Sounds like you've been there too! What did you ride?

.................................................................. jumping

Honda 250 Elsinore was the first bike. I then went KTM and things improved exponentially. I look at bikes today and just shake my head at the travel front and rear.

In 1972 I sold a Honda 350 SL "street/dirt" and lousy at both to get money for Joyce's engagement ring. Took me another 11 years to buy another bike.

When Honda came out with the interceptor in 1983 I was lucky enough to hunt one down at a small shop in New Cumberland, PA. Quite a first year owning the first US released crotch rocket.

Bloody hell Jim. Never realised you were a biker. Although it does explain the silly haircut.

Key word Mate!

Larry, sorry for the hijack. Put your head down and march through this road bump!

Cheers
Jim

Larry, It is probably not as bad as you think for the long haul. I have had knee problems with both knees for many years including surgeries to both. About five safaris back I was hunting with a young PH who wanted to follow a spooked waterbuck up a steep ridge of somewhat loose rock., I knew it was not something I should do as the chance of the animal being there when we reached the top was slim but went anyway and as I though never got a sighting of the waterbuck. By the time we came down, my knee was swollen and painful. I suffered with it for 9 more days and the result was another surgery when I came home.
The following year I hunted two elephants in a very long tracking hunt that was difficult, but insisted that some terrain be tackled as I needed and all went well. My point is : you will most likely come back from this very well if you have a good surgeon and do your therapy afterwards. Even if there is some degree of damage left you will most likely be able to change certain things to continue doing what you enjoy. I never travel without my knee brace just in case it acts up but seldom need to use it at all. I still do everything I did before only a bit slower. Keep a positive attitude, it goes a long way ! Good luck.

If DDRHOOK can manage to hunt Africa with only one leg and not a single word of complaint, an occasional dodgy knee shouldn't be too much of a hassle if both PH & client are aware of the problem. Wink

I don't have first-hand experience with a serious injury like that, but my uncle, who is very close to me, did. In 1984, at the age of 40, he was in a very serious car wreck. Broken spine. Doctors told him he would never walk again. About a month later he was in elk camp. True, he was wrapped up in a sleeping bag the whole time and my dad had to help him get around, but he was in camp, and a few months later he was walking on crutches. That was thirty years ago. Since then he has killed dozens of very good pronghorns, some B&C class deer-- both white tails and mulies-- and several elk, including one real monster. Oh, yes; also a Colorado desert bighorn. He has to hunt out of a vehicle or a stand, but he dresses out and skins his own animals and does all his own butchering. He designs home remodels, reads a ton of books and is a sculptor. If it weren't for the fact that flying is very uncomfortable for him, we would have hunted Africa together by now (dad passed away fifteen years ago.)

From what folks are saying it sounds like if you just work hard enough, you'll get back to "normal." But even if you don't, it really isn't the end. You just might have to modify the program a bit and "make a plan." Hang in there and keep us posted!

Good luck with your recovery. Thirteen years ago I had my left knee replaced and seven years ago my right. I was able to make 8 trips to Africa and play golf three days a week during that period. Get a walking stick to provide a little support and don't let people talk you into jogging. For me running was the worst thing to do and swimming the best. High impact activities are the things to avoid.

Larry, Get a good doc and better physical therapist and you will up and at 'em in about 8 weeks or so. Broken knee caps heal and quads are just muscles and torn or pulled they heal too. Sounds like you didn't damage any tendons or ligaments, so it will be ok and you will make that 30 days in Moz I'm willing to bet. Good luck with the recovery. Best, EB
