OK,

Every year, like clockwork, somebody puts up a thread about what you bought or booked at DSC & SCI.

I thought it might be an interesting exercise to compare what you are planning to buy vs. what you actually purchase.

So, lets see some wish lists.

Mine, I'm not even going, so carry on without.

Elephant in 2017, not sure where yet. If not elephant in 2017, then maybe Zambia for Buffalo and Sable.

Fishing Trip in 2017 to either Panama or Costa Rica for billfish/rooster fish combo.

Maybe fishing to Brazil in 2017 for me and my son. But I have no idea where/when to go.

Leopard for my son in 2018 (Graduation Trip).

I'm excited about the shows. It is always fun to people from AR and also folks we have previously hunted with in Africa.

If you go to Costa Rica, I would stay away from Crocodile Bay. I think the longliners have damaged the fishery there. Went in November, which is supposedly "the best" and had terrible fishing. (for the second time)

Speak with Paul Reiss at Acute Angling for Brazilian fishing trips. He's got it dialed. It's the guy I do my river trip with every year. He has other trips that are as interesting as well.

My son has been pestering me about going fishing in South America for a couple years now. Last year, we talked to Acute Angling briefly about Peacock Bass, but they said December and January were their best times. Since my wife will NEVER let my son go fishing over Christmas, I quickly said thanks but no thanks.

My son is a junior in high school, and has been doing a little internet research. He says there is good fishing down further south in Brazil during the summer months for mixed-bad trips. I really don't know anything about fishing in Brazil, but plan to ask more about it at the shows.

I've gone as early as late October and as late as January 20th (I think). This year I'm going November 2 and again on January 18th.

Also, please be very careful on booking with anyone whom fishes far southern Brazil. Those waters are part of the Brazil Shield drainage, not the Guyana Shield drainage. The waters are completely different, the available species are completely different.

Also, to be considered, The Peacock's size varies greatly based on the waters you book. The trip I normally do, the variety species trip (which a bunch of AR guys are doing in November) has a different species that only achieve about 12-13 pounds. The Rio Negro watershed trips, which are normally started out of Manaus, then a flight to Barcellos has the Cichla Temensis or Giant Peacocks. They get to 24 even 25 pounds.

The accommodations: Acute's "Blackwater Explorer" is a traditional Brazilian Banana Boat. It is designed as a shallow draft boat which can navigate very shallow rivers. If you've looked at Captain Peacock's boat, it's a yacht. Its nice but he is very limited to where he can travel, based on the yacht's draft.

High water, no or very few fish. The Peacocks go off into the flooded jungle to hunt. Low water, 25-50 fish per angler per day. Catches of 110 or more fish per boat are not unheard of. The Blackwater will move the trip to find low water rivers...Period.

just a bunch of info. to consider. If you want to PM me, I would be happy to provide more details.

Buying either N.A. Elk hunt or Europe hunt for 2017. Most likely Europe 2017 and Elk 2018. Africa is 2019. I have a Buffalo and Sable calling my name, they both just need to get bigger (43 Rowland Ward, minimum) and hopefully no one shoots them before I get there.

I will be in dsc for 2 days - Thursday and Friday.

Nothing to buy - will look at blaser rifles. Will look at scopes. I think that is the extent of my shopping.

I plan to hunt with Mule Mike in Texas in 2017 nothing is fixed up. Will talk to the tholo and save safari guys but I have kind of lost interest in hunting Africa.

Will try and see if there is anyone offering hunts in Kansas.

Talk to acute angling about an Amazon trip but I am trying to find a buddy/boat mate who will have the same fishing desires/ideology as me - catch catfish and payara and not waste time on peacock bass.

Talk to Tropic a Star and see what packages they offer.

Talk to Mexico fish company and see some tuna charters. Anyone interested in tuna fishing of Venice, La ?

Talk to some Texas real estate ranch guys.

Overall lots of plans to talk and get info but knowing me I will be hanging out near the admiral and his whiskey box.

Booked for '17 so touching base with outfits we will be hunting with this year. Bwanajay and I will wander over to the UWS booth and catch up on the latest in Uganda. Mjines and I will do the same with Mayo Oldiri for our April trip and several of us will be checking in with Shikar Safaris for an October ibex hunt.

Of course, check on a bunch of old friends and make a few new ones! Always a good time.

May kick tires on an Australian buffalo hunt for '18...

Hopefully will buy a Blaser!!!!

Second - looking for a Dall hunt.

Third - meeting up with PH's to confirm hunts already booked.

Fourth and the best - Meet with Peter Flack on his new books, then get the SHAC off the ground! If you do not know what SHAC is, go to his website and see him in Dallas.....

Fifth - not critical, going to the Kenetrek booth to see if there are discounts on boots. I flinch at $475 per pair!!!!

Sixth and important - Headed to Safari Press booth to meet Robert Anderson!!!!

