I believe the "Demon" is due to be unveiled and the New York Auto show as they did in the past with the first Challenger.

Different cars.

Dodge is dishing out details about its new Challenger SRT Demon muscle car in a series of a dozen videos leading up to its official reveal at the New York International Auto Show in April.

This week we’re told that the Demon will weigh more than 200 pounds less than its Challenger SRT Hellcat sibling, a 707 horsepower heavyweight that tips the scales just shy of 4,500 pounds.

Dodge says weight was cut from the wheels, brakes, suspension, steering and interior components. An X-ray rendering of the car in the video highlights all of these areas, plus some sections of the chassis, suggesting a switch to lightweight high strength steel or aluminum parts.

It also reveals what appear to be exceptionally wide wheels, backing up rumors that the Demon will feature a widebody style -- rumors that appear to have been confirmed this week by spy photos purported to be of the Demon that were posted by Instagram user @illegal_machine.

Along with massively flared front fenders, the car in the photos features an air intake that covers at least half of the width of the hood, double the size of the Hellcat’s. Also noticeable are light-colored, almost white brake discs. That could mean they’re carbon ceramics, which would explain some of the weight loss.

More intriguingly, there’s a button on its center stack marked “Racing Fuel” that suggests there’s a built-in mode that optimizes the car to run on very high octane fuel, a unique feature for a mass produced production car, but one that might explain how Dodge is increasing the horsepower of the 707 Hellcat V8 in the Demon.

The unleashing of this is pretty epic. If you read about the tech to launch it off the line, it's unlike anything I'm currently aware of. Certainly, the purists will cry foul that it's an appliance for speed and there's no challenge, but it's consistent! Anyone can run a 9.53 quarter mile!

I believe the button on the dash is the one that switches the freon from the cabin evaporator to the power chiller incorporated into the water to air intercooler to chill the coolant in that closed system. In other words you can can have air conditioning and 707 hp but not at the same time.

I'd have to ask my buddy. He is an engineer on the Demon team.

But he knows well that I am a Stuttgart Porsche head - but he did get me the cool factory Demon shirts.

I strongly suspect the prices on these to carry a big dealer availability charge. I wouldn't pay that even for a new 991 911R and the resale on it. They are 190K cars ( the 911R )and guys want 500 for them. Nah - keep em.

Clayman, the tech you refer to is a transbrake and they have been in use by racers for 20+ years, never in a factory car though. While the car certainly contributes a lot with all of its electronic devices like traction control, transbrake, etc. the idea that the average Joe can get in it and turn a mid 9 second quarter makes racers laugh! People tend to believe that drag racing is point and shoot and they could not be more wrong, there are so many variables to it that a computer cannot control. It still depends on the computer behind the wheel!

I dunno, it seems every ham-fisted automotive journalist who gets a chance to drive one gets down into the 9's or low 10's without much effort. I'm sure there's still a little bit of art left behind launching one, but this has to be the most technologically advanced factory drag car ever built.

No doubt that it is at the top of the heap technology-wise, it is an amazing car. As far as magazine writers..... well, some of them shoot 1/2" groups with Walmart guns and ammo! Interestingly enough, one auto magazine writer that can drive a hi-powered Mopar is a moderator on this board- he goes by the handle of Whitworth. As to launching, reading the track surface conditions, track preparation, track temp, ability to stay in the groove, humidity, barometric pressure, altitude all come into play and make all the difference. Most magazine writers lack the experience and don't have the seat time required to get the max out of a car like this, they simply don't have the time.

+1

One of the guys in our A12 liftoff hood club was lucky enough to get one on order and he paid sticker pricing without a dealer gouge added.

I just drove by Houston Raceway Park. They shut it down for the rest of the year to turn it into storage for all of the flood cars. There are thousands of cars there already and a long line of wreckers bringing more! It breaks your heart as most of them look fine on the outside. New and late model Benzs,BMRs,camaros, challengers, trucks, a mountain of them. I sure would like to buy a Hellcat or even a Challenger SRT as salvage, to tear down and turn into a race car, if they were cheap enough. Freshwater flood ruined the electrical but the body will be fine. Anyone know what salvage car pricing is based on?

No, But I have a buddy in San Antonio that buys Salvage cars. From what I gather, they are typically sold at auctions.
