Jim,

Glad you have enjoyed our safari.

I have an idea to make it even more enjoyable this year.

At least for those who enjoy being on safari.

My plan is to include more footage of the preparation of the animals, both in the field and in the butchery.

I am sure there are many hunters who enjoy participating in all aspect of the hunt. Not just chasing and shooting animals.

Frankly, I enjoy these DVDs so much that I spread them out over many days and weeks so they will last.

Agreed, they capture the hunting experience in Africa so well. One has a heightened alertness from never knowing what is going to happen next –– so I end up concentrating so much that they wear me out!

One thing that impresses me is that Saeed knows when to take a shot and it usually seems to be a one-shot kill. These are good teaching tools.

Saeed,

Thank you for the DVD set. I received the DVDs packed in the box yesterday. I viewed the first DVD last night and enjoyed it very much. I plan to view one each night to spread out the enjoyment. After that I will down load 2 or 3 DVDs into my iPad via my computer to enjoy while traveling on those long airplane rides.

Thanks again,

Al J.

All of us were using two rifles we have built ourselves.

Both are built on the Dakota 76 action, and chambered for our own 375/404.

Bullets used are also our own design and make. They are made from copper rod on a CNC machine.

Saeed, I've been thinking. How about a theme song for Walter?
When "Ol' One Shot" begins his half of the hunting you can intro with a theme song.
Your daughter can make a hat and pick the song.

One suitable theme song for Walter's appearances: Toto's "Africa" that big hit from the 1980's.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWfY9GRe7SI

He is afterall, Saeed's "Professional Toto" in Africa. Sort of like Capstick.
Our hero! Wink

Walter's totem animal, the bateleur, flying overhead is the only juju that has allowed Walter to survive so much mischief, whether self induced or perpetrated by the rest of the crew.

Must get a few zoom-ins on a bateleur flying high in the sky over Walter's head, his good luck. tu2

And that great bateleur photo by Saeed:

What? Toto too cliched?

Well here is my favorite music ever: Enya's "Carribean Blue."

Face of Enya:

Lyrics:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7H6ce85GaYg

This is more in fitting with a video appearance by Walter.
Gentle and sweet.
Saeed edits the footage to make it look like Walter actually killed the critter, even if Alan has to chase it down and kill it with his pocket knife.

I first encountered "Carribean Blue" about 1992 on an episode of the TV show "Northern Exposure" when Jesse the Bear (Alaskan Grizzly) died, his bones were found and a funereal ceremony was enacted in the bush.
I did not know who Enya was, but ever since, hearing this makes me think of conjugal relations with my wife of near 38 years.
It is as good as Viagra.
Screw the idea of "Walter Theme Music!"

Nope, must have it! However I'm more inclined toward the showdown music from "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly"

Cue the music!

Picture it; Walterhog faces down his nemesis, the formidible, mighty and legendary beast, The Warthog!

In act of generosity, Saeed has allowed the R93 to accompany Ol' One Shot. Even leaving the ammo unmolested.
Walterhog lines up on the ferocious beast, as it begins it's charge. Each locked in on one anothers vitals.

The final scene shall have to be finished on camera.

I think it'll work.

Thank you.

Rifles and ammo are ready.

I am just organizing the photo and video departments right now.

We should have plenty of photos to show you in my Live Report I hope.

Roy and Rene are flying here a few days before our trip, and they will head over there to be ahead of us.

Alan should be there organizing the camp, ready for Walter!

Walter has sent him photos of some photo safari camps in Kenya, where one gets a villa with its own swimming pool, and one gets served drinks by the pool by pretty girls.

Apparently he wants the camp set up in a similar manner!

Best,

Ron my friend,

WE have had a bit of a very busy time this year.

Too many people coming to shoot, too many high powered air rifles to sort out for others, and mostly too much travel.

Our workshop has never been in any sort of a tidy state - as you remember yourself.

And right now it is in that proverbial state the English like to call "upside down".

About a month ago I came back from over seas, and decide I better make the ammo for the safari, because I was flying off a few days later.

I was planning to use the Hornady dies you kindly sent me.

I could not find them.

So I went back to my old Redding set, and loaded the ammo.

I went away for 3 weeks, and came back a week ago, and made an attempt to sort this workshop out a bit.

I found the Hornady dies, with lots of other stuff too.

