wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

I really thought hard about a Factory Five, especially after making the trip to see one of their guys' with the 540 horse package like the GT 40's had. Eventually, all those creature comforts and a dealership close by tipped the scales in favor of the XK-8 convertible you see here. Six-two and two-twenty-five made the deal, along with the AT.

It looked pretty tight Rich. I'm 5-11 and 170, about right for me or someone smaller.

Hmmm. I used to fly with the(Not Politically Correct) Confederate Air Force. The P-51 was my love. Now you get your German acft and I'll get...oops another pilot put it into the dirt. DRT applies to him now.
For a car, I've only got my old BMW 318i convertible.

Well Max, down low your late model P51 would be in deep sheeeet against a late model FW190 and then there's the battle damage problem for the Mustang. It doesn't do so well with that fragile liquid cooled car engine, that is if it doesn't blow iyself up on the take-off roll. Then of course there's the whole "Butcher Bird" thing. Better do a comparison of guns before you strap in. OH! Forgot about the flight controls too ... the Mustang looks like an excavator in the cockpit with all those silly levers. Then there was the D9 etc ... but I don't wanna embarrass you further.

Although of Germany ancestry, I'll stick with who won the war. Now, given the chance to fly a 262...

It's about the hardware not the war. Did I mention the FW190 has all electric flight controls? No cables & levers & pulleys to get shot up. Then there was the Ta152 variant. 50+ MPH faster than the P51 with a service ceiling 8,000 feet higher. Course since you like the Me262, maybe we should explain what happens when a P51 or Yak or whatever encounters one of those?

Good to have you back Max!

It said "Brockman" on the cowling so not sure if it was Superformance with a Brockman label on it or a Brockman one off. There were some other Superformance cars in the lot at the time. IIRC, Brockman was the original designer of the type in the early 60's. Definitely not my area of expertise, maybe someone else will chime in and help us out. I can tell you that the execution - fit & finish were excellent.

Best Daytona reference is the book Daytona Cobra Coupes by Brock, Friedman and Stauffer. The original designer was Peter Brock now located at http://www.bre2.net/index.php?section=1

Peter did an updated version of the coupe in conjunction with the original suspension designer. The idea was to build the coupe that Peter wanted to build in the first place. Superformance from Africa was the builder. Once the product was a success, Shelby took one and all to court. The final settlement was that a somewhat cosmetically changed coupe is now only available through Shelby. Michael S of F1 fame owns the only type 65 Super Coupe. Peter who was at GM and had a hand in the Sting Ray, owns a Superformance coupe with a 427 CI Corvette motor (LS7)!!
The coupe is in fiberglass, although the originals were all aluminium. Shelby will sell you an AL bodied version.
As for the Butcher Bird, seems to me that the D version carried a liquid cooled engine as did the Ta 152. In fact the D version carried a bomber engine! Tank considered it an interm until he could get the TA series into production. Cool

Tank originally intended to install the DB605 but was circumvented by short supply, changed the design to accomodate the 801 and then installed the Jumo 213. Later versions of the 213 were superior to the DB605 anyway. The Ta152 was a natural evolution of the D9 with the goal of better performance at higher altitude. The Do335 was another interesting solution. Didn't matter with turbine power already in the air - game over for the Luftwaffe and piston power.

Dietmar Harmann's book Focke-Wulf Ta 152 has an interesting, very short, history of the development of the Fw 190 into the Ta 152. There were several proposed variations including the Zerstorter, fighter-bomber and high-altitude fighter, even a reconnaissance aircraft. As for the jets, that a whole different story.

There's a restored Do 335 at Dullas. A true beauty.

By the by, I've just recently retired from Arnold Engineering Development Center at Tullahoma, TN. We still have one of the WWII German wind tunnels, although it's no longer in service. You ever get in this area, it's worth a tour. The site was the result of the determination of Gnl Arnold to never play second place in technology in the air. In short, he didn't want to send P-51s against Me 262s. Construction started in 1951 and we've been going strong ever sence then.

A few years ago my brother and I went to the Shelby American Collection's Christmas party.
They had a couple original Daytona Coupes there - one fresh from restoration. A few of the original drivers and team members were there including Dan Gurney, Dan Gerber, Bob Bondurant, Phil Hill and of course Carroll Shelby.
Everyone was very accomodating in such a relaxed atmosphere, signing autographs, taking photos and such.
Most memorable was an incident when Gurney was signing a poster using the rear of a Daytona as a desk. The paint pen stuck open and spilled paint on the rear fender!
Gurney's response was, "we did a lot worse to these cars when they were new!"
I don't think all there saw the humor in it though...

Abarths were some of the most innovative cars of all time!
The hemispherical combustion chamber is a Carlo Abarth innovation as well as the first belt driven camshafts.
Abarth had an uncanny ability to trounce many of the bigger cars in endurance racing.
I think Abarth had a hand in Lancia's rally and endurance racing programs in the 80's.
Think about it, the Lancia LC2 could do 246mph down the mulsanne! And that is with a 3 liter engine! No bullshit 8 liter Veyron pig car crap!
