I know from experience that there is nothing as painful or confusing as the suicide of a loved one. Nobody knows or understands what goes on inside one's head that causes him to take such action. One thing you need to understand is that the friend you know and loved was not the same person when that decison was made. Something was going on inside him that destroyed his ability to think rationally. As survivors who have lost a loved one, we try to use our rational thinking to understand how our friend could have left his friends and family in such a way. Your dear friend was taken from you, not by the friend you knew, but by something outside of his control.

You and his family will go through tremendous pain for a long time and you should not expect the pain to ever go away completely. I can tell you from my own experience that as time passes, the good thoughts about your lost friend will begin to displace the feelings of tremendous pain and cofusion you are feeling right now.

My own loss was also that of a great hunter, my mentor and hero - my father. He also took his life with a firearm. It has a couple years, and I still struggle with the "why" and "how." Over time, the pain has subsided, but it will never go away. I have learned from it much about the importance of my family, friends and life. Every time I hunt, prepare to hunt, or even think about hunting, I thank him for teaching me about it.

I do not know you, Juan, but I feel for you and the friends and family of your lost friend. You will all get through this if you stick together and help one another in any way you can. Keep hunting and enjoying your family and friends.
