Guess the bug has bitten me after my first safari with cruisers last year. Now wife and I are talking about a Buff hunt in the future. We both would be hunting, and for me, would like to be able to add some plains game, perticularly Eland, Bushbuck, and Springbuck. Now for us, we hunt for nice rep of species, dont need my name in some book. So where would be a good place to go for good animals, good camps, good people..... you get the picture.
Thanks!

If you are keen for a Classic wild Safari this season then www.kambakosafaris.com in northern Mozambique would be an ideal destination and as Kambako has some additional Buff Quota from an adjacent concession this season, they can offer a Safari at a very competitive price.
They also have excellent Eland and Bushbuck but no Springbok.

Things can often change very suddenly in Africa. What has been a good area today, might not be worth a visit tomorrow.

Who has ruled for decades might croak or be deposed in the near future and then depending on who takes power, everything can change overnight.

What what has been closed to hunting for years might have opened yesterday or will open tomorrow.

All those things have happened in the past and all will happen again in the future.

You don't say when in the future you hope to have your next hunt but unless you're planning to go on your next safari later this year, any research you do now will probably be wasted.

The world economy means that pretty much any hunt you want to book will be available the same year anyway. So my advice would be to sit back and wait and see what happens until you're no more than 12 - 18 months out from when you want to come over again.

Now that's an interesting thought. I usually book my hunts over a year in advance. I have sometimes had to do this to get the area or the PH I wanted, because they were booked for the current year. I may have to rethink. Don't have anything booked for this year!

The unusual hunts such as mountain nyala might still be hard to get but most of the more usual species will be available somewhere or other.... even if you have to shop around a bit. Wink

Poochuss, I haven't been yet, because of a job downturn, but I'll tell you who my son and I WANTED to book a hunt with...Jonathan Hulme of zambezi hunters. We met him at Dallas, this year, and I took an immediate liking to him. Do a search here, and he gets a lot of great comments. Get in touch with Mark Young, here on the forum. He books for Zambezi Hunters. I think you and your wife will like the Save concervancy. Good buff and great plains game, so I am told. Like you, I hunted cruiser 2 yrs. ago, and had a great time. This was going to be my next step, until the job situation went south.

At first I thought Steve was recommending folks wait until January or after to book a hunt for that year but looking at his post and seeing he states to book 12-18 months out I can agree that this should work in most cases. Personally I believe that booking as far out as you can is prudent as it gives you the choice of dates that work for you and are best for the game you want to pursue. It also insures that the animals you want will be available to you.

Since the conventions I've had quite a few inquiries about hunting in '10. In almost all cases there are hunt available but all animals wanted are mot available and the ideal dates are taken.

Just to clarify matters.

what I meant was that as the world economy is so buggered there's really no need to put a deposit down a long way ahead of time.

I reckon the next few years may well see a good many changes in the African hunting scene and therefore I believe a wise man would be well advised to adopt the attitude that it's better to wait and see what happens before committing money for hunts that only take place a long time in the future.

Hope that helps.

I have to say that I haven't ever seen a Springbok and a Buffalo in the same place other than in a zoo. Springbok you will find only in RSA, Bots and Namibia. I suppose there may be a fenced ranch or two in RSA that offers all these species in the same place. But that would make it a trophy shopping trip, not a hunt.

I do know a very good place where you will find plenty Buff, plenty Bushbuck, some Eland. I also know several places where you can find plenty of Eland and Springbok, but no Bushbuck or Buffalo.

So either you are going to have to do this in two hunts, or two stops on the same hunt.

If you want indigenous animals, you'll have to skip around a bit. Otherwise, safari in Tanzania, Mozambique or Zimbabwe for the Eland, Bushbuck and Buffalo. Take a couple of extra days going home and stay over in Jo'burg. It won't be a problem to set up a short Springbok hunt before you head home. PH can pick you and your wife up and bring you back.

It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

Going to Tanzania in his case would be kind of stupid; you need a 21 day license to hunt eland. Why would anyone do that?
