I will be taking my 30 day trip to Moz and a Namibia trip off the menu for this year. Also my planned trip to Argentina with good friend and AR member Dr. Juan Pozzi for Red Stag in March is off until next year as well.

After three weeks waiting, finally got an MRI on the knee, in to see an Orthopedic Doc, and the results of my injured knee. Completely torn quad muscle on left knee. Surgery to put everything back in place was this last Wednesday and full recovery slated for six months to get back to 100%. So lots of down time in the immediate future. Thanks for all of the "well wishes" and offers to help out, really appreciate it.

Looks like I missed a really good Show at SCI this year, but hey, will be ready by Fall to get back out and after them.

Due to a recent injury sustained while hunting in Mexico, Africa and ALL future hunting may be off my plate for a good while or possibly forever.

I managed to sustain a possible major injury to my left knee on the first day of a hunt in Mexico. Had to be moved out of Mexico by land as couldn't fly. Preliminary reports indicate a fractured knee cap and according to ER Docs a good chance of a torn quad. MRI and follow up with Orthopedic Doc next week to see the extent of damage and if surgery will be needed. Hoping for the best of news, prepared for something less.

Plans were already in place for my "annual" 30 day stay in Mozambique as well as a trip to Namibia. Also the SCI Show is out for this year after 17 in a row.

Maybe it's time to become a Big Game Fisherman instead of a Big Game Hunter and stay out of the rocks?

Larry, I am very very sorry to hear this.

As a hunter, I know how much hunting means to you.

I pray that your injuries are treatable, and you are able to keep on hunting.

I would rather have my SCI sparing partner standing on two strong legs beer

I wish you all the best.

The recovery for knee replacement is about 6-12 weeks plus some stiffness for about a year.

I would bite the bullet and go with the new joint if I were you. Lifes too short to waste it trying to push a bad situation.
Get fixed and get out there ASAP
Good luck

Sad news Larry, and all the best for a quick and solid recovery.

Many conditions are healed through the power of the mind.....just keep the thoughts of an African Campfire, an 18 year old malt whiskey, good friends and the freedom of the outdoors foremost in your mind.

Larry,

Very sorry to hear of your accident. You have been reading my mail. My wife Pam, you met her while at DSC a while back, fell in South Africa and essentially shattered her knee cap. It was suggested that they just take it out and replace it with a prostethic one. She elected to have her own fixed. A pretty exhaustive surgery and a lot of bailing wire to put it together. Along with a long battery of physical therapy she is good as new. They wound up having to take the wire out as it was rubbing the joint some and was painful. The Doctor wanted to leave it in so that it would provide additional strength but it was just too painful. The good news is that now that all is healed she is back to hunting and doing all that she used to do. Hell, even the substantial scar has all but gone away. Anyway, don't give up before the surgery even starts! Hang in there, because if you say you can't, that's just how it will turn out. You can't. Wishin' you a speedy recovery.

Tenga cuidado,

Hoot

Larry, ER doctors are notorious for giving grave diagnosis. and then you find out it's not nearly as bad from the ortho. they told me i would never be able to ride motorcycles again that was nearly 300,000 miles ago.

Larry, i have sustained both of these injury. The knee cap although it hurts really bad isn't that big of a deal, just some time to heal as any other bone. But, the quad can be a big deal if you don't get to using that muscle as soon as possible. Quads shut down and atrophy quickly and can be a very hard muscle to rehab and get back going again. get to using it as fast as possible. A bicycle would be my suggestion, one leg so not to compensate for the injured.
Good luck.

Larry, 2nd on what NeilPH said. Also remember that if you cannot (temporarily) hunt as hard as you'd like, there's always a Plan B. I have late-stage Lyme disease, and when I have a hunt booked and it flares up, I still hunt. Maybe slower and for different species than originally planned, but a-hunting I will go! Best of luck for a full recovery.

Larry,

I am all to familiar with how a serious injury can affect your outlook. But I am also here to tell you that you can overcome just about anything with a positive attitude. What seems insurmountable at the time of the injury will be nothing more than a building block of character and toughness as you heal and age.

Here is a very special picture of me after a little tiny sports accident in 2005. I was told that my days as a fighter were over. I was now going to be a water aerobics, yoga guy IF I was lucky..

This is me in 2014 after 10 rounds. Water aerobics and yoga MY ASS!!!

You will get over this and it will make you a stronger, better, more capable person.

PS

Since 2005 I have recovered from a dislocated elbow with a fully torn bicep tendon with two surgeries. A busted elbow olecranon fracture with a partially torn triceps tendon with two surgeries for repair. I am currently up for an AC joint surgery on my left shoulder.

You'll be hunting again before you know it...

