Duckworths at Mokore Safaris. They hunt the Sengwa Research area and I think they have a non-trophy buffalo. Either place, you would have a fantastic time and experience. I feel the excitement for you.

Do yourself a favor and PM Ledvm..the BVC would make for a great buffalo destination. If that's not a good fit, I would recommend Zambia with Thor, Fairgame or Muchinga Adventures LTD

Also PM Mark Young...he represents some of the best Zambia has to offer. The hunt he posted in the Save would also be just the ticket...

I know you said you have been to SA......... I have done a couple of Zimbabwe hunts myself and know I hunt with Johan Hermann in south Africa.....

You could be all in for a true free range Greater Kruger buffalo hunt for around $15,000. No charters, none of the govt or concession fees, all in all done. I have personally taken four bulls hunting with Johan, two where exceptional.

If you'd like to save a lot of money, don't bring any trophies home.

You'll save the dip & pack fees, and the exorbitant freight charges.

With that money, you could pay for airfare or add another animal or two.

With Cape buffalo it's the hunt, not the horns, that is the trophy.

Look no further, add some extra plains game days, and your good to go. Only have one trip under my belt but for $550 a day this has to be the best deal in Africa for the amount of plains game you can hunt while dodging the Big 5.

Someday I will get around to posting another glowing report from the Save, my brother and I killed 19 great animals on an 11 day hunt last September on Mokore and met a couple of other very happy hunter's in camp while we where there.

Give Nathan Askew at Bullet Safaris a call or email. If your going to SCI he will be there. Nathan operates in several Tanzania Concessions as well as elsewhere.
All of the PH's and outfitters previously mentioned on this thread enjoy excellent reputations.

John. I ve been to BVC twice for buffalo with Brent Hein and had a great time. Mostly track and shoot but also spot and stalk. Super if you bring kids for some PG. I took a 47 " buff this year on the Waterberg plateau in Namibia but very expensive. Limpopo in SA can be reasonable (going there this year) but greater Kruger are typically very expensive. Mozamique is largely spot and stalk on the delta. The cost of trophies is getting very expensive and I probably won't bring another back. Good luck and bring enough gun!

Yes they can be stupid expensive.....but 15k all in ends up being much cheaper than a 11k Zimbabwe hunt once all the misc is added in.

And all the big 5 are there, and you will see more plainsgame than all the Zimbabwe places except for bubye and maybe the save.

The greater Kruger hunts are exceptional imho.
