Auto trans here. About 20mpg if I keep it around 60mph.

Doesn't burn oil, but leaks a quart every 2k miles or so. 299,359 as of today. That big event is just around the corner. Hope it doesn't do a "Blues Brothers" on me.

Yeah, mine leaks a little oil too, not much though or enough to worry about. I cruise at about 65mph on the highway. Those engines are low reving and aren't for high speed.
I have the same engine in a 95 Jeep YJ Wrangler with 5 speed. I don't know what the axle ratio is but this Jeep operates at very low rpm, usually between 1200-1800. Someone told me it may have a 277 rear end, has trouble climbing hills at highway speeds, sometimes have to downshift.

That was last week. It probably increased to around 1.65 this week. That's what we pay here anyway.

Whatever you get you need good traction control. There is a good video about this on youtube. When a rear wheel slips it needs to have the other compensate in some way as to allow the vehicule to maintain a straight course. There are alot of tricks to this that I cannot recall but I believe there are some manufacturers that got it right-I think Jaguar and maybe Ford but I am sure there are others.I say this because a vehicule that does not have the proper weight distribution and traction control is a big downer no matter how good the engine is etc.. It could even get you killed.

Shakari, I too own a Wagoneer! I live up in the woods of Astoria currently though. Is yours a 70's waggy? They are great outdoors especially with a good lift and some mods, and yes they are terrible on gas. Mine has a mild cam, Edelbrock performer intake, Holley carb, deletion of various vacuum assist & emissions items, DUI distributor and a better exhaust. Aiming at headers and redoing the interior soon. I'm lucky on a good day to get more than 18mpg. Still, it's better than the Suburban I own. It's an '88 with a 454, selectable 4w drive.
My good friend has an old 4runner that he rebuilt the engine and transmission on, and it's wonderfully stout and capable. If I could find one around I'd jump on it in a heartbeat. Than again, I own over 11 vehicles...I may have to part with one if I go buy another one.

Great to hear of another Waqggy owner and please do post some pics up!

Mine is a 1980 and was designated the Cherokee Laredo model (I think) for the South African export market but exactly the same as the Wagoneer but with the two tone Laredo seats.

Mine has Edelbrock carb & Headman Hedders etc. tu2

I reckon I probably get a bit better than 18 mpg but of course, the car is always running on tickover on these Portuguese roads. rotflmo

I'm just now in the market for a small 4x4 and am rather tempted to get a modern Jeep Laredo SWB diesel soft top but time will tell....... I'm also going to RSA later this year and hope to buy one or two classic cars to ship over here if I can find what I want.

Do tell what your other 11 are! tu2

Will post up pics soon! Give me a few days as she looks like medusa right now. I will say that yours looks a million times better than mine! Mine's been on the Oregon coast it's whole life, so there's some rust, peeling paint and the interior is a mess from someone trying to make it into a mud bogger. I figured I'd do the performance stuff first than worry about the cosmetics later on.
What kind of classic cars are you looking for? Are you a hot rodder or enjoy the lines and style of an old classic?
A diesel jeep would be fantastic. That being said I've never been to Portugal, as much as I hope to one of these days. I've been hearing great things about the new Grand Cherokee however they are plenty unpleasant on gas. I still can't imagine how living with fuel prices is over there!
My car list, in no particular order
-'83 Wagoneer limited, as listed above
-'88 Suburban, swapped in CMPP 454 with TBI, Flowmaster dual exhaust and a wiring nightmare.
-'84 Dodge Ramcharger - 360 w/ mild cam, full length headers and glass packs.
-'10 Dodge Dakota Sport - CAI and Borla exhaust, some interior beautification and sound system. It's my wife's baby.
-'06 Pontiac GTO - In storage, too edgy and maniac to drive around here
-'03 Nissan 350z - In storage and torn apart to do some turbocharging.
-'02 Pontiac WS2 Trans Am - At the paint shop as of yesterday. LS1 with LS6 swapped in parts, straight pipe exhaust
-'05 Nissan Maxima - Just a CAI and a better sound system. This is our family car for long trips.
-'71 Camaro RS - In storage, doing an engine swap.
-'69 Camaro X44 - In storage, trying to figure out why she is eating up cams / pushrods for breakfast.
-'47 Hudson - Currently in the care of my father-in-law. It's a show car that's been triple blacked, chopped and tubbed, has an LS3 from CMPP and a Dakota digital dash. I didn't want to expose it to the elements here so she's down in California for a little while.

I'm currently in negotiations to possibly trade the Hudson with an old friend of mine, he's got a '55 Chevy 210 that I'd like to do a modernization off of. It's all well maintained but taken apart for many years.

Let's get a car list from you too!

Wow but you've got some great vehicles! tu2

I enjoy all old cars & bikes but I'm not a hotrodder and tend to like fairly standard vehicles or ones that have been modified with a degree of subtlety.

I'm hoping to get to RSA towards the end of this year & while there will be looking for/at a mid 60s Merc SL & a stepside pick up from about the 50s...... I think I've got the Merc pretty much lined up with a friend over there but the stepside might be harder to find.