Larry,

As has already been mentioned the knee cap maybe the least of your injuries.

Was it a displaced patella fracture? In some cases the quad pulls the broken portion of the patella upwards.

An actual quad tear will be a much longer recuperation time.

Larry,

Sorry to hear about your injury. I believe I know how old you are and I suspect this isn't the first time you've been injured. If this is the most serious injury you've had then heed Surestrike's wisdom. Injuries can slow you down but they can't completely stop you unless you let them.

Joyce had a complete ACL tear requiring grafting with a bucket handle tear of the medial meniscus and partial tear of the lateral meniscus. All from innocently making a quick lateral movement. The Ortho told her there was a great chance she would have lifelong complications from it. Her answer, "No I won't". - ATTITUDE.

You can do this!! If surgery is warranted push through the rehab. Pain can disappear with time. If it doesn't then push through it. It really does come down to your choice.

In November 2013 when Joyce was laying in the hospital bed after back surgery with more erector set hardware than Surstrike's neck from the cancer eaten vertebrae, we kept a picture of her in a handstand above her bed. The Docs and Nurses would ask, "What's that about". Her answer was, "That's me and it will be me again".

She's less than a year out from Chemo and has been back Crossfitting seriously for two months. She's over halfway back to her PR's (Personal Records in # of pushups, pull-ups, weight lifted etc.)

In short, it is about attitude and mental toughness. Never accept what you're told you can't do. Your will can determine what you can do.

Cheers and best of luck with the recovery and outcome.

Jim

We just went through a somewhat similar situation with my daughter who fell and suffered a lis-franc fracture of her foot. A very serious injury, they are always bad, it just depends on how bad. 3 months later she is now doing light walking on it without a boot, hoping to get back to dancing salsa, playing volleyball, etc before long.

I know you know this but, just in case, be CERTAIN that you get an orthopedics doctor who is F.A.C.S. (Fellow of the American College of Surgeons) certified in your particular injury area.

I've had 4 knee surgeries already and I'm "only" 54. It hasn't stopped me yet, and won't. If you take that same attitude you'll be back in the field before you know it. Those are injuries that can be overcome. Don't accept things any other way. Best of luck in your recovery.

Larry this is not a fatal injury. I raced Moto-cross motorcycles for years and have had the same injury with all the tendons in the left knee ripped apart as well way back in the 70s and have hunted and raced for years since that.

You just need a good ortho surgeon and some time and you will be back in Moz chasing buffalo.

If you saw the scars on both my knees you would think I had had a pair of leg transplants!

Larry,
This is a setback, not a sayonara. I had a partial replacement on my right knee in 2010, then a full replacement of the left in 2011. In 2013 I developed an infection in the right joint that required it to be removed, followed by 7 weeks of IV antibiotics, followed by 5 weeks wait, then another full replacement. The 3 months without a joint required me to use a wheelchair to get around. All is well, now, and Miss Vicki and I are headed to the RSA in June. Just think of your recovery the same way that you approach a long stalk on an ele or buff in the heat-it's neither short nor pleasant, but eventually the end will be well worth it. Best of luck.

as the others said attitude will help you.

i had muscles, tendons and ligaments cut on the superior part of the knee.

the worst was to recover the quad as it was loosing mass on a daily basis but with good people you ll recover and you will be the best weather forecast guy around when moisture or snow or cold will come you will know before the rest.

i can still climb our mountains.

all the best.

First off, thanks to all who have posted best wishes, helpful hints and their own personal experiences with this type of thing. I truly do appreciate every comment.

Two things that have me a little bummed out I guess. Having to wait 12 days to get an MRI and see a real Ortho doc. Still have 5 days to go. Seems I could have used this time to get started on some sort of treatment. The other believe it or not is that in all my 71 years I have never had an accident/injury that resulted in a broken bone, pulled or stretched ligaments or muscles, no sickness of any consequence, only been in a hospital for two days getting 4 stint implants in my heart arteries eight years ago. I know this is a good thing but makes me a very inexperienced, poor attitude patient. Wink

Again thanks for all the encouragement and will put your thoughts and comments to use in going forward.

Larry perhaps you could send me the money you would spend on safaris and I'll take them on your behalf Big Grin I'm sure that would be a great incentive to you to recover quickly and get back out in the field tu2

Seriously now, it would be a tragedy if this holds you back from doing what you obviously are very passionate about but I am sure you will overcome your injury and be back out there on the hunt and my very best wishes for that.

It is a bugger as we get older, I'm not quite up to your age yet but I often now think back to what I used to be able to do and the places I got into. I try and avoid thinking ahead to the time where one must admit defeat and accept that the time has come to quietly retire the guns. I hope I will be blind, deaf and too stupid by then to know Confused
