Hey Gents, newbie about this whole portion. This just recently came about for my father, who is due to retire after 40 years of service to the USCG. My brother and I came up with an idea to take him for a dove hunt in Argentina, something he's always talked about but never had to the time to do. We'd really like to do this for him as a gift. Now none of us have ever been hunting in that area, and I'm the only one who's ventured as far south to only Tijuana which was an experience I'm not bound to recount. Can I please have some pointers or advice before taking this trip? What kinds of fee's or any paperwork necessary before taking the trip over? Money is not an issue, we'd just like to see him have a hunt of a lifetime, especially considering that he's been ill lately and we've never done anything like this before. We're saving Africa for a little later time, but this hunt is kind of breaking our seal of hunting strictly in Alaska. Thanks! "Molotov Cocktails don't leave fingerprints" -Dr. Ski

Not much red tape in shooting doves here. You should get in touch with one of the many outfitters and ask questions. Be ready to shoot 1000-plus shells in a day. In several zones doves are vermin. Now a hunter from USA must pay 131 bucks for entering the country and a fee of (the last I remember) another 100 greenbacks for each firearm introduced. Two shotguns are allowed for each hunter and you must get some papers from the nearest Argentine consulate (this usually means forwarding to your outfitter the model and number of each gun). Look in this forum and in the Outfitters one for offerings about Argentine wing shooting, rated as the best in the world and then some. Regards

I have been the last 5 or 6 years and am going again this year. My advice to you would be to realize that all Argentine dove hunts are not created equally. In some cases you stay in a hotel in town. Daily you are bussed 1.5 to 2 hours to the field on way. You stay all day . Then you have the bus ride back. The place I go to hunts their own property from a lodge on the property. At times you can walk to your shooting station. Other times they take you for a 5-10 minute drive. There is always a mid day break with a fantastic meal at lunch. Also, don't be swayed too much by the claims that you can shoot 1,000 rounds a day. Honestly that isn't that much for Argentina. Personally, I STOP at 1,000 rounds for each shoot, morning & afternoon. In other words, I am shooting 2,000 rounds a day and I am quitting. The most I took in a single afternoon shoot was 1,320 doves. I killed that many doves in less than 3 hours! I would also inquire about the nature of the shooting. There are some places where the birds are flying en mass from point A to point B. Virtually every shot is the same. These are generally shoots over agricultural fields. Other places have a much wider variety and challenging shooting. It is more fun IMHO. I do have a comment on something Naintal said. In theory you are supposed to get the permits from the Consulate. Here in Florida, they want us to actually visit the Consulate which is in Miami. I spoke with my outfitters and they said it is not a problem. I head to the RENAR office in the BA airport and got the permits there. No problem at all. I would take padded baseball batting gloves. It makes a world of difference to your hands. Also moleskin and medical tape. If you don't, your hands will be burnt and cut badly. I would also take some anti-inflammatory pills. It will help with the stiffness and soreness. I would take 20 gauge guns. It is hard to describe just how badly you get beat up on this trip from recoil. Generally they shoot these Caza shells. They burn very dirty and aren't that good. Typically for about $1 to $1.50 more per box, they can get Fiochhi's. They are much better. The other item is the physical location of the hunt. This may require another flight. The drive across town to the domestic airport is fairly long. These people drive pretty crazy. The first time we did it, we got hit 3 times and no one even slowed down! The domestic flights are notoriously not reliable as to leaving on time. The other option is a charter that can leave from Ezezia. However, that can be expensive. larryshores is giving you good advice. I've only been to Argentina once and it was an 'adventure' (a screw up that you survive). We had some outstanding dove shooting but we went with a questionable outfitter and there was plenty of drama. Spend the extra bucks on an operation that puts you up on the land you are shooting on with nice accomadations. Avoid the long van rides to the shooting grounds. 20 gauge is good. 1000 rounds of shooting is PLENTY in a days time.Don't try to do too much in too short of time, i.e., don't try to shoot ducks, perdiz, fish, and doves on a five day trip. Seriously consider renting their shotguns while you are there as it eliminates a lot of hoops to jump through, particularly at the B.A. airports (there are two). Make certain you have enough english speaking guides to go around. That is very important and the good outfits take care of this. And schedule an extra two days to visit B.A. Pay for an english speaking guide to show you around as it's a great city. Stay in a hotel close to that unique cemetary they have and you will be impressed. For that matter, schedule at least a half day for a tour of that cemetary as it's worthwhile to visit. Make a point of seeing a real Tango performed (your wife/women folk will really get off on it). Beats a titty bar/pole dance all to hell. Plus their wine, beer, and food is first rate. Nice people too!

Here are some photos I took this week in Cordoba. This is the Golden-eared dove of South America...found in millions in the Cordoba Province. It is very similar in size and plumage to our Mourning Dove. Bird boy loads your gun for you and hands it over. He keeps track of the birds with a counter. At the end of the day you will know exactly how many shells you have shot and how many birds you bagged. You can shoot as many shells in a day as you like. You can burn 100 shells in a day or 6,000 shells in a day. Choice is yours. Action is non-stop. Here you can see a perfect hit. Flocks upon flocks of birds. During lunch break and at end of the day all empty hulls and downed birds are picked up by the bird boys. All fields are left in pristine condition after every hunt. That is a picture from this Monday afternoon. Total for the entire hunt was 10,000 doves. Lodge staff waiting for you with cold drinks as you head back to the lodge. Did I mention the hunting areas are only 5 to 10 minutes away An appetizer tray with dove breasts and other goodies. Fantastic wines from Mendoza region of Argentina. They go great with steaks. Happy memories !!! Steak, steak, steak....chef will keep serving you until you say you have had enough. Meal prepared by our chef. A well balanced meal This dessert usually wins This is just a portion of pics that I took. Please check out the Bird Shooting Forum here at AR to see more pics which I will be posting soon. Please feel free to contact me any time here on AR via PM or send me an email or call me. I will be happy to answer any and all questions.

I'd kill to be eating a lomo at Garcia's in Carrasco...........great meat. xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere. NEVER, EVER book a hunt with BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING or JEFF BLAIR. Well, it's up to you to be there again.. Today it's a nice and warm summer night here at Montevideo and "Nuevo García" (they change the name ) has desks outside, side by side with the street. So imagine being there right now with a cold beer and a "baby beef" (the house speciality) infront of you... . L

Lorenzo: I want to be sure I'm talking about the right restaurant, Nuevo Garcia's is the one a few blocks from the Hotel Casino Carrasco, that has sort of a greenhouse look, lots of small windows with white paint on the trim? Not to mention the fried pequereys (sp?) in the Mercado Central......to die for.......yummy..... xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. Yes we are talking about the same restaurant. About the fried pejerreyes...Richard Powell (Scruffy) during his last trip to Uruguay he ate some of them in a small reaturant side by side with the ocean and he also find them VERY tasty.. L

If you like to shoot birds and have a good time, there's no place better. I've had some great dove hunts over the last 37 years, but nothing like Argentina. My 2 buddies and I killed over 5000 birds in 3 days w/o trying very hard and alot of grape juice too. We went in June--their winter-and the weather was perfect. Also affordable for a great time in another part of the world. I will go back.
