None of mine can afford Africa.

I've hunted Canada, Africa and Alaska.
The Alaska trip I did hunt with a friend and I found that I didn't like it. Whined and complained too much.

I prefer me, myself and I.

I usually hunt with a long time friend. When I went to Zambia in October 2011, he was unable to go. I went by myself and had a great time.

Both ways have their pluses and minuses, I enjoy both.

I have been to Africa seven times. Four of those trips were with friends. Those are special hunts to be able to share the experience with others. Time around the campfire at night with a cigar and an adult beverage sharing stories and reliving the experiences of the day is about as good as it gets in my book.

Have hunted with hunting and non-hunting friends (observers in the jargon of the business). Usually meet with French friends at the game farm in Namibia but we generally hunt separately, going out together with one of the hunting guides if circumstances require.

Non-hunting friends who could afford the airfare for selves and wives enjoyed the trip which, of course, included much more than just 10 days at the game farm. Both men are photographers of note and "shot" away to their heart's content, with their wives agreeing it was a great vacation.

I don't enjoy going on hunts alone and I'm extremely lucky b/c my wife is a great hunter and we always travel together. She's taken moose, elk, hogs/gators, African plainsgame. We leave soon forNewfoundland (moose) and she's hoping for a Kudu next July in Zim...

Been to Africa 5 times, twice by myself. I don't think my wife will go again. Wish I had a friend. I must be hard to get along with or something.
Got one that I bowhunt here with but none of my friends can afford Africa either.

Most of my friends can't afford it either. But in 07, 2 of my friends and I went to Russia for a bear hunt. The 2 of them knew and liked each other as well. While there, they got into an issue and refused to speak to one another. Actually came right down to a fist fight until the outfitter and I stepped in. They spent the rest of the trip trying to get me to take sides. Miserable.

Later that same year, I did a guided hunt with each of them individually. One of them to RSA with our sons. He bitched and complained to the point that the PH suddenly came down with Malaria and sent the tracker out with him for the final 3 days. He shot a Gold Medal Waterbuck of which I've yet to see its equal. He complained that he didn't know that animal wasn't on his package list and wanted the price adjusted. What an embarrassment.

Later went on an Elk hunt with the other guy in a unit of Colorado that took us 10 years to accumulate enough preference points for a tag. I got my Elk on day 4 and he got skunked. I felt bad for the guy as he mistakenly shot a smaller bear on the previous hunt while I got a really good one. Just the way the luck ran but I doubt we will hunt together again.

I've taken my wife or sons several times. She doesn't hunt but the boys do. Although this is the much more expensive option, I get to enjoy the hunt with someone I really like. Also, I suppose it's because I'm paying the bill, but if I shoot a real trophy and they get skunked, I don't feel guilty. If they shoot a real trophy and I get skunked, well I'm about as happy as a father can be. If an unsavory attitude develops in camp, which it never has, I have the ability and right to straighten it out to my satisfaction. If they can't go, I guess I'll go it alone.

I do have an invitation to go on a group hunt with a well known hunter who posts here from time to time. I plan to go and hope that once and for all, I'll find some friends with the experience and means to hunt without sweating everything little thing that inevitably goes astray.

Took my fiance on my first safari, and bought her a 5 day hunt where she took kudi, impala and sable. She passed that test, so we were married 27 years. She went along on my 2nd safari, and we took along a good friend of mine, and we had a grand time. That friend went on to more hunts in Zim, but also in South Africa and Tanzania before giving up hunting due to being in his 80s. My 3rd safari was alone, and while it was great hunting, I do enjoy having a freind or two along to enjoy camplife with, even though we hunt seperately during the day. My last safari was combined with a family vacation, and we had a fantastic time. Now, I expect that I'll have my son along with me on more future hunts than not. He's 24, and we've enjoyed many great hunts together across the western states, and South Africa. As long as finances allow for us to do it, I would never go without him.

I consider myself lucky that I have a twin brother who also likes hunt and can afford to go to the same places. We always hunt together and have a great time.
My son and his son get along very well and they also like hunting. We grew up hunting and fishing with our Dad and we try to do the same with our sons.

Ide,

Sadie and I have had mixed experiences with friends on safari. I can tell you one thing and that is that if your friend has a habit that you find irritating it might very well drive you bat shit after 3 weeks.

Properly selected, going with a mate adds greatly to the experience. In 2009, a friend and I shared a multiple tuskless hunt. Being with a friend on his ele hunt was a great experience. We still relive the experience when we see each other. We are going back together in 2013.
Keep in mind that Joe is a great sportsman, a wonderful traveling companion, and a friend of many years. We get each other pretty wound up in the months before departure.

I've done both. My wife has been on 5 safaris with me and a good friend of mine has been on 3 others with me. My friend and I get along quite well, and we had a great time together in the Zambezi Valley hunting dangerous game this year. We always have separate PHs but share camp, and it's great to come back to camp and share experiences with each other, as well as the travel time to and from Africa. I went alone on one other safari and was happy, but I enjoy having company on safari.

I've hunted Africa with friends, but my decided preference is to hunt DG 1x1 with my PH which pretty much reduces "hunting" with a friend to just travelling with the friend. So, I almost always go alone.

