I bought this about twelve years ago. It had 43,000 miles, all by a retired Dow exec who drove it only in nice weather and stored it during the winter, as I do. I have all documents from year one.

I have spent a lot of time upgrading, changing the interior to my taste and doing all necessary maintenance. I have not painted it.. I drive this car and a pristine new paint job would make me too paranoid re: stone chips, etc. I'd really like a color change... anything but "Look at me red", but see the above.

Maintenance costs have been low; I did a belt change (interference engine) about ten years ago and have another pending. Any other repair costs have totalled less than a thousand bucks over the twelve years.

I drive the car as much as Hagerty's allow. It goes to Ohio, Michigan's UP and to many rifle matches. There's room in back for my shooting equipment.

They made way too many of these to allow it to be attractive to investors/collectors. This makes it a real bargain for someone who wants a car to really drive.

Five years ago I also had a 911. I liked this much better and traded the 911. This car is comfortable, has lots of room and is a really fun car to drive.

Mine was an earlier one, remember the early eighties "Championship" model. White with the red and blue elongated tear drop stripe down the side.

It came to mind, I saw a like-new all black 944 Turbo yesterday for sale. $30K. Had about 20,000 miles on it and looked showroom new. If my XK-8 were not a convertible I would have talked to the man...

Thirty thousand seems pretty high for any 944, even a turbo. Maybe the price will eventually go up for good ones.

We've had a real good winter here. I was able to get it out of the garage and take off for a couple of hours Wed.

This was my 911. Photo taken in front of the small lake we have on our property. I liked this car a lot but there wasn't much room, the heater and A/C didn't work very well and repair costs were high. The 944 was both more comfortable and practical for my use. And it's plenty fast enough for an old phartte my age.

You may want to compare Grundy's to Haggerty insurance. Far less restrictions.

I'm lucky. With homeowners, the HD, the FJ Cruiser, my wife's diesel Jetta all with my Idaho Farm Bureau agent, the Jag is only about $750 a year with no mileage restrictions. Low deductibles to boot.

Our diesel Jetta (honest, we got one too) costs too much to insure... can't do much about it. The 944 costs about $350.00 a year and Hagerty's don't object if I drive it around 3000 miles.

I have had one claim with Hagerty's... one that I wouldn't dream of paying if I were in the insurance business. I called and asked and had a check in a week.

Glorya and I met McKeel Hagerty and Wayne Carini up at the Bay Harbor Concours de Excellence a couple of years ago. Nice men. Best show for the cars we are interested in in Northern MI.

We have the monthly payment, everything for less than $350 a month. Unlimited mileage on everything. Pays to live in Idaho in more than one way.

I've been so busy doing stockwork this spring that the Porsche has been pretty much neglected. I'm about to start putting finish on the first stock and will have some time to do a light service on this car... plugs air filter, etc.

There's a small sports car (only) show up at the small town of Alden on Torch Lake every August. We always show the Porsche so it will get a good detailing before then. That's the only show we display it in each year.

I was screwing off from the stock work that I should have been doing the other day and got a pleasant surprise... Hagerty's now show my car is worth $3500.00 more than I paid for it. This for a number two car which mine is.

This was confirmed later by a friend who is a car dealer and whose yellow book showed it as being worth the same as Hagerty's.

Since I posted the above I have had some expensive maintenance done (Ignition, wiring and a new radiator) but the car still has paid for itself and I've had twelve years of fun driving it.

Are you saying that your insurance only allows you to drive it 3,000 miles per year? 250 miles a month?

That's what I've been told and that's O.K. with me. We live in Michigan and the car is never driven in winter. (We have long winters.) I don't take it on long trips because it doesn't have a cruise control.

We have a "real" car for everyday and winter driving so the 3000 mile limit isn't bothersome.

If I ever had to take a long trip I would simple call Hagerty's and ask them.

I have the same deal on my Cobra, but I live in the UK so it's only possible to drive it the 15 days a year when it's not raining, hasn't just rained, isn'about to rain or might not rain.

No such restrictions on my sports cars. I couldn't restrict myself to such a scant mileage limitation by an insurance company. I'd look elsewhere. But that's just me as I drive my cars. Quite a bit!

I drive it more than you think, mostly on short (30 - 50 mile) trips in the local area. The lack of cruise control makes longer trips bothersome because of a circulation problem in my right leg.

It gets put away under cover from deer season till sometime in March due to snow and icy roads. If we have clean roads during the winter I'll take it out for a couple of hours every few weeks. This is Michigan and it all depends on what kind of winter we are having. I know that letting it just set is bad.

I've been surprised that no one has given me a hard time re: getting rid of the 911 and keeping the 944. The 911 was lovely to look at, it went like a raped ape and I got a lot of thumbs-up.

That said, the seats in the 944 are more comfortable, the heater and air conditioning work very well, there's a center console and a lot of room behind the seats for "stuff".

Glorya and I have, in the past, driven it to the UP several times for a weekend to shoot in benchrest matches and I could get all my shooting equipment in the car. No way in the 911...

The only significant expense is the belt change it needs every few years. This car gets all the routine maintenance and more but the bills are nothing like they would be were it a 911.

More good news from Hagerty's... The other day I was told by one of their people that they now show this (number two condition) car as being worth $16,000.00. I paid $7000.00 in 2003 so I've actually made a buck if I sell it.

This isn't exactly big time car collecting but I've never made money on a car before.

I took this a few years ago in a rest area near the Mackinac bridge. We were on our way home from a match with the Yoopers. The back is loaded with shooting equipment. This was before it got stripes.

Another difference between Hagerty and Grundy. Grundy is a "declared value" plan. You tell them what the car is worth, they don't tell you. The premium is based on your declared value.