Hi Jerry. Yes, it was a huge disappointment. We hit the Roosters pretty good but ALL the captains warned that a trip offshore would produce nothing but a low fuel tank and many empty beer bottles.

We decided the last day to give it a shot. We drug the gear for 8 hours and only had 3 sails raise but wouldn't take the blues or goggle eyes. I don't know if they get gear wise but they sure weren't interested in what we had. There were lots of suspicious looking small boats out there 30 miles out.

The place has changed, "Vibe" wise. They are building a huge Hilton hotel there and are busy entertaining investors. The feel of the place is gone. Flori, Maria and Jenny are still there and still great but it's time to find a new playground.

They even started to charge for laundry.

Dogcat,

I received the Spiral Horn series and the Icon's book for Christmas from myself. Great books.

Try on some Kenetrek's, I love mine, wore the safari's for my first trip to Africa

Not going to make it to the DSC but am going to Vegas instead.

Have fun everyone

If you decide to try them I would recommend purchasing them from someone with an excellent return policy. They have a bit of a bad reputation for heel blisters for some people. I tried a pair and could not get used to them. I called Kennetrek and asked them about it and they said it takes 30 miles in them to get them broken in. I put on over 50 and I got a blister every single time I wore them. (Some people's feet are just shaped differently I suppose. Various hunting forums have threads about this problem.)
Scheel's gave me a full refund.
I have since greatly increased my spending at Scheel's. Great customer service.

Not going to attend. Our bear hunts are fully booked for 2017 and getting close for 2018. We do not do shows any more and quite frankly they are generally an overdose of humanity for my wife and I.

I prefer to do my own home work/due diligence when planning a hunt and would not likely book at a convention anyways. Going to Hungary for red deer and wild boar in late September 2017 after we finish our fall bear hunts. Found the operator and booked the hunt via word of mouth and vetting them myself.

Honestly, if I wasted the coin it would cost for my wife and I to go to DSC, I probably wouldn't have enough disposable income left to go on a hunt. And it ain't a holiday....... a holiday for us is going somewhere where there are even less people than where we live. Wink

If we ever go to another convention it will likely be SCI when it returns to Reno.

Man do I ever agree with that.

The last time I went was 2013, I think. I had two mounts in the show.

I also "tried" to talk to the outfitters who sell Stone Sheep / Mt. Goat hunts. The problem with the shows AS I SEE IT, is the outfitters are so busy talking to and visiting with past clients, they have precious little time to spend with new or prospective clients.

I finally gave up and went along my way, without booking a hunt (I still want to do it)

I am now planning on driving over to Las Vegas for just a day. We are building a log cabin and my wife has requested two "nice" antler chandeliers. I know there are always several vendors there with them.

Perhaps Mr. Jines can buy me a beer?

I hear you Steve. I rarely book at the show. I get ideas and let John handle it afterwards.

I could be talked into a Stone sheep hunt in 2018. Maybe even in 2017.

I would be interested in 2018. I have lots of stuff going next year already. I need to go do those two while I still have lungs and legs.

Just talked to my wife, now it looks like were both going, for two days now.

I've never booked a hunt at the shows, but I've booked quite a few hunts right after the shows. It is way easier to chat with outfitters on Wednesday and Thursday. The weekend gets really crowded. I'm taking my son who is still in high school. So we will not arrive in Dallas until Friday night.

Hope to firm up dates on Masailand next year at DSC. Also plan on a pair of Courtney's for my wife, who will accompany me for the first time.

Looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones. And giving Biebs a hard time at the Blazer booth.

Plus one...And Kenetrek could give two craps about it either. I am completely done with this company.

Staying home this year.

Zim in July for Ele

Tajikistan in 2018

Alabama National Championship 1/9

I am generally swamped at the first of the year and the shows just provide me more of what I thought I could never live without...

So this year staying put.

What activity are you competing in for the Alabama National Championship?

Damn Jeff, I was going to make it my personal mission to see if I could keep your thirst fully quenched for the show. Your presence and company will be missed.

Taking my Pop to the game Monday night. Hopefully we will prevail over Clemson again.

Tropic star big name in panama. I fished quepos in costa rica for two days in feb a few years back. Landed several sails daily. Best i have ever done is sea of cortez, in aug when water warms up. Landed ton of sails had blues and blacks in sets just could not hook up. Ton of yellowfin up to 100# plus. Roooster fiah everywhere, dorado, grouper...... fished with van wormere resorts. Price was great. Boats were ok, not fancy, but soild mechanically. Best fishing trip i have ever had
Punta cana domnican republic is a hot spot for blues in july and aug

Me too. Darwin Cary at Scoop Lake Outfitters runs a good outfit... I am scheming to do it again...

Booked for ele in 2017 already.

Just there to support friends, drink beer, and be merry.

Never book at shows.