Of course, the PH's I hunt with are also long-time friends, so................

My hunting buddy of 30 years has gone with me on hunts in the lower US, Canada a number of times, and once to Africa. We've hunted 1x1 and 2x1. Every time was great despite various problems, i.e. weather, no game, only one animal being shot, etc. We looked at the problems as part of hunting. Oh, we're hunting mule deer this year, and may go back to Africa next year!

Have a couple that I regularly trade emails with. Funny to read in to their writing the blasphemies and cursing. LOL I tell them all to piss off and come here to TX for a little get away.

Tell them I'll put them on one of those mechanical bucking bulls just to see how long they'd last. They all think Texans were raised on those. LOL

I have a few friends I really like going hunting with. No bitching and we really enjoy hunting together without any jealousy because one is more successful than the other.
The only problem is that non of them are interested to hunt in Africa....
But I still have not given up to persuade one of my friends and my father to go with me next yearSmiler

If that doesn't work, then I guess I will go to Africa alone againSmiler

This question does not really just pertain to Africa in my opinion. I will and do enjoy hunting waterfowl and doves with friends, and deer hunting with my wife, to a point. When it comes to going on a guided big game hunt, I go by myself. If I am guiding someone for deer/feral hogs/javelina that is one thing, I am hunting for someone and trying to help them connect. In a hunting camp where I am the client I really don't want to have to deal with another persons idiosyncracies or have them try to deal with mine.

I agree on the bird hunting. Always more fun as a group. Dove and quail won't be given away. But anyone that wants my duck or geese can have them.

It has worked for me here, in Canada, and in Africa.

I started hunting on my own at the age of six years (1942)and I was the only boy on my grandfather’s ranch in the North end of the Texas hill country, So, because of that start I’ve basically hunted by myself for most of my life! In North America I’ve hunted even very wild country totally alone, but In Alaska we all ways hunt in pairs, even though the camp may have six or eight guys! This is for safety purposes and shared work on very large game, for both processing and for packing to our camp!

In Africa I have only hunted twice with a friend, and in both cases it was with a friend who only hunts elephant these days, cares nothing for anything else! He had a deal with his safari company to let me take the buffalo on his license. On those two hunts I took four buffalo and fired two shots into the heart/lung area of one of my friends elephants by previous request as it turned to escape a botched brain shot, because we were very close to the boundary of a of a park. The only two shots I have ever taken on an elephant by the way! However, those shots were not needed because my friend’s second shot from a quartering away to the brain dropped the bull. Those two safaris worked very well, but all other hunts in Africa, and South America have been one on one!

Bill can tell you that even today we gather, 20 or so, friends down at the 4K Ranch in Texas right after the DSC show for our DRSS get-together/wild boar hunt that is a lot of fun with friends, but we hunt separately in most cases. This is a 96 thousand acre working cattle ranch with all but 2000 acres being low cattle fence where we hunt. Good meals and having fun shoots with our double rifles between hunts! Only one time did we have a problem on this large group hunt and that was fixed before the next hunt there.

Taken in two hunts in one day by DRSS hunters after the DSC show in 2007!

The only thing I regret about hunting 99% of my life alone is I have seen and done some things that I wish had been shared with others, some that would seem unbelievable to others in the telling, so will go untold and lost forever with my passing!

So I guess what I’m trying to say is, both ways are good, but unverified happenings die with the person who experiences them, when experienced alone, and that is a loss.

I took a friend who would couldn't afford Africa now. I used the dollars I would have spent on a dangerous game hunt and used them for a reasonable plains game hunt. I spent the same amount of dollars, but gave a friend a hunt I don't think he'll ever forget. We both had a great time. It was worth it.

I used to hunt with a few friends in SoCal, but after a couple questionable hunts I had to let it go.

I do a bit of bird hunting with my wife and dogs, hunt deer in Texas with a few very high quality retired military gentlemen with unquestionably high ethics.

No kids, no nephews to bring along and not too many hunters in SoCal to begin with. Overall I'm largely solo in my hunting dreams.

What you said is so true about sharing the experience. Been married 37 years to my best friend and my fist trip to Africa in 2010 would have been far less of a joy without sharing the experience with Joyce. Watching her reaction to the Bushbuck charge made the trip. Big Grin

Legistine actu quod scripsi?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

That speaks louder than anything anyone else has said, and is something all of us that hunt and fish have to be aware of.

Yes, I enoy setting in a deer stand with folks and hearing their stories, but when all is said and done, and I do have some really great friends, when it comes to shooting deer and such I would rather be the guide, watching the person doing the shooting, or be by myself and it just be a moment in time between me and the animal and God.

If you don't mind Mac, I think I will share this with my best friend and elk hunting buddy. I've been trying to convince him to come to Africa with me.

By the way, you're mentioning of the North end of the Texas hill country makes me want to ask if you're in or near Coryell County? I killed my first whitetail somewhere there.

In nearly 5 decades of hunting it's always been with my best friend - my father, I've never hunted without him.

My wife of 25 years won't go hunting but my daughter wants to and later my son will.
