I've got 50,000 US to spend. Air fare is covered and I'll worry about taxidermy later. I've already got decent examples of Eland, Kudu, Blue Wildebeast, Red Hartebeast, Gemsbok, Mountain Zebra, and Springbok. Where and what should I hunt in Africa? I can probably do three weeks. This is not just an academic exercise.

Sounds like you're headed to Tanzania! Or Zambia....

Or Zimbabwe for elephant and buffalo.

Or Cameroon/CAR for LDE or Bongo.

I guess the question is: what animals interest you?

Many of us would love to have your conundrum.

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

I'd probably split it up a little.

Cape buffalo/leopard/sable wherever the gettin's good.

Then another adventure in New Zealand for red stag, tahr, and chamois.

If there was money leftover, I'd head over to Australia and shoot water buffalo and pigs. Maybe throw in some feral camels or donkeys for variety.

50g's will not do a full bag in TZ--more like 75 to 90 would pull that off.

I'd do 14 days in Zambia--then find a good deal on a elephant in Zim.. that sould eat that 50K up.

It does depend on what you want. If you don't want Elephant or Lion, it would be a waste to hunt them.

You tell me, what do YOU want? Then Mark, Aaron and I will inundate on you will offers. Big Grin

Or you could try and top up your budget a bit and book the Zambezi hunters 21 day classic lion/leopard/buffalo/plainsgame. Their lions are very expensive but one can easily see why.

Cheers and good luck with your quest.

Wow, you get such great information here!

I am actually pretty open but my wish list sort of runs in this very loose order Buffalo, Leopard, Sable, Lion, Elephant, Bongo, Lord Darby's Eland, Nyala and I'd like to collect all of the Wildebeasts. I know I can't do all that in one place so choices will have to be made. I'm just trying to figure out where I have the potential for hunting as much of the list as I can for that amount of money. I'm certainly very open to hunting animals that are not on this list though I'm not much in to Crocs or Hippos. It's not necessarily my last hurrah either so that has to be factored in. I suspect west Africa would have to be another trip.

For all you outfitters I'll just warn you that it takes me a long time to make up my mind on this kind of thing. I'm a process driven guy so I have to cross all the Ts and dot the Is. I discussed this with the Boss last night and I am just starting.

You've obviously been to Namibia for PG. My advice would be to make a dangerous game hunt. Your budget would accomodate an elephant and buffalo hunt in Zim. You could also do a 2x buffalo hunt in Massailand. Forget the lion unless you find a cancellation or a deeply discounted hunt.

I am not an operator or an agent, but I am a patient man and a patriot whose main objective on this site is to promote ethical Zimbabwean hunting operators who deliver quality. I have plenty of time to talk with you about your next hunt, and when you have decided exactly what you want to hunt, will point you in the right direction. Zambezi Hunters can do buffalo, leopard, sable (in short supply), lion (also in short supply) and a heap of plainsgame, but unfortunately not bongo.

I would say look for a cancelled hunt for a lion. You may not get the chance a couple of years from now. With everything I read on this site and others Lion hunting is doomed...
if you find one ask the guys here about the location and outfitter, ph you will get some good information. You can get your Buff on this hunt as well.

A trophy bull in Botswana. If you can leave in a week, a cancellation hunt with Johan Calitz Safaris in their premier concession.

If you think you might ever want to try for the Big 5, then you should make Lion your priority animal NOW. They are only going to get substantially more expensive and one day you may not be allowed to hunt them. Buff, Leopard, and Elephant will always be available.

I would look first to Zambia as you could hunt the Luangwa Valley and then fly up to the Okavengo swamps and then down to the Kafue Flats. They have the Lechwes (Kafue & Black) and Sitatunga. Check with Andrew; he posts here as fairgame.

10 years ago you could have done a full bag safari in Tanzania and collected four of the Big 5 and a variety of PG for your $50k, but those days are long gone. Mores the pity. CRYBABY

I had the exact same dilemma the other day but it was more like $5.00 and where to get lunch?

I think Lord Derby eland or elephant would get my vote. Lots of great choices though!

Don't forget to save some for that taxidermy!

Best Bang for Your Buck - based on what you've written would be a buffalo - leopard hunt in Zim. You'll shoot plenty of bait animals as well as your target animals. You should have enough left over for the New Zealand hunt.
Those really are the best bang for you buck hunts, plus it sounds like it follows your priority list to some degree.

Elephant in Zim
Hill Stag in Scotland
Buffalo in Oz
Moose in Western Canada

If you shopped around, you could definitely do all four for $50K. Variety is the very definition of "bang for the buck" in my opinion.

If you want all the wildebeest's then you will need to hunt one of the prime Luangwa blocks for Cookson's.
