Karamojo BillI need a picture
HELP guys, I'm in a spitting match on another forum about elephant meat, (and others, like croc) not being used...just wasted. I know that I saw a picture on here of natives lined up for about 100 meters waiting for their share. Could you re-post it or direct me to the link?

MJinesFrom when I shot my bull. The recovery team was eating the meat on the spot. They would just throw chunks of meat in the coals and eat it ashes and all. Then they progressed to kebobs. Nothing goes to waste.

Michael RobinsonKB, be careful how far you try to take this. In the Selous Game Reserve, in Tanzania, the government does not allow human settlement. So, when an elephant is killed, all that is taken is what the hunting camp cares to consume.
Still, the concept of "waste" as it applies to hunting has always seemed ridiculously anthropocentric to me.
Nothing is wasted in Africa. What we humans don't consume, the lion, hyena, jackal, vulture, etc. put to very good use!
In settled areas, the humans do get most of it. In my experience, very hungry and protein-starved people devour all but the skin and bones!
Here are some photos of what happened to my Caprivi bull a few years ago:

shakariBill,
MR is quite right in what he says and that rule applies to all areas in Tanzania that are designated as Game Reserves.
You also need to remember that in fenced areas such as South Africa, the meat remains the property of the landowner and he most of this is sold commercially.

Not entirely true MR, here is a local chewing the "fat/ marrow" out of the porous bone of an elephant...
They do not go through all this trouble for nothing...

TANZ-PHIn Tanzania, not only is it difficult (due to the remoteness of some hunting blocks) to get the people to the elephant meat...many people in TZ are strict Muslim and it is forbidden animal to eat for some.

However, even some of my non-muslim staff turn up their noses at elephant meat, (as we usually always have plenty of better meat in camp).
Last year my client requested some meat cooked (for the main course) from the elephant we shot....
I told the cook to prepare the elephant meat and wisely instructed him to also prepare something else, as a "backup dish". After just one bite (and 15 minutes of chewing), the client said: OK That's enough! The "backup" of bushpig spagetti was delicious!

zimbabweInteresting thing on the last Elephant i killed. The first man on the site to help with the skinning was carrying a large jug of water,a pot,and a sack. He then proceeded to build a fire and put a pot of water on to boil. As soon as it was boiling he took the mealie-meal from the sack and proceeded to make a BIG pot of Sadza. THEN the skinning started. As soon as there was meat available strips were placed actually IN the fire and everyone ate all day long as they worked. The one man did nothing all day but tend the fire and keep the meat and sadza coming. Absolutely nothing was wasted except the stomach contents and the hip bones, and I mean EVERYTHING. After the men finished the women came and literally picked the remaining bones clean and even took the bones. I did not believe there could be that complete a use of an animal, but it was TOTALLY gone.

Kyler HamannKaramojo,
I wrote a fairly detailed article on using the elephant meat for Sports Afield a few years ago. Email or PM me if you'd like me to send a copy.
