Lots of relaxing at camp today. Was nice. Tomorrow is the big day for Walter, so we will be out early looking for walterable animals.

Saeed had a great day in the field and I am sure he'll be posting shortly.

Alan had his guys put some hyena bait out in front of camp tonite, so I expect there will be some early action. The hyenas are already on it.

We had bean soup, Eland steaks over the fire by Rene, ugalli, salad for dinner and there was tripe (yuck!) for those that like it. The steaks were fantastic again!

Cheers,
Chris

Well, at least I am keeping track of what day it is.
Written reports so far substantiate that Saeed has taken 4 buffalo and Chris got 1 buffalo.
Not too baffling, unless there is another one I am missing.

Yesterday and today recap, possibles and probables, based on photographic interpretation, and partial written reports. Beautiful work. tu2

WEEK 2:

DAY 10, 10-08-2012
(photo re-interpretation, partial written reports)

A-Team:
Possibles: sable, zebra, impala
(Hippo killed on a small island suggests previous day's pics of trophy hippo)

B-Team:
Concludes 10-day hunt. Congratulations.
Close-up of buffalo horn might be Chris's buffalo from previous, or it is a "baffalo."

Z-Team:
Begins 10-day hunt tomorrow.
Walter never ceases to amaze ... popcorn

Day 11, 10-09-2012

A-Team:
Godzilla crocodile
Warthog (by Roy)

B-Team:
Chris is resting up for further service as gentleman to the bedchamber of King Walter.
Nothing gay about it! Cool

Z-Team:
Having had to postpone the hunting for the last 11 days,
Walter is as excited as a kid on Christmas Eve.
He gets to show his stuff tomorrow,
with a little help from his friends. old

************************************************************************************************

After only 11 days:

A-Team:
4 buffalo + 1 "baffalo"
1 crocodile
1 wildebeest
3 impala
2 kongoni
3 zebra
1 klipspringer
2 warthog
2 eland
1 hippo
1 sable
If anyone else is counting and can correct me, please do so. tu2

B-Team:
1 buffalo
1 wildebeest
1 kongoni
1 impala
tu2

Z-Team:
No serious mischief yet!!!

yuck
The only good way to beat the heat:
Do the "Crocodile Scarecrow" with waterproof ipod music.
Walter plays it safe by limiting his African swimming to no more than six-inch river depth.
He almost does the "deadman's float" with an occasional stationary backstroke, for exercise,
getting conditioned for the hunt.

Walter got his hunting started off with a bang (and bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang) this morning. Big Grin

First thing we found was a potentially walterable kongoni. Dean and Walter put on a leopard-like stalk and Walter connected on a 220 yd shot. We circled around and Walter put one more in to make sure it stayed down.

Then we headed to the river. There was a walterbeeste there that we had been seeing for a few days, and it turned out he was there again today. Dean and Walter again made a good stalk, old, but things did not work out unfortunately.

We thought we'd better get back to camp with the kongoni, since it was an hour an a half drive and it was warming up nicely (39.5 degrees C at 12:15 pm!!). On the way back to camp we bumped into an unfortunate impala, and Walter veritably leaped out of the truck into action and took care of business.

Lunch at camp was chili with mashed potatoes and tomatoes/onions/peppers.

We went out looking for zebra and mbogo in the afternoon, but did not find any. Walter did bag a couple of Guinea Fowl for the pot, with Alan's 17 HMR though.

Supper was buffalo steak with mashed potatoes and gravy, and cabbage/onions. mmmmmm...

Cheers!
Chris

Bwana Babu is showing the young folks how to get 'er done. Smiler This morning, shortly after a failed stalk on a herd of Walterbeeste, the Z-team got another chance. This time they made good on it, and ONE-SHOT-WALTER has returned. Big Grin

We went back to camp for lunch, and after a nice rest, went back out for an evening hunt. We also spent a little time putting up a couple leopard baits for Alan and Saeed.

We were looking for Walterhogs and buffalo, but did not come up with either.

The day ended with a delicious supper of onion soup, buffalo kabobs, rice and red cabbage.

Cheers!

Ah! The old hand-foot-and-butt creep through the grass.
Appears Roy bagged an Outer Circle buffalo: That lion bit off the tail is the only qualifying characteristic of the otherwise magnificent old dagga boy, hard bossed with worn tips. clap

Appreciate the bullet photos of Walterhog tail first under the skin of the off side, petals lost in early internal explosion, then penetration like an FN solid until terminal tumbling aiding in wounding,
and one dead buffalo with one bullet?
Perfect.
If only the "WalterDog" (GSC HV 300-grainer) will work as well in the ".375/404 Jeffery Saeed of 2012," it will be a resounding success. tu2

Yesterday Walter shot a wildebeast, and I shot a croc and a waterbuck.

We have a leopard feeding, and we are going to sit on the bait this evening.

I will try to add details to the photos when I do my hunt report after we get back home.

Due to lack of time - yesterday we got back to camp at 7 in the evening, without having had any lunch!

Selecting and processing photos takes all the spare time I have I am afraid.

Let's hope Walter does not get too excited over there.
Chris, make sure Walter keeps his nitroglycerin sublingual handy, and don't let him push himself too hard.
At the first bit of shortness of breath, make him slow down.
Show him a chocolate, then give him a nitro instead.
You'll have to keep the chocolate in the lunch cooler to keep it from melting in the heat. old

Today was an interesting day at each end, with a heckava lot of heat and inactivity in between.

First thing this AM we found a "simba kufa". It seems the lioness died of starvation from the look of her, but we also found a few embedded porcupine quills that may have played a role in her demise. One of them was stuck DEEP into her chest, on an angle that may have reached her heart, but must have at least played havoc with a lung or two.

Hard to know exactly what killed her...but even wierder was finding a civet cat dead about 10 m away, with no evidence of what killed it either.

The odd event was further punctuated by all of us (but especially me it seems) jumping up and down, and grabbing at our legs, etc. Seems in our single minded-ness of curiousity of what killed the cat, no-one noticed the line of army ants going by and we were all standing on it at some point!

I think it got up to 42 deg C again. We were looking for a walterable warthog and ended up taking an early lunch break to sit and watch a likely looking mbuga while we ate and sat out the heat of the day. Nothing came in and we survived.

Spent the afternoon looking for walterhogs again, finding nothing of consequence (lots of pigs but all small) until about 1/2 before dark. Dean went to check on a little waterhole just beside the road, and as he walked in, a lioness ran out! Apparently it was laying in wait for a hog to come for drink, but wanted no part of our intrepid PH.

Shortly afterward, while heading towards camp, we spotted a nice warthog close to the road. Walter, Dean, Gary and the trackers bailed of the truck quickly, but the pig moved into cover. They gave slow, stealthy chase and saw the pig continue up and over the crest of the hill and disappear. They went for a look and found fresh warthog holes, and thought they were worth a look. They looked in the first hole and found nothing. Then Dean and Walter circled around the next hole from behind, while Gary filmed them from the front. Walter was a step from the entrance of the hole when the hog came blasting out, surprising everyone. Another hog came out right behind, which surprise everyone even more. 3 seconds of chaos ensued with people jumping out of the way, and Walter taking a quick snap shot at the lead hog! The next thing that was heard was Ali laughing, and Walter laughing with him. Smiler Unfortunately the shot did not connect and the pig lit out for the next concession with his hind legs trying to pass his front legs!

Dinner tonite was butternut squash soup, followed by kongoni stew, rice, spinach and tomatoes with chillies and onions.

Cheers!
Chris
