At the Dallas Safari Club show, Sportsmen on Film had a booth and Ken Wilson was booking hunts in Uganda and Angola. From his handouts I learned that Uganda Wildlife Safaris Ltd says they are already booked for 2010 and are now booking for 2011. Roger Whittall Safaris of Zimbabwe is booking hunts in Angola for 2010 and has some hunts available for 2010 and 2011.
From the price lists, it appears that Uganda trophy fees are very competitive and the Angola fees even more so (Hippo $3,500 and Cape Buffalo 2,500).
Has anyone on AR booked hunts in either of these countries yet? If all goes well, these new areas should provide some new adventures and some price competition for African hunters.

I already have prices for next year in Uganda with UWS but just inquired this evening to see if any dates are open for this year due to cancellations. We will add mixed bird hunting (upland and waterfowl) and the possibility to add left over quota for Nile Buff and PG if available for 2011 while on birding safaris. We start hunting soon.

Angola is open and I had some good interest at Dallas. Most of the fees are very attractive, including Tsessebe and Sitatunga. Any questions feel free to contact me.

I ran into a guy at the gun range saturday shooting his new S2 .500NE. I got to talking to him and he mentioned hunting in Angola????? Anyone who has enough taste to like African DG hunting and DRs is an OK guy in my book, but when he started talking about booking hunts in Angola I thought he was high or something! So what's the story with Angola???

I picked up lit from Ken's booth and also from The Hunting Consortium booth. Personally I would wait a year or two to see how things shake out and give others time to set off the mines Eeker. I am sure the hunting in the SE corner is going to be good, I mean can game differeniate between Angola and the Caprivi.

I too looked at the Angola situation and the trophy fees make it really tempting,, then I look at the state department advisaries and it tempers my interest some,,, but the same is true with Zim... Not the most stable place either,, it does add to the adventure,,,,,,So you are on the stalk of a really nice sable,,only a 5 grand trophy fee,, you close the distance,, the Ph says,, when he clears the bush take him,, he takes the step,,, boom,, landmine,, who pays?? Seriously,, it is exciting to see new areas starting to open up with new oportunities.

Interesting! What are they offering on license? I heard something about lion, but I didn't hear what else. Maybe selective hearing! Big Grin

I drove up from Namibia into Angola to fish last March .. saw a pair of dik diks in about ten days or so ... So I would suggest that the hunting in the south west corner would be poor .. The people were very friendly and safety was never an issue ...

I'm going to Uganda in June with Uganda Wildlife. Quotas are restrictive, making it a specialized hunt, but I'm fascinated to see the country, and looking forward to hunting Nile buffalo and a bit more. Am re-reading Brian Herne's "Uganda Safari" book right now as homework...there isn't much out there on hunting in Uganda.

Craig - read the book also and have wanted to hunt there ever since.
You should find a large audience for your reports on your hunt. I look forward to reading about how it now compares to the Uganda of Herne's day.

FWIW, we'll be adding hunting Uganda details to the www.shakariconnection.com website shortly. We've had most of the info for a while but have been waiting for the game laws to be finalised.

As has been discussed, Uganda has had a limited operation for a while now and five immense true wilderness areas have recently been awarded. The new areas are very different to the others and will even have a separate set of game laws. Trophy quality in these areas are unbelieveable! thumb

Obviously they still need to get quota for some species and it will take time to get significant quota but I'll bet that within five years, Uganda will be challenging Tanzania for the title of jewel in the crown of African hunting.

I think Steve Kobrine hunts Uganda. Interesting guy. He has shot more with a bow than just about anyone except Archie Nesbitt. Those two guys are amazing.

Yeah, I think you're right but not the new true wilderness areas (as yet).

When they open properly, you can expect them to re-write the history of African hunting. thumb

One thing I'm waiting to hear about Uganda is if it wii be the 3rd country with lesser kudu available to hunt. May be a few years, maybe never again.

Yes, lesser kudu are on the species list and trophy fees will be very reasonable..... I'm 99% sure of the fee but will wait until I'm 110% sure before I comment on exact price.

I'm sure the first couple of years will be mostly buffalo/plains game hunts but when they get significant quota for cats & elephant, just watch the place take off.

Time will tell my friend but as much as I love Tanzania, I reckon Uganda will offer better hunting and at least as importantly, will have a better system and the people involved will have less self interest and more interest than TZ.

I reckon it's gonna be the absolute dog's bollocks. thumb

If I wasn't booked to Zim this July, I would be going to Angola with Roger. I've hunted with Roger twice and he wouldn't be going there if he didn't have his ducks in a row. Africa being what it is, I would expect some blips but that's what makes it exciting!
