What has been your experience wearing Kuiu clothing in Africa? I'm headed back to RSA in June and have a bit of a concern about wearing my Kuiu gear there with all the thorns, and other things that seem to poke you unsuspectingly. Over the past two years, or so, I've gone to wearing almost strictly Kuiu gear on my hunts. So, should I plan on wearing them, or leave them at home and go back to the old school stuff? Thanks, Graybird "Make no mistake, it's not revenge he's after ... it's the reckoning."

I'd of thought wearing a couple pairs of $30 shorts and a couple pairs of $30 shirts would have been fine. The ph's we see on film seem to use little more and some of those goofy guys boycott footwear!

Whatever you wear is probably going to take a pasting where thorns etc are concerned but the one thing you need to avoid wearing is anything that cannot be ironed. ALL items of clothing for the hunting party must ALWAYS be properly dried & thoroughly ironed to ensure any bot fly eggs that might be there are killed before you put them on & the bastards drill into you.

Shakari is absolutely right. You don't need your synthetic fashion camo in Africa. You actually don't need camo anywhere, but who am I to discourage your self expression.

Never heard of them, so I went to their website to check it out. Aside from perhaps a packable down vest or jacket, which of those products would have any utility for African hunting? Being a bit old-fashioned myself, I'd be a little embarrassed to wear that stuff anywhere.

I have used the Kuiu a couple times in South Africa. If you get into some real thorny bushes you will get poked but the pants hold up well. As a matter of fact the Kuiu pants have held up much better for me than cotton "safari pants" that I have used. I used to always rip those on something and walk around with a big tear for the rest of the trip. For hunting pants I pretty much only wear Kuiu anymore. For those that don't like fancy camo there is non camo Kuiu clothes that will outperform and be more comfortable than just about any traditional safari clothes or jeans.

My Kuiu gear held up really well in Alaskan brush and Minnesota thorns this year, but I don't think I'd take it to Africa, except for maybe the merino t-shirts. I have a feeling that the hot irons they use would be damaging to the coatings and synthetic fabrics they use in the pants.

My thoughts would be to explicitly request on air drying for my clothing and no irons. In trips past, I usually wore my upland bird pants with the briar protective fronts. However, since my last trip to Africa, I've gone to Kuiu clothing for all my hunting. I really like the comfort and fit of the Kuiu clothing, but am resistant to take them because of the thorns and typical washing practices. Heck, I even wear my Attack pants in solid colors for running around town, etc. Graybird "Make no mistake, it's not revenge he's after ... it's the reckoning."

If you don't have everything properly dried & thoroughly ironed you run the risk of bot flies getting into your body & it ain't pleasant. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Botfly http://www.cracked.com/article...g-bugs-in-world.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23eimVLAQ2c Your choice though.

Steve, Interesting you mention this. In prior trips over, no one and I mean no one, from booking agents to outfitters and PHs, have ever mentioned the concern over bot flys. You get the typical Mosquitos and tick routine, but not bots. I'm not arguing, just sayin'. Graybird "Make no mistake, it's not revenge he's after ... it's the reckoning."

Probably because they've never had them or had to dig 'em out of some other poor bugger.

I should add that it's far from guaranteed you'll get them by not having everything ironed but it's not for nothing that every good safari camp has full time laundry staff & most hunters wear cotton clothes that are always properly ironed.

First time I went over, Jeff told me about them. I thought he was kidding until I got to the Luangwa and the PH told me the same thing. Nasty stuff, do not watch a video on it!
