I don't know of availability, but I own a 1993 Suzuki Sidekick JX 4 X 4 that has been as dependable as a broom, if you know what I mean. The engine is absolutely bullet proof, the electric hubs have never missed a beat, and the engine drinks like a hummingbird... I put a 2" body lift on it and added 30 X 9.5 Maxxis Buckshot Mudder tires. So help me, the little 4 DR could climb trees if it could get a grip!

M37 was made by Dodge for Uncle Sam. Supposedly a 3/4ton truck. There is nothing 3/4ton about them. They are more like 1-1/4ton. Supprisingly good ride too. 4 speed synchronized tranny, 34" non-directional tires. Go no where fast, but get there in one piece. Excellent candidate for a BT4(4cylinder Cummins diesel).

doubless, is the Suzuki not similar to the Geo Tracker? I am currently looking for a Toyota 4 Runner as the prices of older ones are similar or less than the Jeep Wrangler, and it seems to be a pretty bullet proof vehicle. Geo Trackers are not that common.

Its a good thing they don't go too fast because they stop even slower, lol. I think the pads on the old drum brakes can't be wider than an inch or so. So if you have the time and money to go to a BT4 a disc brake conversion kit is a good idea too. I drove an M31 for a summer. The tranny may have a synco but the gears were straight-cut and whined like a supercharger.

Mercedes Unimog 404 cheap ($4000-$5000) 6 speeds forward 2 reverse. Six banger Mercedes engine no smog crap. Four wheel drive and four wheel drive locked on the fly. Portal axels for the best ground clearance. Parts are super available. I have three of them. IMHO beats Land Rover, Heeps (sorry Jeeps), Land Cruisers, etc and I have owned them all. Strictly off road vehicle with top speed of about 50mph.

Hi Peter,

Gonna give you a good tip here. 1998-2006 Jeep Cherokee with in-line 6 engine. Cheap and very good little vehicles. I have seen several of those engines run over 200k miles.

Great little 4WD's too.

Hmmm, I was under the impression that Jeeps did NOT have a very good reputation (for reliability). I did look at Jeep Wranglers but they are "cool" and hence overpriced (at least in Florida).

Peter, The cherokee will work and will have more room than the Suzuki. Look for the sport model. Parts are cheap and easily found.

Any reliability differences between the 6 cylinder and V8 models? There seem to plenty of Jeep Grand Cherokees around!
Agree with the more room than the Suzuki and Geo Tracker comment! Also more than the Wrangler.
Peter.

Peter, i think the 8 and 6 are the same in terms of reliability. It is just a matter on how much you want to spend.

Thanks! As I said there are plenty of these on the local CraigsList, with prices all over the map. Got to sort through and figure out what is a fair price. Looking for a 2000 maybe.
Peter.

which section are you focusing on, Classic or Sports cars? Porsche does make a few AWD models...

Might be better answered in the 4x4 forum.

"Don't know where to post this so decided to try here. I have a vacation home "in the mountains". We need a vehicle to just leave up there and use when we are there. Roads are mainly dirt and hills are steep. Mama wants a UTV but they seem to be kinda expensive, so I thought a used 4WD that is "out of vogue" might be a good deal. Any ideas?
Peter."
This was my original post.I don't think I need a Porsche! Lot's of good ideas here so I just have to find something suitable. Leaning towards a Jeep Cherokee due mainly to price.

Peter,
I promise you...get a 2006 or earlier with that little in-line 6...you won't be sorry.

As far as reliability of Jeeps...we used to have a fleet of those little Cherokees...you can't drive them hard enough to wear them out.

I've taken an interest in this thread. To which specific Cherokee model are you referring (in your fleet) since the XJ was killed off about 2001 to be succeeded by the Liberty. Don't know what the Liberty successor was if anything.

But I can use one of these things too.

thanks

Vermonts state car. My friend has one and like it. More of a car than a truck. Has low ground clearance and no low range when compared to a jeep.

I have ever owned. Lift kit, large tires,
locking differential, 164,000 miles, runs like a top.
