Bull Elephant are bloody hard to bring down/kill if you miss the brain, that's why he got up again, just stunned but because he was using a big bore rifle it dropped him. I'm no expert but if that had been a Tuskless she probably wouldn't have got up again and they could have put a finishing shot in while still on the ground.

Great footage by Justin, well i think it was Justin.

There is nothing wrong with this film, that's Elephant hunting for you.

Buzz will be the best person to comment on this as he was the PH.

With kind regards

I can't help asking myself why this has been posted ? It's obviously courting criticism rather than praise.
The video to me shows a typical final approach and shot. The outcome was not as clinical as the PH or hunter would have wanted, but with the presence of another bull close by the situation was handled calmly and correctly after the shot.
I particularly noted Buzz's calm assurance that the clients rifle handling was correct and safe at all times. There will no doubt be some comment about everyone's reaction when the bull was finally down, but a PH is there to ensure that the client has a successful and safe hunt. Times like that are for celebration not to remind anyone about their shortcomings.

Spot on Rob. How many times have we said here that if one hunts enough, there will occasionally be less than perfect shooting of one's quarry, up to and including loosing an animal? I know Ron and Buzz would have preferred a more clean outcome but this goes to show how difficult hitting the brain really is at times.

It also demonstrates the ability of a big bore rifle to temporarily knock an elephant down with a missed brain shot ... the definition of a "stopping rifle".

Because Trax is a troll and an asshole. And he gets a little tingle in his genitals anytime he is paid attention to. That's why he brings it up.

I will say however that this video SHOULD NOT have been posted on you tube. Bad form all the way around.

Gentlemen

Thanks for commenting on this guys- I appreciate the support. Trax to set the record straight Ron has hunted with me several times- he is an exceptional shot and has killed several elephant with me with one shot kills. However obviously on this occasion he did not and that is hunting- no matter how good a shot you are, no matter how many eles you have killed you will one day miss your mark and that happened in this particular occasion.

The hunt was filmed by Justin and both myself and Ron would never have posted such footage for public viewing. Like most of us here we realize that bad footage does alot of harm in the wrong hands- unfortunately Ron had an observer who had guided him on a few deer hunts in the States and who said he would love to come to Africa but could not afford it. Ron been the incredibly generous man that he is paid for him to come out and unfortunately he got his hands on the footage and put it on U -Tube.

Regards the comments after the hunt Rob has hit it spot on. A client comes to hunt an elephant and hopefully is successful. He has put alot of effort, practice and money into his adventure and it is a PHs job to to ensure that he has as good as an experience as possible and if that means focusing on the fact that he has his ele rather then botched shots then thats the way it should be. Cheers Buzz

I couldn't agree more with Todd, irrespective of the merits of a big bore rifle in this case, I have seen this same scenario happen to others and I don't mind admitting to myself, on most other species of game I have hunted. Sometimes things just don't align together and you don't get a clean kill.

Agree not the best for public viewing but Buzz has explained this. Goats are the worst in this sort of situation, they cry like human babies when hurt and is a distressing situation to handle.

Buzz - not wanting to hijack or divert this thread, but it would very much interest me to know from you what percentage of ele bulls taken (by you / your clients) are genuine one shot kills? And then as an add on how many buff (percentage) are one shot kills.

There was no reason to post this video. It was done solely to embarrass and cause controversy. Anyone who did not regard Trax as a troll before, knows exactly what he is now. My suggestion is simply to put the a-hole on ignore and when he makes posts like this for everyone to just resist the temptation to respond and feed his shallow ego.

I am beginning to think that both the PH and the client should have the rights to these things, and BOTH should agree in writing to any public posting, like you tube.

Buzz, you should tell you tube that that is your professional image and you want them to compensate you for it, and get it off the net.

While I can certainly understand that the hunter missed the spot and didn't make a clean kill like he wanted, and the animal was put down as quickly and humanely as possible after that point, and that these things happen, the guy's "friend" is not doing anyone any good and all his idiotic comments about if you don't like hunting show he knew that there would be a bunch of complaints.

Just plain stupid.

It really doesn't matter that Trax posted a link- its the "friend" that is the moron troll.

