One load I use is 67grains VV140(Vitavouri) and the Woodleigh 347grains bullet. This is a great load with no pressuresigns at all.
The question is, I have some Hawk bullets in 325grains that I want to load.
What would be an ok starting load for this bullet and vv140? Should I go up or down or try the same load as for the 347 grains bullet?
I hope someone can help me, I'm a novice and need some help from you guys.
It's nice too see that the old 10,75 are getting more and more popular!

i am a big believer in dropping the charge back when you change bullets. I would start with a starting load, or fall back 10% and work up.

this is YOUR call, as you are the reloader, I am just sharing my experience, as load data on the internet is a dicey thing, at best

I would start with the same load for a 325 gr. bullet and work up from there....Loading data on the 10.75x68 is scarce to say the least, its probably not a round for the new reloader, but you will be OK if yo do as I suggest, just watch for pressure signs as you go..In your case that will be any marks on the case head, flat primers, sticky bolt, cratering primer firing pin holes..

I have no experience with vv140 powder, but you want something with a burning rate as close to IMR-4198 as you can get for the 350 gr. bullets..I shoot the 340 gr. Northforks, the 350 gr. Woodleighs and the 400 gr. Woodlieh softs and solids..I also have a treasured stach of 350 gr. Bridger flat nose solids...

2375 FPS is my average velocity for the 350 gr. bullets.

For the Woodliegh 400 gr. softs and solids I use WW-748 for about 2200 FPS, so you would need a simular powder I suppose...

Let me know your results with that powder, I would be very interrested.

thanks Ray!
I will post the result of the 325grains bullet. This will be a training load so I can get used to the recoil and rifle. I will try the same load as for the 347 grains and maybe go a bit up from there.

I started working on my latest 10.75x68 today as its finished for now, and it has a very tight chamber and bore and shoots about 3 grs. less powder all the way around than my other 10.75x68...always a refresher, and a good reminder to start 10% below recommended loads..ended up with a stuck case in the die from shooting the old loads I had...

Silly boys, grow up and quit fooling with those obscure little popguns. Wink

To what end this madness?

I have been corrupted to .404 Jeffery fan, but that is as kinky as I get.

Back to practicality in bolt actions:
.375 Weatherby
.416 Remington Magnum
.458 Lott
.500 A-Square

Best single shot or SXS double rifle for all around use:

.500/.416 NE

Good bullets and lots of them. Art Alphin developed that one as the .416 Rimmed, and its time is now.

10.75x68??? Sheesh! roflmao

Just trying to change the sorry subject.

I own & shoot two original Oberndorf 10.75s and like the round very much. However, if I wanted a 423 bore and was starting from scratch on a custom, I'd opt for the Jeff which requires only a little additonal work on the magazine of a standard length action.

Yeah, but I already got a 404 Jefferys, so why not a mild mannered 10.75x68...that little gun is just a matter of a new barrel, and very little tweeking of any magazine, it holds 4 down in the Mauser magazine, no need for a drop box, easy as making a 9.3 or 338-06, so its a viable option, and it will hammer a buff plenty good with a 350 gr. bullet at 2300 plus or a 400 gr. bullet at up to a bit over 2200 FPS and with todays good bullets especially monolithics its just a dandy and the recoil is a maidens carress, well almost...

Nice cartridge, the 10.75x68, I am really liking it, is it practical? no its not, nothing is practical except the dull and boring .416 Remington, also a caliber I dearly love..

Remember the only difference between men and boys is the size of their toys...mine are guns and horses and I doubt that either ever made me a dime if I counted all that stuff that don't count! beer

Forrest,
My heartfelt condolences to you. Hang in there and things will get better. Wink

Whatta youse guys think about the AR-30 in .338 Lapua Magnum? Maybe topped with a 4x-16x Schmidt&Bender? Would this be an O.K. plains game gun for Africa? Treasure or trash?

Cheers beer

fla 30-06,
Since you been shooting the 10.75x68 longer than the rest of us, how about posting some good loading data with modern powders?? It would be appreciated...

Forrest,
Oh, I see! You are planning for your old age, when the handicapped cartridge will be necessary for the handicapped hunter.

Could a gun-crutch be had (sort of like a sword-cane) so that one could use it as a crutch in stalking? Then whip the ol' 10.75x68 out of the crutch scabbard at the moment of truth. Butt pad could serve as crutch pad in armpit too.

Maybe a matched set of crutch-guns with leather covered pads. .410 shotgun for left armpit and 10.75x68mm for right armpit?

Good plan for the sunset years. thumb

Mr. Atkinson, I've had my rifles for about 2 years now and I mainly shoot one load: 347 grain Woodleigh softpoints in Bertram brass (it was on sale otherwise I would have bought Horneber), 64 grains H335, for about 2340fps. I've also tried 58 grains of IMR4198 for about 2420fps.
I supplied this data to you and the others awhile back when you asked readers for their favorite loads after you sold your Hoffman and started building another 10.75. I guess you weren't paying attention, just like my first post above that you didn't read carefully.

10.75,
I loaded up some 340 gr. Northforks with a grain less than your load, I used 66 grs. and it was fine, 67 was a tad warm in my new rifle, which seems to lean towards below recommended loads in any powder, tight chamber, tight bore, whatever...

Have you chronographed your 67 grs. of VV140 or do you have a idea what the velocity is with a 347 gr. Woodleigh....I wonder if the 350 gr. Woodleigh for the 404 wouldn't do just as well as the 347 gr. 10.75 bullet. It is probably a bit tougher and I would prefer that I think...

Hey,
I´m a absolute 10,75mm Mauser fan. I load the 347grs Woodleigh SNRN with a powder charge of 66grs Rottweil R902. I also tested a 300grs Degol bullet, but I wasn´t satisfied with the accuracy.
Here a picture of the rifle, who built my dad for me.

Ray, what kind of groups were you getting with the Hoffman. I have three loads that print into one ragged hole at 50 yards and open up to just under an inch at 100.

I got about 1 to 2 inches, never over two, but I was shooting quickly and standing with a rest on a post at about 75 yards..It was still cold in Idaho then, and I was not inclined to be very carefull....It shot a tad high or low, and when I got home I changed something like the front sight or cut the rear sight and never got to shoot it again after that, as you bought it...

What loads did you shoot...My new one won't take as much powder as the Hoffman by a couple of grs. The Hoffman loads really flatten the primers and left a slight extractor mark and put a ring on the case head, that inspection revealed to be the beginning of case seperation, those were the loads listed in the magazine article I sent you.. This gun shoots 2 to 3 grs. less for a max load, the Hoffman handled them beatifully.. ...