What I will run a test on their ammo when I get back.

We normally do a thorough cleaning of the rifles after we come back from our safari.

Once I have done that, I will load some ammo with the Hornady dies and see how they compare with my Redding ones.

I am flying away again on Friday, coming back on the 14th.

Roy and Rene arrive soon after just for one day.

Then Walter's surprise guest arrives a couple of days before we all fly together.

I spoke to Roy a couple of days ago, and he suggested to Walter that he should do some exercise to get into shape, because he has gotten tired of hearing his heavy breathing!

Walter's answer was "tell that old man to stay away from our tent if he does not want to hear our heavy breathing. I will only do that so my new partner enjoys it"

What he does not know is the man who is going to be sharing his tent!

I told him he is 6 foot 9 and weighs 400 hundred pounds!

He said "is he getting his own charter flight? Because I am not getting in the same plane with him!"

Never a bloody dull moment with this guy!

Basically I am all set.

Rifles are ready, ammo has been loaded, permits have been obtained and tickets booked.

Alan is going to be there next week, Roy and Rene are flying over in a few days time on their way to Dar.

Walter, however, is another matter. He is supposed to get ready.

He gets a bit confused on what to pack in one suitcase.

We are sitting in Male airport waiting to board our flight back home.

We had a few days break with the kids on an island on the middle of the Indian Ocean.

The kids start school tomorrow, and in two weeks time we head out on safari.

The only thing left for me to sort out is the sat modem from Thuraya.

The gentleman I deal with said everything is organized, and all we need is activate it before we leave.

I must say the new Thuraya wireless IP modem has been great last year.

It connects very easily to the satellite, and several of us use it at the same time with its wireless.

We will do the usual Live Report from camp, which seems many of you enjoy, and of course we all enjoy sharing with you.

Many of you ask about our cameras, I will post details of what cameras we are taking in the next few days.

I got a PM asking about the cameras, and I thought I will explain that here.

For our main hunting footage we are using 2 Canon XF305. We like these very much, and certainly makes life so much easier with disk based storage rather than tape.

The quality is exceptionally good too.

We have several Sony PJ390, with long lasting batteries - up to 12 hours each.
The plan is to put them by waterholes, and let them video continuously throughout the day. We might get some interesting footage.

The Sony PJ790 I carry with me in the truck, to take footage of anything of interest.

The Canon 70D is a new SLR camera that I wanted to use. WE normally carry it in the truck, and use it around the camp as well.

The Panasonic FZ200 is my favorite bridge camera. Again, it is normally carried in the truck, and used for general photos.

We have several Panasonic TZ40s, which are used by everyone to take any photos that interest them. It is a small pocket camera, and has a 20x zoom.

Sony NEX7 was given to us to try.

The Sony HX50 is a small pocket camera that has a 30X zoom. I was given this to try and report on it later.

Sony HX300 is a bridge camera that has a 50X zoom. Again we are trying this out.

The Gopro hero and Contour are action cameras.

The Bushnell is a trail camera we might use at the baits.

True.

But it is easier to take cameras than rifles.

That is why I only take 2 identical rifles.

They do the job as well as any rifle made.

Cameras, however, do improve in quality each year.

And I love using them too.

I was given two more cameras to test.

They are supposed to be a surprise, as both have their model numbers hidden.

One is a stills camera from Nikon, and one is a video camera from JVC.

Both have very high optical zooms, so it will be interesting to see how they perform.

I hope you enjoy using that camera.

I have no experience of it yet, and will report what I find.

The optical zoom is fantastic, but I am not sure how the image stabilizer will cope with that.

A Thuraya IP+ sat modem was delivered yesterday.
We tried and it and it all works great.

WE also got t5he Sat sleeve for the iphone, and tried that and it worked great too.

We will see how both these new products perform in the bush.

Tony - Bakes on AR - is joining us this year on safari.

I see on my Flightrack that his plane takes off in about 20 minutes from Australia.

He arrives here early tomorrow morning, has a bit of a rest, then he will join us in a BBQ for Hessa's birthday in the afternoon.

Friday morning he is taking an aerial tour of Dubai with Walter and his family.

And Saturday morning we head off to Dar.

Stay tuned for updates.

I will start a new thread for this year's hunt, and we all hope you enjoy participating with us on the forum.