I am happy to stack up my contributions to the forum against Trax's any day. And I have no reservations about putting my name behind my posts and not hiding behind some internet blog name. If there was any doubt as to why he posted the video that doubt was removed when he concluded his post with the popcorn icon.

Wow. That shooter must be kicking himself, wondering what he was thinking when he paid the tab for the ignorant ingrate who felt he needed to display this to the world...not to mention the AR hero who brought it up here. Hunting is hunting, and just because it takes place in an imperfect world and doesn't always go as planned, certainly doesn't mean we need to shove it into the faces of fools like the ones commenting in that link.

I am curious about one thing. After the first couple of shots on the elephant, the shooter swaps his double for a lowly bolt gun. I'd love to hear the double-gun crowd weigh in on this.Smiler

The audio on my computer is a bit fouled up...but I could have sworn I heard him say something about "I wish I had my Blaser!"

Why make more of it than there is? Unless I heard wrong, he simply used all the ammo he had for the double and the animal wasn't down yet. Therefore Blake handed him his rifle. Nothing more than that!

Todd, you are correct that the shooter simply "used all the ammo he had for the double". ALL SIX ROUNDS (2 in gun, & 4 on belt)! shame

There have been a number of AR posts, and even a current one, regarding how much ammo to carry, regardless of rifle carried. We have both seen vids of guys loading from their shirt/pants pockets while the DG is going south - better than when it is in charge mode, but still totally unacceptable.

As a trained critical incident manager I recognize there are many things to use as discussion/debrief topics from this vid, but I am not gonna go there. And I have the highest regard for Buzz. However, this was the hunters first elephant and he was, IMO, totally unprepared for the moment of truth. He repeatedly states that he shot the ele in the brain - NOT! A head hit on an elephant is NOT a brain shot, as anyone who is a serious elephant hunter knows and is proved beyond any doubt in this vid.

I am sorry this vid was posted on YouTube and hope something will be done by the players to see that it is deleted. As many of us know, Trax is an AR troll and that is the only reason he posted this here.

The video...pretty cool. If you watch it you can learn a couple things about shooting an elephant. That hip shot to slow it down could be an invaluable (or valuable) bit of knowledge. Buzz telling the client to spine it as it was running away was good stuff. The hunter certainly looked at full capacity, not overly nervous or frightened, just the bullets did not end up exactly where intended, and had to use several. Hell, Buzz even missed once.
There is not a hunter on here who has hunted significantly who can say he or she has never had to use more than one bullet
And the elephant is just as dead as if it only took one shot. The guy got in a bit of extra shooting, just what he went to Africa to do.
I just wish Buzz would get rid of that god awful hat
Fabulous hunting video for us to see.
Probably not good You-Tube Fodder, as most You-Tube video's are not that great anyway, and generally show what has gone wrong, not what has gone right
From the looks of it, this was a successful elephant hunt-gone right by my standards

Thanks for the number of constructive-educational-informative comments regarding the hunt.
We can all learn from post hunt study of footage- from hunts that don't go to general plan.

Why people object to a hunting video being posted on a dedicated hunting site like AR for rational discussion,is beyond me.
Then you have people like MJines who keeps telling people he has me on 'ignore',
.. but keeps looking & commenting at my posts... cuckoo make up your mind man!

Interesting was the part where the client had to finish the hunt with a rifle he seemed unfamiliar with.
Apart from a left handed SxS shooter being handed a RH bolt rifle,
at 7:55 Buzz asks client to check if the safety is off on the bolt rifle handed to him,
at 8:55 client tries to fire the final round that put the beast to ground,
but finds he is trying to do so with the safety on.

My take that kill... First and foremost that is horrible fodder for youtube.

The first shot was hurried, and a frontal shot is probably not the best for a hunter's first elephant.

The rest was a bit of a fiasco(it happens to us all) but the worst part was the hunter mugging for the camera after his 7th shot while the elephant was still alive and wounded. The hunter looked pretty proud of the situation. I found that to be tasteless, so I am sure 99.9% of non hunters would be turned off by that also.

I hope that will be pulled from youtube as it is not the way I want to see hunting portrayed.
