Very true.
I would call one particular PH a good mate and have enjoyed hunting with him on about six Safaris plus a quick but enjoyable rabbit hunt here in Aus.

If you don't mind Mac, I think I will share this with my best friend and elk hunting buddy. I've been trying to convince him to come to Africa with me.

By the way, you're mentioning of the North end of the Texas hill country makes me want to ask if you're in or near Coryell County? I killed my first whitetail somewhere there.

7MMNut you certainly may use anything I write in an open forum if you think it will help you and your friend!

On the county where I was born in a log home on my maternal egrandfather's ranch built by my great grandfather in the late 1800s in the South East corner of Coleman county close to the Colorado river, and My father's family ranch was in McCulloch county Near the town of Melton!

Sadly my hunting friends since school are no longer with us.

The last ten years I have hunted alone.

Saeed,

Well...I am divorced...perhaps it was a moment of weakness for her...LoL

Legistine actu? Quid scripsi?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

My hunting buddy here has the money to hunt Africa..and says he wants to....but for some reason...won't.

My wife goes with me, and I really enjoy it. She killed her first animal in Africa and has become quite the Huntress since.

I don't think I am allowed to go without her in the future.

I am a little surprised that some cannot find a candidate when they are looking for a 2nd hunter for an African hunt. I've been able to attend the DSC in Dallas twice and I can think of half a dozen people I would be happy to share a camp with, or do a 2X1. Now, maybe I only saw their best side, but I like to think I'm a good judge of character and there are some 100% good people here, with the added advantage that almost all of them have already hunted Africa, know what they're doing, know how to roll with the punches, aren't whiners or complainers and are true gentlemen. That's already alot.

The roots run deep! Looks like you're a bit west of where I killed a little basket rack whitetail some 20 years ago.

Ever find yourself in San Saba? A former pastor of mine lives there.

I am going on my first safari with two friends who have been there before. I definitely am looking forward to the experience. When hunting at home it is hard to find someone who has the same passion and drive. I either hunt alone or find myself adapting to the limitations of my hunting partners.

I bought a PG hunt at the local SCI auction almost 3 years ago. It included daily rates for four hunters 10 days, but no trophy fees. I'm still looking for takers and luckily the outfitter has extended the offer, but I am sure it will end soon.

My friends that can afford it dont hunt. Others would like to go but are too busy or cant afford it.

I paid for my brother to go with me once - it was so-so. I think it was a waste of money because he really didn't get in to it at all. Took my wife once and she was ok, but cut our trip short.

Took my son twice to Africa and once to New Zealand. On all trips he got tired and sick. We cut off a trip to the South Island for tar & chamois because he was worn out.

I think I have paid $40k in tickets and hunt cost for others, which could have been spent better.

So no- I don't hunt with friends, though I would like to....the times I have talked people in to going were a bust because they really weren't in to it and frankly didn't appreciate it.

I am happy to hunt alone, or just with a guide/tracker. However one of life's pleasures is observing your close mate/hunting buddy taking a sought after animal. A good mate nearly gets more out of your kill than you , the hunter, do sometimes.

Or so my regular hunting mate & I find. Shared experiences are remembered easily I think.

It is like this in many ways for me too.
I have still not been hunting together with someone as passionate and crazy about hunting as I am.

Being an only child I find a certain comfort in being by myself. Don't bother myself with worrying about what someone else is doing and just focus on me, myself and I.....damn I'm a selfish SOB!!

My first and only trip to Africa was booked by my wife as a surprise only to find out a few days later she was pregnant with our second so I went solo. Had a great time and the only regret I have is that she couldn't share the experience with me.

Just this past weekend she killed her first deer and judging by her response to that experience I don't think I'll be alone on too many more of my hunts! Anybody else and I don't think I'd enjoy it as much, but as someone already posted, my immediate family is altogether different.

I have always hunted with my wife of 20 years. It has been a real eye opener for her traveling to Africa since before we met me she had never been out of Texas. Now I can't plan any hunt that does not include her.

This coming year's hunt we are planning to take our two sons to Africa for the first time. I figure after that my financial pain will increase tremendously.

Ive gone across the pond with friends and I have gone alone. Always enjoyed my safaris and meeting new friends if I shared a camp with any.
I have a Moz safari planned next year with a close friend of mine that has shared many fires with me and is a seasoned true hunter. I am taking my 13 year old son on his first safari in 2013 and, in my opinion as far as hunting goes, there is nothing better than your first hunting trip to Africa except your first hunting trip with your son or daughter.

Jay, "seasoned" is right. He is well seasoned. Glad he is now traveling with friends to help him get around at his age.

Don't let him kid you Saeed! Mike is a good guy to have in camp and I just hope that he can tolerate me when we go after hogs this year.

I deer/duck/dove hunt with friends and enjoy doing so. I get as much enjoyment, if not more, out of others success as I do my own. However I would never go on a big hunting trip, like a safari or elk hunt without my father. He travelled alot for work during the first 20yrs of my life so we didnt get to spend much time hunting and fishing together. Now that he is retired we try and do a nice hunting trip every few years. I like to think we are making up for lost time!!

My first hunt in Namibia I did alone, even the P.H. stayed elsewhere.
It was horrible after dinner I was left alone on the trip of a lifetime. Nobody to talk to about the days adventures. That were very good.
Pictures don't do it.

Two years ago I took my one and only hunt trip to RSA w/ a friend and his wife. They're great people and we had a great time. Once our PH's felt us out and determined that we were just regular folks, we 'added' two more friends to our hunt.

Now every time we get together the conversation always goes back to our hunt. Now we're planning our next hunt, this time to the Eastern Cape, for next June timeframe.
